Hi All
Well, once again I am going to lose weight- but this time I am going to do it with your help.
I just turned 50 and instead of feeling old, I want a new start. Married, no kids, but do have a Cairn Terrier that I love dearly. (Well not as much as my husband!) I live in upstate NY. I will really appreciate any help and encouragement that we can share. Looking forward to talking with you all! |
Hi
Hi, Good to see another person posting that's near my age. We do have special problems, our metabolism just isn't what it used to be! But that doesn't mean we can't loose the weight and be "Nifty Fifty". What is your plan? Diet and exercise?
I walk 30-40 min a day and lift weights 3xweek. I do ride my bike occasionally to mix it up some. I jsut got my bike out recentaly and rediscovered I had thighs!!! So I guess changing exercises occasionally is a good thing. |
Hello
I'm also new to this site and looking for some others in their 40's or 50's. I've battled my weight since high school, won some, lost some, and am currently losing that battle. Hopefully the group support will make a difference. It would be great to join you as it just seems so much harder at this age. Welcome to both of you!
|
I know we can do it. I'm glad to have the support, i'm going to need it! I think everything is easier with a little help from your friends, don't you?
|
Hi all
I'm new to this forum, but definately not new to losing weight. I've decided to start back on track, once again, and try to really do something positive this time. I am 43, married to a wonderful man that keeps me grounded, thank goodness and the mother of two beautiful girls and one handsome son. Being from the South, as our gracious hostesses are, definately makes it hard to keep the weight off, especially since I LOVE to cook (and eat!) I have realized though that I need a support group to help me through the tough times. Hopefully I can make some good friends here and get down to my goal weight. I realize I will never be that slim size 7 I once was many, many, many moons ago, but I do want to get down to at least a size 10. I'm five foot tall and the last time I weighed I was back up to 200 pounds. Size 18 or 20 pants and 22/24 Top. I have started out today by cutting out sugar and sweets in my diet and following a low fat, low carb plan. Any suggestions as to which plan is best ? I love fruits and veggies and can do without alot of meat, but I haven't kept up with diet plans over the past couple of years. Thanks for listening to me ramble..and lets get acquainted ! Shell

I am in the same boat. Again, I am ready to start. I have tried all summer to get some weight off. I went up and down 5 lbs., currently back up. Ug. It would be great to have some buddies for help and encouragement.
I'm from Ohio, married to the same man for almost 27 years!, 2 adult children. My "baby" turns 21 next month, so I guess tecnically they aren't children anymore. I have 2 sweet pups who will always be my babies. We can do this together! Jen |
Hi Jen, Nice to meet you ! I'll be here for you if you need encouragement. It always helps me to have someone to talk to. I just started back on plan today, so we can do this together. Good Luck !
|
I hope everyone had a beautiful day today! Today was about as perfect a day as ever here. Still more on my "To Do" list, but I thought that for the afternoon, I would just enjoy the outdoors while it lasted.
I did the yard work this morning, which went into afternoon, so I consider that exercise. I got in my 64 oz. of water already too. My food choices were pretty good, but I need to work on my portions a little better. Today was successful for me. Here's hoping yours is/was too. Looking forward to hearing from you! |
I am soon to be 50
I was wondering if there were people my age around.
I am flying to Reno, to celebrate my 50 birthday with my twin on Sept 5-6. I am giving her a birthday cake and we both will spend the day at the spa. I've been married for every and have 3 grown children and 3 grandanimals I want to get rid of my extra weight so that the next half of my life is a heathier one. I have been trying to either walk or swim every day, even if the walk is around my house a few times. I try to eat 5-6 smaller healthy meals a day. |
Hi ya Joyce,
I am soon to be 47. I would like to get rid of my flab too. I may not go to a gym or work out on the bike or eliptical everyday, but I think it counts if you just make sure that you do something physical each day. Yesterday I shopped with my daughter and mother. What an experience! Afterward though, I walked my dogs about an hour. (Mom is 78 and understandably walks a little slower.) I would like to eat 5-6 small meals a day too, but I don't know how to fit it in. Is it easy for you to do? I would have a hard time at dinner the most, as that is when I cook for my family. Reno sounds like a great retreat! |

I have chosen to walk because I can do that anywhere, whether I am traveling, or subbing. It is also good for my IBS and ostioporosis. Besides, We travel so much I can't make a commitment to a gym. I have chosen the 5-6 smaller meals because it is good for my acid felux and IBS. I try to eat 300-400 calories at breakfast lunch and dinner and have 2-3 snacks a day that are about 100 calories each. I really don't keep exact count. Sometimes I do really good some times I don't. |
HI Every one, Seems like we all follow slightly different plans, the emphesis being on healthy. I think small changes mean a lot, and are easier to make. Drinking the amount of water your body needs, cutting back on portion sizes and making sure you get enough fruit and vegetables. Exercise is the same. Make excuses for exercise. Park at the back of the parking lot. Take the stairs. Play with the kids (grandkids for us) at the park. Take the dog for a long walk (good for him and for you). I've been on a million diets. They don't work for long. I'm focusing on health this time, and that does mean loosing weight and being stronger.
