Should I tell people?

Dear all,

I am new to the forum and will need help and encouragement please !!!! I have lost 10 pounds so far but still have 46 still to go....

I am following the 12 minute diet (i'm a little embarrassed to say I listen to a download to lose weight - a bit gimmicky I know but hey ho !!!! )but fingers, toes & everything else crossed... I listen to the download everyday and my food cravings seem to have stopped. I was a bit scared to "let go" of calorie counting and "dieting" as such but I am sick of constantly being on a diet and people thinking I'm weak with no willpower.

I haven't told anyone I am dieting again and I think they would just laugh at me for using a download - I know it's working though and I'm actually feeling happier on my diet than ever......that's why I joined fat chicks , so that I could get help and support without people thinking - oh here we go with another diet... Is it silly of me to keep it a secret from everyone? I would love to just lose the weight and then let them see it for themselves...

Hi Dossy! :welcome: Your health, including your weight and any diet associated with controlling it, is your business. I wouldn't tell anyone who isn't going to be supportive. I'm so glad you joined 3FC because you will get lots of support here! And if the downloads are working for you by working on a subconscious level to control your cravings, why wouldn't you use them? I think it's a great idea! I believe we should each use the plan that works best for us (except, of course, for extreme plans that are dangerous). So now that you are one of us, browse around the site and jump right in! Good luck!

LiannaKole 11-15-2013 03:51 PM

First of all, :welcome2: welcome to 3FC! We're glad to have you here!

Second, I don't think it's silly at all to keep your weight loss efforts a secret. I never tell people when I'm working to lose weight. They notice when they notice. It actually gives me more motivation to not share it with others (that, and I've seen it make things 10x harder for people who do share).

It's your business what you're doing. If you don't want to share, don't share. It honestly is completely up to you.

Hi Dossy, welcome. I just joined and I hope to see you around. All the best on your efforts! It is inspiring to read that you are happy with what you are doing.

Welcome to the forum! I'm new here too. When I started my journey I didn't tell a single soul. Not because I was afraid to, but because I wanted to see who would take notice. I KNEW I was going to stick with it this time. It's a matter of my health at this point. It was a very pleasant surprise when a coworker complimented me out of the blue on the weight loss.

Good luck!

justsayno 11-15-2013 08:32 PM

Hi I wouldn't tell anyone if you don't want to. I think it would be interesting to keep it to yourself & just wait & see who notices or says something to you first.

Fiona W 11-15-2013 08:36 PM

You're telling us, Dossy, that's what counts! Just keep posting here, and you'll find lots of support for your efforts. Post every day if you can, and in a few weeks you'll be able to get your very own weight-loss ticker. Best of luck!

Dossy 11-17-2013 04:04 PM

Hey everyone,

Yes it is so lovely to feel understood - I will keep posting and more importantly I will keep going with the download _ I'll keep you posted with my progress

Welcome Dossy, I am new to this group also. I will began the shred diet for the second time. I lost 10 pounds the first time and I am hoping to shred 10 more.

blue1908 11-17-2013 05:33 PM

shred diet

is anyone doing the shred diet? I will begin it on Monday for the second time.

Welcome to the boards. If not telling helps then stick to it. And don't worry about the download. If it helps you keep listening to it. I find that I do better if I listen or watch dieting related things. I find it inspiring and encouraging. So keep listening to it if it's helping you. I also find this board helps encourage me (which is why I keep coming back!)
P.S.
Anyone that laughs at you for trying something to get healthy clearly is the one with a issue.

Confessional...I don't even fully tell my husband and we are under the same roof! I completely understand the feeling that it is such a personal journey that when others are "in the know" I can feel...exposed.

Weird how that can work...

mainecyn 11-17-2013 10:23 PM

Your health and choices are your business. I didn't tell a soul I was trying to drop weight, not even my husband. I didn't want everyone watching me or criticism on my food choices. It also made me less self concious about "dieting" I joined an online group with people like myself and shared everything with them. I found nothing but support online.

There's no law saying you have to tell anyone. Ive still never used the word diet in our household or told my husband. Of course hes noticed the weight loss but I just tell him ive changed my eating habits. I just cant tell him for some reason.

Do what works for you!

I haven't told anyone either. Well, not true. I told 1 friend because it just came up at the same time as her latest attempt. And also my husband, of course, and he, too, kind of came to the same moment so that's helpful.

I didn't tell anyone else, tho. I just didn't want it to become a "thing", but it's getting close to where I'm surprised no one has said anything yet. It's close to 20 which sounds like a lot; but when you have a lot to lose, it doesn't really change you too much as I myself just today figured out where it came from (my legs). But because it's still all around the middle, my clothes aren't fitting too differently yet.

I told close friends that I see enough that they would notice a difference in my eating/drinking or (lack there of) all receptive...also a friend is on her own weightloss journey...helpful.

I didn't tell my significant other, (at the time) and became a little upset when nothing was said after a 30 lb weightloss...I was then told that the intent was to not offend. All understandable.

skintoskincombat 11-19-2013 02:38 PM

I wouldn't tell anyone only because people can sometimes say stupid things when you tell them you are dieting or how you are losing the weight. Everyone has an opinion and sometimes peoples opinions can be very discouraging and upsetting. Keep doing what you are doing tho and wait for them to comment :)

Hello

Hi I'm Cherie,

I'm new to the site - I need to lose over 70 lbs as my doctor said I need to. I have tried loads of diets and failed miserably. I am seriously considering hypnosis - has anyone tried it ?

Hi everyone,

Sorry - I know I promised to keep posting, but what with the holidays.....

Guess what? - I have lost a total of 15 pounds - I didn't even struggle over the hols .. seriously this 12 minute diet is AMAZING - it has given me the oomph to just get on with it -

I did tell everyone in the end - once they saw I was losing weight I couldn't help but blurt it out !!!!!

Hope you are all doing well

Dossy xxxx

BettyBooty 01-30-2014 08:51 AM

Good for you, Dossy!

I think only my husband really knows the effort I am putting forth, and that is because we like our wine and I needed him to know we HAD to cut back for me to lose weight. I don't really say anything until someone notices, anyway, but I tend to stick to things like I have started running more and doing some pilates instead of going into too much about how I am doing it. I figure it really is no one's business but mine.

Velvet bean 01-30-2014 11:03 AM

It's not silly at all! :)

I would give you a link o the study, but I can't yet (I guess google scholar will find it for you) that found out, that if you tell your friends about your goals (not necessarily about weight loss) you are less likely to reach them. It has something to do with the feeling, that you already did something when you talk about it.

There is also a Ted Talk about it by Derek Sivers - Keep your goals to yourself. :)

EasySpirit 01-30-2014 11:35 AM

I discuss my dieting with three YMCA aquaintances who are also dealing with their weight. I have not mentioned it to family or friends.

Welcome 2 The Forum

Gkm130 02-02-2014 01:48 AM

Hey...I haven't told a single person. My husband thinks I'm great the way I am. But I feel terrible about gaining the 15-20 lbs that I have in the last 5 years. This is my battle and my challenge. When people notice your loss it feels great. But the challenge is yours. I love the support you get here...very unique to your very own issues. Cherish the support.
