Hello, My first online support group
OK, my first real attempt to lose weight in 10years. There are so many programs how do you decide on one that is right for you? 100lbs overweight and never exercised, so just getting off the couch feels like exercise and leaves me out of breath. I suppose Atkins offers more food choices, maybe it will work, but how to start an exercise program being so out of shape, I have to say I am lost. Any Help would be appreciated.:^:

Boy, do I know where you're coming from! I was almost 20 lbs heavier than you at the same height. Calorie counting has been a lifesaver for me, and I do mean that literally. I can have whatever foods I want, as long as it's within my calorie goal. Your eating also improves by default, because you realize you can get more bang for your buck from high-density, low calorie veggies and fruit, grains, lean meats, etc. You can use websites and apps like MyFitnessPal to help you track for free. Whatever you choose, good luck! It's not easy sometimes, but it's worth it! Welcome to 3FC!

I am also a calorie counter and was totally out of shape when I started. When it comes to exercise, I would say start small and gradually build up from there.
When I first started, I took everything I had to do my elliptical machine on the easiest level for 7 minutes. Within a month I was up to 20 minutes and increasing the intensity level. After 3 1/2 months of regular exercise, I do 30 minutes at the top intensity levels. You do have to push yourself but not so far that you get frustrated or injure yourself. I do not go to a gym, I have purchased used equipment off of craigslist and Play it Again Sports. I am very uncoordinated so doing exercise videos is not something I have enjoyed. Take a walk around the block, get some small hand heights and begin working on your arm strength. My mom, who is 67, has had to knee replacements, is obese is dieting and has started exercising with me. She started slow on the treadmill and using light hand weights, she does feel better and is gradually noticing an increase in strength. Send me a message if you have any questions. |