|
The hardest part for me is exercise. I eat pretty healthy. I have been drinking the water, at first, it is always sort of tough. I need to make exercising a priority! I have got to plan it every day. Today, I walked my dog to the vet, it was a good visit, it was only to pick up some heartguard and top-spot, no shots or anything. The vet did come out and try to pet my pup though, but she is a shy girl. She was a rescue, neglectfully and abusively owned previously. She's sweet and has come a long way, but still a little shy. Anyway...
I also have cut back on the meat portions. I find that if I only eat a small amount of meat in a day, sometimes only one meal will include meat, I will lose weight faster. I have protein in other forms. I don't think I could be a total vegetarian though. I am also focusing on the healthful benefits. I know I will never be tiny, I wasn't when I was younger, but I was slender. I would like to wear size tens or twelve, and have them be loose. |
Hi ladies! I've been hoping to find a buddy close to my own age and here's a whole group of you! I am a married mother of 2 grown sons. Our oldest is married and the father of 2 beautiful daughters...Abby will be 5 in September and Emma just turned 2. Our youngest son is also married and currently enlisted in the US Marine Corps (he deploys to Iraq in just over 4 weeks).
My husband and I own and operate a small sheet metal/heating business. Our oldest son also works with us in the family business. I enjoy quilting in my free time as well as doing other craft projects. I need to lose at least 20 more pounds. I'm off to a pretty good start...I've lost 9 pounds so far! I'm counting calories (sort of), watching portions, and trying to cut out the junk and fast food. I hate to exercise, but when I do it's usually walking. I'd love it if we could buddy up or form a small group so we can help keep each other motivated and reach our goals! |
Hi Everyone, Hope you're having a good day. I've been doing pretty well. I'm not feeling up to par at the moment and usually use that as an excuse to not eat properly or exercise! But, it's just and excuse! I did eat pretty good yesteday, but I started this morning off BAD with a donut! Yuck! They were my husbands and I don't even especially like them! so, start from here and don't let one bad decision lead to others. I didn't exercise yesterday but I went to a couple of block garage sales. I walked a lot! I was pretty active also. I cleaned the basement (some). There a million (ok, slight exageration) toys down there. I sorted some of the baby ones to give to good will. I also did laundry and hung the clothes on the line outside. Plus all the housework, like cleaning the kitchen floor on my hands and knees. So a pretty active day. I still think I need more exercise but I try to make sure I'm active on top of it.
I have a little dog that is the Prince of the house too. We adopted him when he was 15 months old and he is such a joy. He's a little Shih Tzu. So loving. It took us a long time to get him to even sit beside us. He had been kept in a cage. I don't think he was abused but very person shy. Didn't know how to show affection, or recieve it. Now is a different story! A lot of work, but so worth it! So, How is every one doing with your diets today? Freda |
Hello Ladies,
I struggled with my food today (made bad choices). I how ever did mow the back and front yards. When I was done with that I jumped in the pool and swam for 40 minutes. When I got out of the pool I pulled some weeds while I dried off. I did drink lots of water today.
I started a new medication for my IBS and anxiety, they make me tired. (I hope once I get use to the meds that the tiredness will go away). I have to be careful not to over heat on these meds too. It is that time of the month for me and I just feel jucky. Good thing DH is out of town. My twin has not had a period in over 2 years, we will be 50 on Sept 6. I wish I was done with them. I hope every did well following what ever your plan is. |
I did alright today. Food-OK, could have done better; walked 50 minutes. It sounds like we are all getting our exercising in!
