Any 40 somethings.....
I turn 40 this month, my 18 year old daughter has gone off to college and my 20 year old son moved out almost 2 years ago so I am having major empty nest syndrome. My weight is fluctuating between 210 and 215 and I am ready to do something. I would like to get down to 140-150--it would be awesome to get lower to 130-135 but I am trying to be realistic. I know it won't happen tomorrow but I wish it would. I just joined a Slim-N-Tone in my area and I actually like it. In the past my husband has been very supportive in my trying to lose weight, but when the results start he kicks into the insecurity mode and sabotages my efforts to the point I quit trying and end up gaining even more. It's such a vicious cycle. I tried Weight Watchers in the past and was frustrated because even though I weighed and measured everything and kept to my allotted points I didn't lose, but I didn't' exercise either.

Welcome to 3FC
I am 38, but my children are much younger. I have been having a mini-version of empty nest syndrome because my youngest started school this year.
I know you will enjoy the boards here - there are a lot of great, supportive people! :) |
I am 40. I'm doing Weight Watcher's and am successful with the program when I stick to it. I started WW after I ate the whole spiral ham in 2-3 days around Thanksgiving 4 years ago. I knew this was going on long enough. I weighed 215 lbs. I don't excercise other than my work but, it is pretty physical. I'm divorced as of 2 and a half years ago, have no children and live alone. Well, I do have cats. They are my family and I have only one friend. Home alone with the fridge is very hard for me. Especially, on my nights off. I got down to 152 lbs. and went through some stressful times and gained all but 15 lbs. in 15 months. I've now lost over 40 lbs. once again. I've never hit goal or lifetime member yet but, I'M DETERMINED!
These boards are great...enjoy! :) |
Thanks for the encouragement.
icmethinner: I was a stay at home mom until both of my kids started school and when they do it is truly a mini version of the empty nest syndrome. rocksann: I traded my alcohol addiction for a food addiction after I had kids, when l am down or stressed, the first thing I turn to is food. I am a grazer, not really hungry so I don't sit down and actually eat something good, but then I pick and nibble on everything the rest of the night. Congratulations to both of you one your weight loss! |
Hey Jules,
I am 43, married, work fulltime with 5 children (13 1/2, 11 1/2, 10, 6 and 2 1/2--my youngest is my daughter). I weight about 190 and cannot seem to lose any weight. I have runners knee which I developed from weight lifting about a year ago. I hope to have the problem fixed so I can speed up my weight loss with some serious exercise. |
Hi momof5,
I have a problem with my knee to. Husband I had a motorcycle accident and I did a number on both of my kness. At the beginning of six months of pt both kneecaps sat higher but the left one is okay now. The right one is still high and can give me grief. I am thinking about going to PT again. Being out of commision helped pack on the pounds. Hills and stairs do me in. I did find that an elliptical is my friend. |
Hi. Jules I am 42, and have 2 young boys.I have gained alot of weigh in the past year due to a move and other things.I just have joined this weight journey just before tanksgiving. I have been a ww member on and off for years. I did not join this time. I decided to do it on my own. I find the support I need here. You will do fine here. stick with it.

