Help please with portion sizes?
Hi Ladies,
Have started today 01 Feb is the beginning of the new me :D I have been reading my book and I have a slight problem with the portion sizes - in America you use a cup as your guide - can someone please tell me how much water you can fit into the cup so as I can find a suitable cup to measure with......... I mean, I am sure its not espresso size cup :( - and hopefully its a large cappuccino cup :dizzy: Sorry to sound so dumb, but we only measure in gramms here in Italy. Thanks for all your warm welcomes ....... its great to be here. By the way anita, I am from Northern italy, near Torino - who are the hosts for the winter olympics in 10 days time........ exciting!!!!!! Thanks again Carrianna |
Ok when it comes to measuring liquids, a cup is equvilent to 8 ounces. BUT when it comes to portion size such as a serving size of milk for the JC plan, that is equivlent to 6 oz's. Make sure you check each invidiual portion size in the JC book or at the top of this forum food list. Hope that helps!

Thanks Laurie,
but what about a cup of pasta or a cup of asparagus for example, how big is the cup (or how much liquid can the cup hold so as I can gauge) Grazie |
OK when it comes to actually food portions, that is where the book REALLY comes in handy. Check at the top of this forum on the food list, it gives portion sizes. For example with rice the portion size is 1/4th cup so that is 1/4th of 8ounces since 8 ounces is 1 cup. Each food item has its own separate serving soze, you will have to look each food up in the book or on the food list until you memorize certain foods. Food and liquid are measured differently. Liquid is typically measured in ounces, so you can have 6 ounces of milk or I am sure you could make that equivlent to about 3/4th of a cup. I am sure Daisy or Lynn could problem explain this more since they are more avid cookers than I am!! LOL! ;)

Hi Carrianna
I'm in the Netherlands - we also use grams of course :) I found this for you: Approximate Metric Equivalents by Volume U.S. Metric -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1/4 cup 60 milliliters 1/2 cup 120 milliliters 1 cup 230 milliliters 1 1/4 cups 300 milliliters 1 1/2 cups 360 milliliters 2 cups 460 milliliters 2 1/2 cups 600 milliliters 3 cups 700 milliliters 4 cups (1 quart) .95 liter 1.06 quarts 1 liter 4 quarts (1 gallon) 3.8 liters and maybe this link is handy for conversion as well. Ciao! |
oops the link was removed: [url]Linkosuction. Info is available on THIS site!
then remove the spaces and there is conversion help for you :) Do you have a scale at home, to weigh your portions? |
Laurie - the problem is the the "8 oz" is something we don't use at all here. We measure in grams, milli/centi litres, etc. But the link and chart I provided should help :)
|
Thank you Renee!! That is awsome!! That is probably more of what she needs!!
|
You are welcome :) Much obliged :)

We have our own metric conversion chart here too! Check it out here: http://www.3fatchicks.com/food/metri...onversions.php

Brilliant! I did not know this! very handy :)

Also, think protien size of a deck of playing cards...carbs size of a rubics cube (or fist) fat..the cap of a bottle of water....and veggies,veggies,veggies...for those outside of America you have a slight advantage...Americans eat way too much processed food (me included! LOL)
Try to shop the perimeter of a grocery store and stay away from proceesed foods as much as possible (I should practice what i preach...I am the fan of the lean cuisine pannini!) Happy Eating!:hun: Maybe I will start posting in KG's...It makes me feel smaller! 196#=88.1kg;) Hmmmmmmm....I like the sound of that!:D :dancer: |
Hmmm - you are right, Allie! I am liking the kg thing!
|
It is true - we don't have half the amount of processed foods as you do in America. In fact, dare I say it, I think it's MUCH easier to diet here - though we don't have as many options for snack/convenience foods (there are certainly no Lean Cuisines!) so we HAVE to be clever and come up with healthy options for ourselves :)

OK, I am moving where she's from! LOL! Sounds like it will be easier for me to loose weight! LOL!