I work at an elementary school, so I went in to fix up my room a little. I'm on the third floor. I took my DD and my DDog with me. My DD said that I would get my exercise on the stairs. I'm excited but a little blue about school starting. I really like my job, but I'm happy being just a home-body too, as you all know there is always something to do. I guess when we start officially on Monday, I will have to get out of this funk. Maybe it is just this inbetween of waiting for the students to start that gets me. My son is in Korea in the Army at present. He was in Iraq over a year ago, for about a year. He came back safe, but I know there were some bad times over there. He is considering re-enlisting. His 5 years will be up next Spring. |
Good morning every one, How was your weekend? I hope you made good choices are are feeling good about yourself right now! I did ok, got a lot of exercise, drank a lot of water. I didn't do great with the eating, but i didn't do too bad. Still working on that. Every day that you stay on your diet gives you new confidence that you can do it! And think about how healthier you are becoming! We're getting to the age that health is going to become a major concern. Most problems begin to show up in the 50's and really manifest when you reach 60. So now is the time to now only look better but get the health issues under controle also.
One day at a time, Freda |
Good weekend
Good Monday morning all.
I think I did really good this weekend. I was pleased with my food choices and the amount of water I drank. Could have done better with the getting myself moving part of the weekend. No real effort to exercise but I did shampoo the carpets and tried to get some yardwork done in between the rain. DH is out of town so I really enjoyed not having to do anything for him. None if his snoring to wake me, no disturbing his sleep when I want to clean up the room. No one underfoot. |
Good Weekend
Hi All !
I had a pretty good weekend eating wise and otherwise. Got my youngest daughter off to college, that was both a happy and sad day. I'm going to miss her around the house, but she's only an hour away. :) Food wise, I think I did pretty good. We went out Friday night to eat after getting her settled in the dorm and I chose Baked Fish, Green Beans, Asparagus and a salad for my meal. Saturday night was a different story... my husband and son took me to my favorite Chinese Restaurant and I had all of my favorites from the buffet. It was so good, but surprisingly, I didn't eat near as much as I usually do after a week of smaller portions and better choices. Still no sweets though. Then Sunday was weigh in time. I've lost SEVEN pounds ! I was so happy ! I know most of it was water weight but it is still very encouraging. Everyone keep your spirits up and keep up the good work. Thanks for letting me post, it really helps to have somewhere to put down your thoughts. |
Shell, my major weight gain began last summer when my youngest son joined the Marine Corps. The house seemed so empty and I guess I ate to fill the void, because I packed on about 25 pounds! I really give you credit for sticking with your eating plan...you are doing great!
jmacway, shampooing carpets has to count for something...that's a tough job! Enjoy your quiet time while your hubby is gone! Freda, thanks for the encouraging words! You are so right, we need to do this for us and our health! I weighed in yesterday and even though I only lost 1 pound last week it was exciting for me...I am finally into the 150's! :dancer: |
Sounds like we are off to a pretty good start this week!
I weighed in this morning, 1 pound less than last week! It's only a weekly ritual now. I used to get on the scale daily, but that was not working. Gain or loss, just about everyday, and I would be so upset with myself the whole day whenever there was a gain. I have set a goal for me to lose about 7 pounds more by the end of September. Sounds doable! I would like to lose at least 20 lbs., but need to have smaller goals to get there. Anyone else have any mini-goals? Went into school today. I have got to move all of the computers because of possible fire hazards. Everyone does. I realize that it is a safety issue, but I just started this job one year ago, and they were arranged like that for over 10 years. The problem is our building is so old there are not enough outlets. So I guess I will be doing some heavy lifting this week. I still don't know where everything will go. Oh, and the students start Wednesday! I shouldn't be surprised, it seems like every year there is some kind of dilema; yet we always survive! |
great Monday, good start to Tuesday
Hi everyone, I had a great Monday. Followed my plan for the day. Tuesday started off with the battle of a Sonic breakfast vs what I have at home to eat. I ended up having oatmeal and cinnamon toast. I am going to do some sewing today and start packing for my 3 week birthday trip.
Hope things are going well for the rest of you. |
Terrific Tuesday to you all!
