Somebody to stick with me

Hi there. I am looking to find a buddy to stick together with on the road to losing weight. I am looking to lose about 20 pounds through exercise and diet (if i can control myself) But relying heavily on the exercise portion. Please respond if you are looking for support too.

JEO1982 05-11-2004 09:13 AM

Hey there...I'd be glad to stick with you...I have more to lose then you do, so I'll be going through this for a while....I'm probably not the best person for advice as I am new to a lot of this, but I am great for encouragement! ;)

2bThin2 05-11-2004 09:31 AM

hi there. Glad to meet you. Have you set up a plan of action?

JEO1982 05-11-2004 10:14 AM

Yes... I joined Curves in March and I started eatting better...no more junk food or munching because I am bored....I have been eatting smaller portions and trying to make healthier choices.... What are your plans?

2bThin2 05-11-2004 10:38 AM

I bought a treadmill and a bunch of videos and now workout everyday for about an hour. I try not to eat dairy and am trying to watch what I eat. Unfortunately I have no will power and tend to eat constantly through the day. that's really where I need you to come in and keep me motivated.

How do you like curves? My sister and a couple of my friends do it. I thought about joining but since I dropped all the cash on my at-home "gym" I think it will have to be postponed.

Well it sounds like we are on the right track. I think we will both do great.

Well are you at home all day or do you work? One thing you could try if you are compelled to snack is not keep any junk in the house...only get things like grapes, or strawberries and other fruit/vegetables/healthy snacks...Also you could try not have a real breakfast or lunch, instead break them into seperate snacks that you can spread out a little through the day... Also, I was wondering if you were lactose intolerant, since you said you were cutting out dairy.... I have read that milk can help you lose weight and for women the calcium is very important...

You might want to check those two little tid-bits out and read further into it if you aren't lactose intolerant.... ;)

2bThin2 05-11-2004 11:33 AM

I work in an office....which doesn't help cause people are always bringing candy and cake type stuff in. I like the idea of eating small snacks instead of breakfast and lunch. One of my favorite things is naked juices. It contains about 1 pound of fruit and the only other ingredient is water. I figure I can have that as my first "snack of the day"

I am lactose intolerant and take calcium and multi-vitamins daily. Since I don't get a lot of calcium I know I have to take the supplement.

Joanne

Well that must stink being lactose intolerant...but at least it makes icecream less of a temptation ;) (Trying to look on the bright side of everything)... I've never heard of naked juices... where do you get something like that?

trenice2001 05-11-2004 01:53 PM

Hi there, 2bthin2, I would enjoy talking with someone and joining in with other people who have weight to loose. I am new here as well and have been trying to lose weight for about 2 years now off and on. I started my weight loss in Oct/2002. I have managed to loose 49 pounds to date and not gain anything in the process. I have a real problem eating right. I have exercising down to a science because I enjoy the classes that I attend at my school. Its that eating think that I just cant correct. Anyways, I am looking to finally shed this last 24 pounds. Its hard but if I can stick to eating right I can do it. Look forward to talking with you.

Welcome trenice. I just joined today since I'm finally ready to get serious on this. It sounds like you are doing great so keep up the good work.

I wish the lactose intolerance worked in my favor but it wouldn't deter me from ice cream, cheese or chocolate. Now that I'm avoiding dairy all together it's a little easier.

Has anyone tried the firm tapes. I got sucked into the infomercials (it doesn't matter what it is i can't seem to change the channel) and ordered it after reading reviews of the programs on several different websites. This is all part of stepping up the workouts I have been doing. I know I am building muscle it's just buried under the nasty fat.

trenice2001 05-11-2004 02:30 PM

I have never heard of the firm tapes. I dont do much exercise at home mostly outdoors. I have been thinking about buying some tapes to do at home. My birthday is coming up and may get an elliptical machine but I dont know. Will I get on it, hummmmmmmmm, I dont know. Let me know about some of your new workout tapes, maybe I could try that first. Thats not too much of an investment. My favorite is step, I love step aerobics. Have you tried any of those?

2bThin2 05-11-2004 03:04 PM

I used to do one religously....but when I recently moved I threw it away.......if only I had known. I have been doing pilates and bar method type exercises. But they don't really make you take off any weight....they just build muscle. I bought two higher energy tapes which I received last night. The first one i tried looked like they were in fast forward mode and I could have hurt some one if I had really tried it. The other one is cicuit training. I managed to complete it and liked it. It definitly made me sweat which I guess was the point. How have you taken off weight?

