*newbie* not sure how to start..

hi people..
i just got home from my second year living at college to find that the freshman 15 is definently not a myth :( so i've resolved to do the whole diet& exercise thing this summer. my goal is to lose 18 pounds by the time i move into my new apartment next year, so i have 12 weeks.

and so sets in the second-guessing, and the researching online, and the joining of the forum. is 1.5lb/week a realistic goal? i'm hoping to do this with diet and walking. i grew up (and am back home in) a pretty healthy, strict ovo-lacto vegetarian household, so i'm wondering if people have advice for diet changes i should make besides portion control and all the stuff i should've been doing anyway. (my parents are also busy dieting& walking, mom to lose weight and dad to ward off type2 diabeties.)

so yeah.. looking for any advice, and here's hoping i can make this work! :^:

FIT DAY IS GREAT! Also It track calorie, fat and fiber daily in a notebook. I also log my exercise ( which I've been lacking lately)!
My daughter is home from college just ending her second year and gained about 20 pounds. She bought online the tapes "turbo jams" and she loves it, shes also walking, and eating portion controlled.. college is great for weight gain.. lets not mention all those jello shots (wink wink).. good luck and keep posting!

thanks for responding so quick! i checked out FitDay, it looks pretty awesome. one other question- do you find it better/more encouraging to weigh yourself every day (for immediate results), or every couple days (for pleasant surprises)?
