3FC might restrict certain functions for people who have just joined. One of those functions might be PMs. (They probably want to avoid people joining up for the sole purpose of sending spam to members). I seem to recall that you have to wait a certain number of days and/or have a certain number or posts in order to PM.

I'm sure a moderator will be along to advise. I do believe it's 20 days and 20 posts.

I was playing around with stuff in the Quick Links (my "learning new things" method is to push random buttons to see what happens) section of the toolbar and saw the Open Buddy List option. I think if you add each other as buddies, then open your list, you might be able to PM. To add someone, just click on their user name and an option to add will pop up. Haven't done that yet to make sure, but I hope it helps!
