New to site, need to lose weight for transplant.

Hi,
My name is Jackie. I am a 58 year old "fat chick" who needs to lose 90 lbs.

I was diagnosed with cirrhosis due to medical hep because of meds.

I am very limited in what I can do. I am up and down all of the time, Some due to fluid retention and soometimes I just have to have a piece of pizza.

I have been looking at the site and believe it could help me as I have to go through this.

I look forward to hearing from some of you willing to support a scared lady.

Welcome and good luck ! Do you have a diet plan ? There are many to choose from. I find calorie counting works best for me. Others may prefer Weight Watchers, or South Beach and others might prefer Atkins . There are other plans as well. Look around on the forums and see what looks like it might work for you.

Jackie

Check out liverdoctor.com, Dr. Sandra Cabot's website. Her eating plan is fantastic for anyone but great for a liver patient. It is a whole foods diet. Staying away from that stuff we all know is bad for us. White flour, sugar, etc.

Jackie, I have specific medical advice for you

Jackie,
I am so sorry that you have medication induced liver failure.
If you are sick enough that you need a liver transplant, then you have extremely specialized food needs. Your liver filters all the toxins in your blood, including food by-products. Usually there is a protein imbalance with liver failure related to albumin- specific factors. You may also have clotting abnormalities in your blood which can be affected by food. I believe you do have a protein imbalance from your statement about the fluid retention. This is one of the most common things we see in liver failure patients when protein and albumin levels are abnormal, fluid is retained in the tissues.

Since you must be under a doctor's care (hopefully you have a hepatologist) to know you need a liver transplant, then that doctor and that doctor alone should be the one guiding your food choices and ability to diet to a lesser weight safely and healthy. If he cannot, ask for a referral to a nutritionist who can look at all of your lab work and make a food plan for you.

You are not in a state of health, you are in a state of illness. I hope very much that you go to the professionals your insurance pays to help you for help with the weight loss as well.
Come here for support, sure. But please, let your doctor and a nutritionist tell you what to eat, how much, how many meals per day, etc. This is extremely serious.

I am a Registered Nurse and I state these things with over 25 years' experience in critical care nursing.
God bless you and keep you and like I said, come here for support and encouragement once you have your doctor's food plan for you. All of us need support and encouragement, but in your case, you need more guidance with your eating than any of us can provide over the Internet. I know this is true.

My best,
Mandy

Wow, look at all the great advice you have already.

I echo what has been said - come here for support and companionship and to vent if needed. See health care professionals for specific diet information :)

I hope you will post often! This site is the BEST for support on your journey!

Thank you so much for wonderful advice.

I don't do anything that I do not run by my doc. I have an specialist for my liver also a tranplant doc that I see 2x a year. The other doc I see once a month.

Nothing goes into my mouth that isn't approved by my doctors. I certainly do not want any more problems to show up.

Again, thank you for the advice.

I will be back to check in. I look forward to joining you for your support.
