Teaching an old dog new tricks

Hi everybody.

I find myself in a most curious position. I am 64 years old (Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm 64.....yes, I grew up with the Beatles). I have been svelte most of my life.

In my 20's & 30's I weighed 150. Then all through my 40's & 50's I was at a good "fighting weight", 180 (although I'm a lover and not a fighter).

Now, in my 60's I find that I've grown a paunch. I quit smoking almost ten years ago but I really can't attribute my weight gain to that. My tummy blossomed within the past couple of years.

So I find myself in the curious and unfamiliar position of needing to lose weight. Or more specifically, this damned pot belly.

Well, I'm following a low carb diet (Low Carb Dieting for Dummies is a really helpful tome). I've joined a gym and I go six days a week.

During the past month I've lost 12 pounds but I have not lost an inch around my waiste. That's a bit frustrating. But, afterall it's only been a month.

I am retired, in excellent health and I feel fantastic. I go to the doctor's every six months, I just had my prostrate and colon checked and I expect to be around for a while. I just need to lose this spare tire.

In Florida and living the dream!

Welcome to the forum :)
I recommend researching cortisol, checking out the Mark's Daily Apple website, experimenting/researching foods that make you bloat/retain water, consider limiting your wheat intake, and doing strength training, NOT running :)

I realise that's a lot with no explanation, but give it a google if you feel like it :)

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out.

Welcome fellow Floridian!

I recommend running. ;) (Not just to be contrary, but because I love it.)

So jealous that you haven't had to worry about a pot belly until now, I swear I got the one I have now when I was 12!

Thanks, but my running days are long gone. I'm mostly interested in doing low impact type stuff. Going to try a series of exercises that specifically attack the ABs.