Did well with the food today. I actually could not finish my dinner. Me? From the clean plate club! Leave food on my plate? I did pack it up for leftovers though; "waste not, want not." I got my library all organized today! Feels good. I was figuring that I would waste a day moving furniture/computers around, but when I went into school, the custodians and maintenance guy had already fixed the computer lab. I only had to change around my personal computer and desk, but actually DH did it. How sweet! I would have been hesitant to unhook cords and plugs, plus move my desk and a few shelves, probably would have taken me half the day; so with his help, it took a little more than an hour. What a guy! I'm glad you're doing good Joyce! The more we stay on track, the more power it gives us to continue and succeed! I hope everyone else is doing well too. |
Hi SuzyMc,
The house does seem empty, but my son is still at home. He'll be 17 next month and is a Senior in High School. I've been doing good this week, eating healthy, but can't seem to get motivated on daily exercise. I walked a mile on my treadmill on Monday, but didn't get on it yesterday. Work has been really busy this week and I'm just pooped when I get home. The "Spa" I joined last week has really been a disappointment, its closed every afternoon when I get off work even though their hours state differently. My husband told me I need to get my money back, and I would if I could ever find them open. Maybe at lunch one day.... Everyone keep up the good work ! |
Wonderfull Wednesday
I walked 2.75 miles through the neighborhood this morning, and swam for 40 minutes this afternoon. I got of the scales this monring, like I do every Wednesday and was pleased with the numbers I saw. I made good food choices today as well.
Had to go to the airport mid-day when the heat index was 103. Boy was it warm in my car, I have no AC. I hope you are pleased with your choices today |
Half way through another week and so far so good!
I really do need to exercise more though...it would be so much easier and a lot more fun if I had someone willing to drag me out the door and walk with me every day. Oh well, I guess I just need to get off my bum and self motivate! ;) Shell, I'd be asking for my money back too! What good is a gym if they are never open when you go to work out? You might be better off to put that money towards a treadmill or other piece of equipment. Wow Joyce! I wonder how many pounds you lost by sweating in your car today? Make sure you drink some extra water...that kind of heat is brutal! JLoubug, how nice that your hubby was willing to help you today! It must be a good feeling knowing that you're all done and ready in half the time! Keep up the good work everyone! |
Good morning everyone. It's another cool day here and I can't wait to get outside and do the things that I haven't wanted to do in the heat....Like take a walk and work in the yard. I've been doing ok with the diet and exercise, but could do better. I'm having a hard time starting here!!!
Suzymac, It is important to exercise and much easier to lose weight too. But, it's boring. I try to solve it a little bit by using book tapes. It's always nicer to walk with some one else, but you can't let that that dictate your walking. They quit and you can't! So, it's up to each of us to motivate ourseoves. Shell, I don't blame you for wanting your money back. And you shouldn't have any problem getting it if they gave you false information about the hours. Joyce (I have a sister named Joyce) I am giving you a big hand, girlfriend! You are doing so good with the exercise! Jen, That stomach must be shrinking! They give you way to much in restaurants anyway. I always ask for a doggie bag and portion out what I want to eat BEFORE I start. That way i'm not tempted! I know there a few dog lovers in here so I'm going to tell yoy what happened to ny Nieces dog. She took him to get groomed and 2 days later he came down with an eye infection. It was the weekend and she couldn't get to the vet for 2 more days. When she did take him in the vet told her that some one had stuck him in the eye with something sharp, like grooming sissors. He will probally have to have surgery and may still loose the eye. My niece is reluctant to say anything to the groomer. I would be furious! If the groomer had told her right away she could have taken him right to the vet and maybe saved his sight! The weather is cool and wonderful this morning so I'm off the take my walk! Hope you all have a good day! Freda |
Oh that poor pup! I hope the infection can be cleared up and that he won't need surgery! If I were your niece I would certainly be talking with the groomer and then sending her the vet bills!
I know I just have to make up my mind that I AM going to exercise at least 30 minutes every day no matter what. The weather is beautiful here today too, so I guess it's a good day to start.... Have a good day everyone! |
DH and I walked our usual walk of 2.75 miles through the neighborhood this morning as the sun was coming up.
