Red face I am new and could really use your help!!!!

I am new to this forum but not new to fighting weight. I am at my whits end and need to change. I have tried for years. My husband even encouraged me to quit work so I could work on my health. That was in August and I have only lost 5 pounds. I do go to the gym now and walk on the treadmill for 3 miles and do the elyptical for 20 minutes and then a little weight training. But...I keep saboutaging myself. Hiding candy around the house. Eating late at night. I have no control. So I will faithfully read these forums and take all advice and get motivated. I am going on 50 and want to enjoy my golden years to come. HELP! And thanks in advance!!

You've come to the right place for support, advice, & motivation!!

There are several forums for different catagories around here, so take a look & settle into a couple of them! The 100lb club & 50+ are just 2 that I can think of off the top of my head that you might be interested in! There are also several forums for different weight loss plans, depending on which one you're doing!

Good luck!

The only advice I can give is to get those trigger foods out of the house, and don't buy any more. If dh wants them, ask him to have them somewhere else and not bring them home. Looking at calorie counts was what kept me from buying stuff like that in the beginning. Now, I don't miss it, but at first you need some way of stopping yourself from buying more.

Also, come up with a plan for night time. I have a snack I save for the late night or middle of the night munchies: Yoplait 100 cal fat free yogurts. Some taste better than others, but the basics are all good: blueberry, strawberry, peach. That's my new "ice cream", so I save it for when I know I'm going to be weak and munchy. Since it's already planned into my daily food, too, I'm still on plan if I get up at 3 am and have a yogurt! You need something like that, plan for it, save it, then you can have it and not feel bad about it. A good dose of protein at every meal helps me, too...fills me up and keeps me full for a long time, so I'm not even hungry when it's time to eat again (I eat 5 times a day plus my yogurt snack some nights).

Anyway, I'm going on too long, sorry. You'll find plenty of support here. Just cruise the forums, do some reading, and jump in any place you feel comfortable. You're doing great with exercise, it sounds like, so just focus on making small positive changes in your eating plan, and you'll get there. It took me a few months to really get to "clean" eating, but I just tried to do one or two things a little better than before, and when I got used to that, I did something else, and gradually I got used to a new way of eating. It doesn't have to happen all in one day. If you don't give up, you cannot fail.

Thank you so much for wonderful ideas and insights! It feels good to know I am not alone! Though I am bungling with this web site. I tried to make a ticker and wound up posting my original message again somehow. Help! How do I make a ticker and how do I get that second message deleted?

A good book that may help you is called The Diet Cure by Julia Ross, a program for food addicts like myself.

Best wishes to you!

Don't give up! The first couple of weeks are the hardest-but you're worth the effort! I agree with the posters above-get those treats out of the house! Don't let yourself buy more-it's just too tempting in those weak moments. I also agree that after you start eating healthy-those unhealthy foods do make a person feel sluggish and NASTY!

Also-if you falter-don't mentally abuse yourself. Forgive yourself and move on. Don't use a bad eating day as an excuse for a bad eating week.

Good luck!

Hi, buttercup! Wow, three miles on the treadmill and then 20 mins more on the elliptical machine? You must be in decent shape to do that, whatever size you are. I hate doing cardio, but it is so good for your health and to get your metabolism in good working order, so you are off to a great start.

The hiding food and guilt thing is a behavior common to addicts. Food can definitely be an addiction, and one that is very difficult to manage. But, like many others, I have also gotten it under control, and you can too! I don't mean to sound like a salesman, LOL, but I truly mean it that it is possible to change your habits, and it will get easier as you go.

Remember that when you "sneak" food, the only person you are cheating is yourself. Before you get that snack, imagine how you are going to feel ten minutes later after you have eaten it, or ten minutes later if you hadn't. If you skip it, you will still feel physically much the same, only without that food sitting in your tummy!

Also, if you do give in to a craving, don't think of it as sabotaging it, but as just prolonging your journey to a lower weight.

Dieting is like 90% in your head.

One thing I always want to say to everyone is: Food is not a moral issue! Don't let yourself feel guilt for eating. Take care of yourself for your health, emotionally as well as physically. Good luck!

Default Starting over until I get it right!

I also am back trying after a bit of a hiatus. Has anyone heard of the V-Trim program? I am starting next week, a behavior modification program along with a new membership at the Y. Just wondering if anyone has been involved. thanks!

Well I am ashamed to admit that after reading the site and getting excited I still ate pop tarts at two in the morning. It is hard to admit this, but I need to get it out and maybe it will be less easy to "hide" my behavior. Why do I feel so weak at those times. I am pretty good all day but late at night sucks. It is really an uncontrollable feeling. I never thought of it as an addiction before until I read that it was today. I am so thankful I can get this out to you all. My family would not understand at all as they are all in shape and have great self control.

Welcome to 3FC!!

Sounds like you have a supportive DH. That's great!

We have a 50 something forum and lots of other fourms based on age, eating plan, exercise, etc.

What are your plans? Lots of us have had some good results with calorie counting and we have a very active forum here. Stick around and post often!

Welcome to 3FC. A great place to be.

I just gotta jump in here. GET THE JUNK OUT OF YOUR HOUSE!!!! Pronto!. You can't eat it if it's not there. Period. Stop buying it. Just cut it out.

The first 2 weeks are difficult, stick to it anyway that you can. And you CAN. Self control will never, ever fall into your lap. You must go out there and GRAB it. It's there. Trust me, I know. I was the worlds' worst eater. Thought that I was simply not capbable of controlling myself. That was false. You need to TAKE that control. Take it. Reach for it. It's there.

But yes, set yourself up for success by ridding your home of the junk. Just make sure to ADD in good, healthy low calorie foods. Make a plan, decide what you will eat for a few days in advance. Go shopping. Get excited. Get cracking. You CAN transform your life. Do it now. Don't waste another precious second.

I look forward to hearing of your success!! All the best.
