water weight
This is the first diet i've ever been on that i weighed myself daily. I drink plenty of water everyday and its the only beverage i've drunk in about 2 weeks. I feel great and i have more energy than every and i think water is the cause. I'm starting to feel a little concerned though because i don't know how much water weight you lose. I have lost 11 lbs in the last week and half and i average a pound lost daily.
My diet is not strict(healthy meals and portion control) and i only moderately exercise so i know its not fat i'm losing so quickly. How long will this keep up and is it safe to lose that much weight in so little amount of time? |
It's normal to lose a lot of weight at the beginning of a new diet, and you are right that it's mostly water. Most of us will lose around 2 pounds of fat per week, so the rest is probably water. Keep in mind that to lose one pound of fat, you have to burn 3,500 more calories than you consume. It will taper off soon and you'll probably notice a loss of between 1 and 3 pounds per week thereafter.
Congrats on making such a great start on your diet, it sounds like you've chosen a very reasonable plan that you can live with :) |
I wouldn't worry about what kind of weight it is that's coming off. Some is surely water weight. Some is definitely fat.
You may even be losing more fat than can be accounted for from calorie burn by exercise, because your water intake may have jump-started your metabolism. I'm a big believer in the concept of the setpoint. Maybe your metabolism is getting you back to your setpoint now that it has water in which to do its chemical reactions. If you're feeling good, it's fine. Likely the rate of weight loss will slow down, so enjoy it while it's happening. Just make sure you're getting all the nutrients you should have. If ever you feel depleted, then re-evaluate -- unless that happens, no need to worry! |
I was wondering about water weight as well. I jus started a diet about 5 days ago and today the scaled showed that I lost 2 pounds. I have been working out everyday except Sunday and eating about 1300 calories everyday.
