Too late to start again???
I'm 59 years old. I NEVER thought I'd still be big at this age. I always thought of my excess weight as just a temporary thing and now I've let time slip by. Is it too late to lose????
I know my skin will not bounce back when I lose weight so I won't be able to lose as much as I could have at 30 or 40. I guess saggy skin is better than such as big booty & rubbing thighs! Certainly more healthy! I just sort of stumbled across this website and was SO excited to find it. I've lost weight before with organized support groups but as soon as I stopped going to the meetings, I would gain my weight back. With 3FC, I can have support 24/7!!! Some of those weight loss stories are so inspirational. I'm going to continue to read and learn from all of you. I'm eager to get started! Yikes! What do I do?? I think counting calories may be the best for me. I love healthy food...no problem there. I love all foods. My problem is portion control. Today if Day 1 to a healthier life.:carrot: |
its NEVER too late. you will find tons of help and support here.
good luck!!!! |
Welcome! I am glad you are joining us.
I agree with Julia--it is never too late. I wish you the very best with your weight loss journey! Cheers, J |
Hi and welcome to 3FC!
It's never too late! Good luck with your goals :cheer: Hugs Michelle |
Julia and the rest are right, it's never too late! Welcome to the site and you're definitely in the right place for support.
Good luck on your goal! |
Ditto. I am 53 and have gained and lost weight for years. This time, I am finally doing it the right way. Cut out junk food, watch portion size, and EXERCISE. Yep, it works. I am not losing as fast as the younger girls, but I'm losing just the same. Another plus, I feel so much better. Explore this site. There is a lot of good information and the support is the best! Welcome!

I agree with "It's never to late". I am 58 and I joined this forum in August of this year. We can do this!!! :carrot: :broc: |
54 and going strong!
We need a "50 and Hot & Determined" group! lol I know there's a 50s thread but, the last time I looked, it felt like it was more silver surfer orientated than I feel. (Disclaimers follow: that was the last time I looked; nothing wrong with being silver, it's just not where I am) PrincessGrandma (great name): one of the best ways to start is to have a week of writing down everything you eat, without necessarily making big, DIET-type choices, a) it'll give you real insight into where you need to make changes; b) you may find as the week goes on that you begin to make choices based on 'do I really want to have to write down that I ate THIS?' Good luck! |
welcome! It's never too late!

Hi and welcome!!!
It's never too late to adopt a healthier lifestyle and enhance your appearance too. I'm nearing 50 and I know that losing weight has helped me. Being lighter is much kinder on my joints and I look younger too! I'm a pack rat and I have clothes from when I was thin decades ago. It's been fun finding clothes that I can now fit in again, and many of those retro styles are back in fashion! Counting calories works well for me and many others on this site. Join in and good luck on your journey! |
Thanks to all!!
Love the encouragement & advice. I will write down everything I eat this week. Love the "50's & HOT & Determined"...especially the HOT part. One of the problems about gaining all this weight is that I don't feel "sexy". Clothes don't fit right or look good. Right now, I have my goal set at 190. Losing 50 lbs seems overwhelming so I don't want to make it any lower at this time. Right now, I will be totally THRILLED when I get below 200!

There are a LOT of successful 50+ folk around here. You definitely CAN do this!
I am a calorie counter and think it is a GREAT plan. While I do have some saggy-baggy going on, I'm really surprised by how much my skin has shrunk (and is continuing to shrink - even 15 months after reaching my goal). Maybe my expectations were low, but I am genuinely surprised by how my shape has changed during this journey. In addition to the "Golden Girls" thread - there is a "non-silver" group already established. The Active Folks Over 50 thread could definitely use some new posters. Not many of us posting these days. C'mon over and join us. We would absolutely LOVE to breathe some new life into the place. It was established for the purpose of bringing together those of us that definitely DON'T feel "silver". JayEll is our moderator - and she ROCKS! Laurie :scooter: |
I am not over 50 but approaching it fast nonetheless! I will be 45 in a month and am at my lightest weight ever (unless you count those tender years in grade school, LOL). It is never too late to feel better! I did not find age being a major factor in weight loss. The biggest factor for me was making getting my brain into gear and just committing to eating better. You can do this and you will find so much support here at 3FC!