Middle child called and said lunch, with green salad and garlic bread. Tonight we will have a light dinner. I have fought the munchies all afternoon, I gave in but did not go over board. To make up for the extra munchies I was in the pool for just about an hour. I am working tomorrw at a near by middle school (I am a substitute teacher), so I will pack a healthy lunch. Hope you made healthy choices today the slim me Sorry to hear about the puppy. Some one should talk to the groomer, I think they should pay the vet bill. Suzymac Sometimes I walk with my radio and earphones to keep me company, sometimes it's the best time of my day to have a talk with my maker. |
Fellow Dog Lovers Unite!!! Get that groomer, or whatever they call themselves! I would have no problem talking to him/her.
Similarily, when I crack a tooth in a very nice restaurant, but don't let them know... I know, I know. Why is it when something happens to me, I don't think it is that important; but if something would happen to a family member, (and yes, dogs are our family members!), or friend, I would have no hesitation. I hope the vet can help. Sorry I got all worked up over that, anyway... Doing well today. I have been packing a nice fruit salad, (I even made it so I know it is all natural), and yogurt for lunch. I exercised already too! I had to take a two minute break for my pup though. I can tell she gets tired when she slows down and looks up at me. She layed on the grass, under a tree in front of a school and got a mini belly rub. What a life! |
Happy Friday everyone! For the most part it sounds like we've all done pretty well this week...hopefully we can carry it over through the weekend!
I'll have to see about maybe making up a CD with some "walking" music and see if that helps. A book on CD is a good idea too, but what I really need is someone to push me out the door! I really do need to make more of an effort to walk every day now that my eating is pretty much under control. |
leaving on a jet plane
I am going out of town for 3 weeks. Here are my goals for that time.
Daily 3 mile walk Lots of water/maybe one soda a week Make healthy food choices portion control/ eat half of what I am served I don't know when I will have an internet connection, but we are taking a lap top. I will check in when I can |
Have a great time on your vacation Joyce! Remember to have fun, which I'm sure you will! I think we are all trying to make this a healthy way of life, so we're in it for the long hall!
I indulged myself on Friday, so I tried to do better the rest of the weekend. I feel better, even my clothes feel a little loser. I guess I will see tomorrow when I weigh myself. I think it must be the exercise. |
I had myself all ready to get moving on Friday, but my husband's 90 year old aunt fell Friday evening and I've been at the hospital with her all weekend (she lives alone and doesn't have children so a lot of her care falls on us. She's banged up and very sore, but no broken bones.), so once again exercise has been put on hold. I'm home for the afternoon and I'm going to get some groceries and try and get the grass cut, so pushing the mower around the yard will count towards my exercise this week. I did weigh in today and I am 2 pounds lighter, so the weight is still coming off...of course I've been so busy that I haven't had a lot of time to over eat!
Have a wonderful trip and good luck with your goals Joyce...we'll miss you! |
Good Monday morning every one. A new week has begain and a new chance to make healthy choices. I did ok, not great this weekend. I had to work all weekend and that's always a stress. One of my patients went bad and I came home and ate! I get home too late and i'm too tired to exercise and that is how I handle the stress! BAD, BAd! But today is a new day, a new beginning. Today I will eat healthy and exercise! Hope the rest of you have a good day too! Freda
|
I'm with you Freda. Sometimes it sounds like AA or something, but we, at least I, have to treat each day as a new start. If we take care of the present, hopefully the tomorrows will become easier to deal with.
SuzyMc, sorry to hear about your Aunt. Thank goodness she has you to count on. Great going on the weight loss! I watched Oprah after school today. Good show! It was about healthy things in your diet, and vitamins. Gave me a lot of information, and motivation, which I can always use! |
Hello my 3FC buddies, I am home and ready to get on track. I had a great time celebrating a 50th birthday with my twin sister, celebrating 31 year of marriage with DH. I got to love and cuddle on a great niece, whose twin brother is still in ICU. The goals I set for myself didn't help me lose any weight, I stayed the same. So maybe I built some muscle with all the walking and stair climbing. I have just in the last couple of months started having anxiety attacks when I am feeling confined, like in a taxi, on a bus, in the elevator. I had gone to the doctor about it in between trips and got some xanax. It really helped, but I am so glad to me home.
SuzyMc, sorry to hear about DH's your aunt. She is lucky to have you around. So how is every one doing? |