Jenn - i get the naked juice at a little deli near my house. You can check it out on nakedjuice.com. I'm partial to the berry and strawberry ones.

JEO1982 05-11-2004 05:32 PM

Thanks Joanne - They it in the city so maybe I will try it next time I'm in or around Boston...Also I have hard of the firm tapes but never tried them myself... you should check the exercise threads to see what people say about them.

Trenice - Ellipictal mahines are a great workout if you can get yourself to stick with it...It works the whole body at once pretty much so it's worth a shot... you've come so far already!

2bThin2 05-12-2004 11:17 AM

I have never tried an elliptical machine but I hear they are fantastic. I guess to try one out I would either have to embarress myself in a store or join a gym........lesser of the two evils. I have never fancied the idea of going to a gym to work out with people I don't know. Maybe I am too self-conscious........but I wouldn't want people looking at me thinking thank god she joined....poor thing. LOL

JEO1982 05-12-2004 12:32 PM

I felt the same way... That's why I joined Curves, it's all women which is a better, but at first I still would only go if I was with my mom or my sister  Sometimes I still feel like people are judging me, but usually not, and I just don't look at other people in hopes they won't look at me, especially since it seems like I sweat so much when I'm there, it seems like I'm the only one with sweating :o

2bThin2 05-13-2004 07:51 AM

Avoiding eye contact is always a good plan. I used to go to the gym when I was in college......and there were always these athletes in there that were the perfect size. Talk about intimidating. I actually find it easier to get mysdelf to work out at home, cause I don't have to go anywhere. Just move a table and chair and off I go.

Well have a great one and keep up all the hard work

elizabook 05-13-2004 11:21 PM

I'm interested in joining Curves as well. Anybody in that who can tell me about it? Because it's all women it seems like it would be easier for me. If I can't exercise in front of my own husband, I don't think I could do it in front of complete strangers!

JEO1982 05-14-2004 08:08 AM

I go to Curves and I love it! I go almost everyday... It's all women of all shapes and sizes, so most people there know how you feel about exercising in front of people.... The people the are really nice and it's just a great atmosphere.... Before Curves there was no way I was going to join a gym... But my mom talked me into going there and I'm glad she did, it is so different from all the other gyms I've ever been to.... It is definitely worth looking into ;)

2bThin2 05-17-2004 10:08 AM

I finally got the firm tapes and I was kind of surprised how much lungins and squating are done in the workout. Not great for me since I have arthritis. Oh well.... But I did resurrect my step tapes by Keli Roberts which I used to do all the time. I have to admit it kicked my butt and I was sweating like crazy. Guess I'll just do what I can.

Have a great day

JEO1982 05-17-2004 12:39 PM

I always sweat like crazy when I go to the gym.... My mom said she wished she could sweat like me  But if you are sweating at least you know you are getting a good workout ;)

2bThin2 05-17-2004 02:18 PM

Very true. At least I know I am doing something for myself.....How has everyone else been doing on there weight loss adventure?

JEO1982 05-17-2004 02:37 PM

I weighed in on Saturday and all my TOM gain was gone and then some... I was at 203.8#...down from 206.2 last weekend... I was excited because I wasn't expecting to see a loss this week when I was so bloated at my official weighin/measure for the month... :D

2bThin2 05-17-2004 02:56 PM

Good for you! That's great. I got weighed last week when I had a physical for my new job. Their scale said I was 178.....mine says 168. I like mine better and am sticking which that one. But if I really did gain weight (I have been too scard to get on mine after that) i really think it was muscle mass since I have been very good about working out.

JEO1982 05-17-2004 04:12 PM

You are right in that if you actually gained anything it will be muscle but I really doubt you gained 10#... I would not be afraid to weigh myself because often times doctors don't get their scales calibrated as often as they should...so just keep that in mind and keep up the exercising!

nova_jen 05-18-2004 08:18 AM

Good Morning everyone,
I was just reading your comments about how some of you feel about going to the gym. Try not to let other people make you feel badly- I belong to a chain of gyms with multiple locations and the clientele varies somewhat depending on location- if I ever feel that I may be being judged I just look right back at the person and think 'hey- at least I am here and doing something!'

The funny thing was about a month ago I was on the same schedule as a supermodel and her actor husband and often found myself on the machines at the same time- there is nothing like being sourrounded at mirrors at a time like that! Anyway I found the whole experience entertaining and a reminder that we all need work or at least up keep.
Anyway congratulations on all of your efforts and success.
Jen
PS If anyone can explain to me why it is so difficult to get off your butt and get to the gym somedays even when you know how good you will feel when its over? I would love to have this mystery solved!