Welcome, PrincessGrandma!
I am another 50+ (58) who is relatively new to the forums and have never found a more supportive group than this one. I agree it's never too late; over the years I've battled the extra baggage - gained and lost, you know the drill - but this is the heaviest I've been and it began to have some health implications. And I think for us over 50 that is a much more important consideration than just the way we look, although that's important as well. Calorie counting should work really well for you, especially since you indicated you like healthy foods. Get the portions under control, and exercise, exercise, exercise! I think moving our 50+ bodies is the key to successful weight loss. Of course, make sure you check with your doctor before starting any rigorous exercise program, but you can certainly start out by walking, even if it's just 15-20 minutes a day. Welcome, and good luck! |
Welcome to 3fc's! It's a great place for support.
Please don't feel that it's ever too late! I'm 45 and although I do have plenty of loose skin, I don't have any regrets about losing weight. I think you might really like calorie counting. It's a great help with portion control. You are already ahead of the game since you like healthy food! Best of luck. |
48 here and forget the whole peri and post menopausal women can't lose weight. Hogwash. I'm closing in on 50 pounds lost.
Honestly, I'm finding it much EASIER to lose now than I did when I was younger. I'm more confident, have more experience tackling big projects, and am not so hung up about my appearance. Most of weight loss is in the head and we're not just older, we're WISER. Welcome aboard. |

Never Too Late!
Hi Princess Grandma
I had lapband surgery when I was almos 60! I started at 256 lbs. I'm 5'4 1/2". I have lost 60 lbs so far. I work out at the gum 4 days a week. I have a personal trainer. And I am delighted that I did it. I feel wonderful! I can actually RUN around with my 2 year old granddaughter. Yes, I have had challenges, and loose skin is one. But my general health was more important. Write me and let me know if you did it Rosemary |
I used to have lots of trouble with portion control, now I have a motto on my fridge-
"You can always have more... Tomorrow! Wouldn't it be nice to look forward to having some of that deliciousness tomorrow, too? Save some!" It really helps- and as an unexpected side effect, saves me tons of money on food! Good luck! |
Hi, I'm over 50 too, 61 to be exact. I post on the Golden Girls. I still think young and people say I look much younger than my years. BUT, once you get past 50 ladies, you just don't lose as quickly as you did when you were younger. Just a fact. And i like to communicate with people that understand that. It may take us longer, but it's totally doable.
Any one that is interested, please come over and join us. It's more fun when you have someone that understand that a 1/2 pound loss is a reason to celebrate! |
I've found that "too late" is one of those things I tell myself to beat myself up. Oh no! It's too late! You'll always be fat! You're so old! Why try!
I love Martha Beck's books and she wrote about how those types of thoughts that hold us back. She calls that voice the "dragon." She talks about a lady who bought a little dragon brooch. When this lady has these distressing thoughts she remembers it is just the "dragon" and she nicely tells it "thanks for sharing. I'll take it from here". I just love that metaphor for the way we sabotage ourselves - and the way we can stop it. 3FC is the best place I've ever found for diet support - that includes "in person" help! Good luck - you can do it! |
I know things vary for women at different stages of their life but I think that some of the factors like skin elasticity could be compensated for, even so.
Exercise and maybe even frequent moisturizing with something rich like cocoa butter might mitigate this. I have a friend who said that using cocoa butter helped her with not getting any stretch marks on her belly when pregnant. I think if it helped with that, couldn't hurt to try it during dieting. Just a thought. It's never too late in any case! |
Its not too late, even now also u can take the benefit of this,u ll find here also a lot of support.
Best of luck. |
