Have a question....

I can't believe I am asking this question :o , but I know someone will have an answer. :)) Is there something I can eat to help with going to the bathroom. I haven't been in a couple of days. I used to do LA weight loss and they were always big on that. They said that people have pounds of that stuff in their body and we need to go everyday. I know it has to do with dieting. Help please!!

Lots of fruit and fiber!! Back when I was a teen, my youngest brother had trouble going, so the doctor told my mom to make him eat and apple with the peal every single day. It kept him regular. Look for stuff with lots of fiber and fruit too. You can also drink some prune juice. I personally don't like the taste but my 3yr has to take it and I mix 1/2 prune juice and 1/2 apple juice and she goes every day. It really helps.

Laxatives help. A longer term way that's safer and better is to add a fiber supplement like metamucil or a generic version of it. It is labeled a laxative but is better than some other stuff that's called laxatives and are really dehydration pills. I used to add metamucil and switched to a generic wal-mart brand and they work. I stopped using it cause I didn't really need it anymore. There also the alternative that can be more complicated at times or might not help cause u may already be doing it...eat foods with more fiber and or laxative effects. I would go simpler personally. If u are only in need of a temp fix then try those harder laxative pills. But be sure to drink water in case they dehydrate u eventually.

What are some examples of high fiber foods?

Raisin bran always works for me.

My husband is on narcotics for pain with his legs and has had a lot of "issues" with constipation. We have found that diet works best over the long run to control it. He eats fresh fruit for breakfast every day and has a salad either with lunch or dinner every day. Peanuts, raisins, sunflower seeds (or a mixture of all three) also works well. I personally take Metamucil caplets every so often to "clean things out". Bananas have the opposite effect, so be careful what fruit you choose. I know applesauce is recommend for babies to combat diarreah, so I am not sure what apples do????

Mel, when I was going through chemotherapy - major bowel problems. Eating salads, apples, Kashi Cereal (major high fiber) but be sure to drink tons of water. Hope this helps!!

It isn't so much the apple as it is the peel. Baked potato skin also has fiber. Whole grain foods will usually have a good amount of fiber. What you might want to do is add a fiber count to your food log, I have one on my body journal log that I keep in my notebook. I try to consume on average b/t 25 and 35 grams of fiber daily. You can also get lots from beans some have more than others. You can add them to all kinds of salads, ie: green salad pasta salad. Fish oil and caster oil can also help. Your best bet tho is eating a percentage of high fiber foods, drinking lots of water and doing some form of exercise daily. Your body will eventually adjust to your new life style and you will be regular as clock work. Please also remember that not everyone goes every day, that is also "normal"2x a day 1x a day every other day all "normal". Your body will let you know once you start it on the right path.No Question too embarrassing, ever!

I forgot warm milk might also work. Milk works different for some people it can help for some it may make it worse. If you fall into the later try drinking something warm, anything warm apple juice warm prune juice hot cup of coffee, not decaf, the caffiene helps but not the best method.

Thanks for all the great tips. I think I should be able to get this under control now.
Thanks again to all!

I don't go every day and my doctor said when you are on a weight loss program, you may not. Your body may be using the food and there just isn't enough left over to eliminate. As long as you aren't having stomach cramps or feeling uncomfortable, my doctor says not to worry about it.

Please remember that fiber and water are partners. If you increase your fiber, you should increase your water...

Mel - Prune juice is excellent - or prunes. Either one. If you get very desperate - if you begin to be uncomfortable - try senna tea. Celestial Seasonings (my personal favorite - although I know loose tea is much more in vogue) makes a nice gentle blend: Good night Cleanse Wellness Tea.

Good luck...
