Question...

  • Can anyone help me out on this....my DH is an avid outdoorsman and being from S.W PA we eat quite a bit of venison(my kids prefer it in fact)and we make our own Jerky and slim-jim type thingies. The venison is VERY lean (my DH hand trims it himself) and we season it with some soy or teryaki and lots of garlic & spices.I LOVE this stuff...what I am wondering is how many calories do you figure it is?Is there anyway to find out?It really makes a great snack....all protien.....lean meat....I really really would like to know the caloric value.

  • According to Fitday, 4 oz. of venison (cooked) has 193 calories, 4 g. fat and 37 grams of protein. Perhaps you can figure it out from that. Fitday gives values for jerky but it probably has sugar in it.

  • Ruth...THANK-YOU THANK-YOU THANK-YOU!
  • Becca~ I did a venison roast in the oven last week, it was SO good! A package of onion soup mix, carrots and tators, cover it with tin foil and bake it low for a few hours. Yum! And so easy!
  • Becca - just be careful with sodium. You will probably need to balance a jerky snack with some extra water...
  • Thanks to everyone for helping me out on this one!
Donna....mmmm roast sounds yummy!DH and I made a BBQ roast sorta like pulled pork(?if you know what I mean?) and the kids just go wild for it,have even made it for parties and such, just throw it in the ol' crockpot kinda deal!Anyway, its nice to know that we aren't the only family out there that enjoys wildgame.Sometimes when I will talk to people and mention venison,or rabbit or wild turkey people act like I feed my family out of garbage cans or that we're savages run amuck! But usually they are younger people, and people who didn't come from outdoorsy backgrounds. My closest friend is originally from Southern California and she was apalled when she first heard my kids asking if we were having venison for dinner....now her son is addicted to our deer jerky and shes happy to have him eating that instead of chips or candy, she still doesn't care for venison she says, although she doesn't fuss about it like she did at first, considering that the Dr. she works for is also an avid outdoorsman and has told her that his family eats venison also.Ok...there I go again running off at the keyboard,my Mom has said she thinks I just like to hear the sounds of my own "keyboard" as much as my voice
    hmmm...maybe she's right?!
  • Sounds YUMMY!
  • Becca,

My DH loves to hunt. He also fixes jerky with deer meat and it is delicious. Does you husband eat, sleep, and breath hunting? Mine does it so much that sometimes I get jealous. I guess it could be worse. He could be doing god knows what.
  • LOL! MelissaThe guys only hear one thing during hunting season - the sound of deer peeing! Dan gets the "fever" so bad he can hardly get job bids out because he knows there is a deer lurking out there close by My mom always loved when dad went to Idaho for 2 weeks every year because she said if he was home she wouldn't get anything out of him anyway! And they wonder about us!