:) Hi Jules!
I am new to the board and will offer whatever I can. I am 42, have a great husband and 8 children. I suffer from "wouldrathersitonmybutt" disease and the hubby is unable to help motivate me due to a degenerative knee problem. I think he also suffers from "weight loss" anxiety as his insecurities come to the surface when people start to notice a difference in me. I also have a very sendentary job as an Office Manager for a Land Development and Investment Company. I eat healthy but never resist the sweets. AND, I don't exercise. Certainly can't lose the weight if I don't. So, I've come to this board to get the help I truly need. I guess we are all in this together!:) :carrot: |
Hi djmommy, I have found that the people on this site are very supportive. I tried WW and though it works for alot of people, I got frustrated after counting the points and weighing and measuring and not seeing the huge results I was expecting. Looking back, I did not add in exercise and I did lose eight lbs in the 10 week period. After watching Biggest Loser it seemed that some of the women were only experiencing small weekly amounts. I htink I was just being unrealistic.
Hi lostnomad, welcome. The more posts I read I see there are many of us in the same boat. The candy jars at my office are hard to resist and there are many people that put them out. My problem is once I start I rarely stop at one little piece. I did try something different which seemed to work-get some slim fast chocolate type bars and cut them up and instead of eating the whole bar in one setting, just eat a half during your morning break and the other during the afternoon one on the days that you are really craving chocolate. I don't know if it's a good thing but it helped me resist. Also only taking in daily what I am going to be eating that day. If I take a box of anything, even slimfast bars in I will eat more than I should. Good luck to both of you! |
Hi Jules, I'm 43 with two teenagers ... daughter 13 1/2, son 17 next month. I've been on and off diets for years ... mostly since having my son ... 17 years of baby fat is a little exceptional don't you think?!:o I've been lurking on this site for ... errrr .... a few years now:o But things have finally come to a head this week ... I simply can't go on the way I am. I've taken action and have just started over again ... not a great time to start a new plan with the run up to Christmas/New Year, and my folks visiting from the UK next week for a whole month!! ... But there never really is a right time is there? There's always some function or event happening ... parties, weddings, holidays, etc. I've decided that there's no time like the present, so I'll give it my best shot, make sensible choices over the holidays, and continue into the New Year. I WILL reach my goal in 2006!!
Good luck to you and everyone else ... we can all do it!!:goodluck: Nichola |
Well Ladies I just got in an awesome workout.I am not seeing anything happening on the scales, but I am for sure getting in exercise. More that be for anyway. I still can not get my ww pts in tact. I always go over a few. Oh well I have cut back anyway. I just hid my hubbys peanut jar. I was hitting that alot. I put it in the laundry room cupboard... how is that for out of sight out of mind. hehehe I know he will not mind he supports me so much. Sometimes I wonder if he does because he is disgusted with me. I know that is harsh to say, But I wonder? I guess if he did not I would be mad too. anyway have a great day ladies we can do this.

Hello everyone,
It is nice and cold here in Texas...current temperature is 34 and we are only supposed to get to 40. I know that doesn't sound really cold to some people but to us Texans, it is darn near freezing. I am finishing my first cup of coffee :coffee2: and on my way to my second one. Wish I had some egg nog or hot cider.....diet version of course. Have a great day |
Hi ladies it has been a while since I posted on this how are you all doing. I am doing al right considering the holiday and all. I can not wait until there is no more cookies around. Try to stay focused and drink drink the water

Hi all,
I trust that everyone is doing well. I haven't lost a pound and am getting pretty discouraged. Need a pick me up !!! |
Hey 40 something ladies,
Where is everyone? I hope all of you are doing well. Does anyone have any strategy planned for Christmas dinner? |
Hey ladies,Hi mom of 5 You are right were is everyone.... Do not get discouraged you can do this.....I have not thought about thatchristmas strategy yet. I know i need to we celebrate on Sat. with my hubbys family. It will be hard cuz we go in to stay and I have no control over the menu for 2 days.. I guess I better make a plan
|
Still maintaining but not losing...went out for my birthday dinner last night at at the families favorite Mexican place. Probably ate more chips & salsa & cheese dip than I should have. Had a great time though. I realized that I do miss my kids being home more than the actual age thing.
djmommy--I agree I can't wait until after Christmas and no more celebrating with food involved....good for your exercising--I have been going to the Slim-n-tone gym at least two nights a week...the weather has not been cooperating... mom of 5--no strategy here--just trying to be realy careful in between the scheduled parties! I do think I am going with the Nutri-System to get portion control under control in January. I'll wait and see how I do on it before I decide to do it for one, two or even three months.....have prepared hubby that I will still make some of his food but I have to do this for me...at this point he is still being supportive... Nichola-welcome--I am trying very hard to just maintain and not gain over the holidays--haven't been doing this long enough to have a firm plan in place--as for the baby fat..I am bigger now than I was when I was pregnant with my second child--scary huh! Hong Kong sounds exciting--they say the healthy eating of oriental countries is better for you. What have you found? |
Hello!
I am 41, married and have 5 kids and 1 grandson. I know all about the sabatoging. Not only does my husband do this, other family members as well. My kids are good about it though. They ALWAYS ask me if I want "some." They are my biggest support system! Stay strong and remember we are here for each other! emerald dragonfly |
Hi Everyone,
No special strategy for me either, just trying to cope the best I can throughout the holiday season. Having my parents here for the holidays doesn't help either as we're eating out far more than we normally would. Trying not to go too much overboard ... as long as I can maintain until the festive season is over I'll be very happy, then I'll get down to a serious routine and shift this blubber once and for all!!
