Default New Here - Would Love to Find Thyroid Disease Buddies

Hi! I found this forum a while back and recently stumbled across it again. It seems very helpful, inspiring and supportive. I'm glad to have found it!

I am a 31 yr old mom of 4 under 10 and a full time university senior. I am stressed!!!! I have autoimmune thyroid disease which I have been treated for since the age of 21. I have stayed 40-60 lbs overweight since that time, but was thin all of my life before that. My whole family is thin as well, so being heavy feels unnatural for me.

I am currently 60 lbs overweight and pretty miserable. I am constantly fatigued, have joint pain and feel terrible about myself. I went to weight loss specialist (MD) for the first time a couple of weeks ago out of desperation. He put me on the HCG/500 calorie diet. I have been doing it for 4 days, but feel terrible and intuitively think it's not the right choice for me.

I have had some success with Atkin's years ago, but the rich foods made me feel heavy and kind of gross after a while. I have been eying the paleo diet, wondering if it might me a bit better for me.

Anyhow, I would love to make friends here - especially ones who have found successful ways to lose weight (in a reasonable way) with thyroid disease and keep it off!

Hi and welcome to the board!

I also have about 60 more pounds to lose. Instead of thinking about the number SIXTY, I like to think about it in smaller groups. Like... first I need to lose another 20, and then I'll need to lose another 30, and then 10 more! Haha, I know it's silly, but it keeps me from getting overwhelmed.

Good luck in finding an eating plan that's right for you. Just remember that whatever plan you pick needs to be something that you can "easily" put up with for the rest of your life. We're making permanent changes here! :0) Find your ideal plan and stick to it, that's your recipe for success.

I also have thyroid disease and can't seem to budge the 30 lbs that keeps me overweight, but I keep on doing the right thing taking my meds, diet and exercise. I wish you luck on you journey. You have come to the right place.

Our situations are very similar!

I'm a 31 year old mom of 4 (12, 11, 7 and 10 months) who is hypothyroid and have been treated since I was 26. I'm also tyring to lose 60 lbs.

I tried atkins, but I'm not a big meat eater. I tried nutrisystem, hated the food. Had success with ww but wasn't eating healthy (stayed in my points range but ate junkfood).

Tomorrow it will be 2 weeks since I started my "new plan". It's a combo plan of sorts. I use a lot of wonderslim products (similar to medifast) but keep my carbs below 80 and make sure I get 1200 calories in. So far it's been working and I feel great with no cravings.

Dr was testing my thyroid levels every 6 months (last done 2 weeks ago) and I'm going to ask they be done a little more often while I'm trying this "diet" since there is a lot of soy involved which can mess up synthroid absorbtion. I've been tired a lot lately and thought for sure it was my thyroid, but as it turns out I'm deficient in b12. I've been taking supplements but we'll see how that goes. (getting tested again today and if the levels aren't good we start regular b12 shots).

I strongly recommend that you ask your dr for a full bloodwork test. I did in Sept. and though it took me awhile to get my butt motivated to actually lose some weight (aside from the b12 I'm also deficient in vitamin d and my liver levels are high, not enough for treatment, but enough to say "hey you have a fatty liver...lose some weight"). I'm going to ask the dr to run the full set of tests every year to be certain that the things that were healthy stay healthy and to see if my liver improves through the weightloss. My sugar levels were always on the high end of normal also so I want to make sure that's in check (and curious to see if it improves with dieting).

I started using fitday to track my vitamins and nutrition also. found that I"m lacking potassium but since I won't eat a banana (too many carbs lol) I've begun taking supplements so I don't have that to worry about either.

My kids need me so I have to take care of myself. They deserve a healthy, happy mother and I need to set a good example for them. That goes the same for you.

If you need a buddy I'd be happy to be your pal. We can start our 60lb journey together and keep each other motivated while we deal with stress of parenting 4 children! We can do this!

Nice to meet you, ladies! Thanks for the warm welcome.

Guttergirl - Yes! Our situations ARE very similar! Lol. Even our bodies appear to be similar. I am 5'7" and 190 wanting to be between 130 and 140. I could really be happily a bit heavier, if I had some good muscle weight going on. I love to do outdoor sports. I miss rock climbing with my husband! I feel like I am wasting my life. Turning 30 last year made me realize that time will keep going on whether I'm ready or not. I don't want to lose my youth to being to fat to do anything I want to do!!!!

It would definitely be nice to have a buddy that is at the same place I am *exactly*! That is cool. 31, 4 kids, almost identical body for weight/height, thyroid disease, and judging from pics - super cool alterna-mom. I'm ready for a big change. Let's do it!
