Default Howdy

I am brand new to 3FC, just stumbled across it yesterday. Like most here, I suspect, this has been a long and trying game for me...lose some weight, put it back on.

In the late 80's I joined Weight Watchers and was successful with it. I got to goal weight, losing about 50 lbs. Kept it off for a number of years, then gained a bunch all at once and it crept back on again. The 50 returned and brought its friends and relatives with it.

I rejoined WW a few years back. My insurance company was trying something new--join WW, get to goal weight, and they would pay $10 a pound! I started out really well, lost close to 50 lbs. Then life intervened.

My husband was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in March of 2005. We fought a long and hard battle, which ultimately ended with his death in Feb of 2007.

My eating went by the wayside, exercise went by the wayside. The last two years so much of my energy has gone to grieving and surviving my loss, that I have had little energy for anything else. And everyone here, I am certain, knows how much energy, mental and physical, it takes to sustain a concerted effort to lose weight and get healthy.

I am finally coming out of the depths of my angst, and trying to get my head back around getting healthy.

I have recently had a health scare--I had knee surgery to reconstruct a detatched ACL and to remove a shredded meniscus. Nine days after surgery, I ceased to breathe. I was rushed to the ER, and it was discovered that I had a massive pulmonary emoblism, a saddle embolus blocking my pulmonary artery and extending into both lungs.

After spending three days in ICU, I was released, but have been on blood thinners for the last three months. I have special dietary concerns because of the coumadin--basically, if it is green and leafy and HEALTHY, it causes the blood to clot. I need to limit what I eat of the things that cause the blood to clot too much. I am hoping I can SOON get off the blood thinner so I can resume a healthier diet. And, incidentally, to cease the weekly finger pokes to check my blood!

What I really need is someone to travel to Montana and kick my butt into action...sigh. My motivation seems to be completely missing.

So, about me. I am 43, I live in Montana, I am a librarian working with teenagers in one of the few cities in Montana. I actually live about 25 miles from work, in the mountains. I live alone--my daughter is grown now, 21 and on her own. My only companions are my Great Dane, my two cats, my daughter's horses (well, two horses ,and my miniature horse), and four house rabbits (Sorely neglected since my husband's death).

I like to read (occupational hazard), sew, quilt, cook, bake, and garden. REcently I have developed an interest in strength training. I am dating a guy who is a powerlifter/strongman and he has his own gym in his garage, with every bit of equipment imaginable. Only thing is, he lives 80 miles from me. He just joined a contest for body transformation, plans to lose 50 lbs of fat or more, gain muscle.

Since he is going to be trying to eat clean, I suppose this is as good a time as any. I have contemplated rejoining WW, but hate to fork over that much money. $$ is tight what with paying for my husband's medical bills, my own, and losing his income. No life insurance, sadly. Everyone always assumes we widows struck it rich after our husbands' deaths.....

Looking forward to getting to know you all, and finding some equilibrium.

Loquacious,

Thanks for telling your story. You'll find other members here are very supportive. You don't have to join WW but if you feel it is the best plan for you and will help you stay on track - it may just be worth it. I've heard they've revamped the way they do things, there is a WW forum in which you can ask other WW members about how the new plans work and if it would fit you. I am sorry about your loss, that is very tragic. How long ago was your PE? Maybe your doctor can switch you to a different blood thinner now that you are stable, like aspirin. With that you'd be able to return back to eating green leafies. PE's are common when one is immobilized after surgeries, but they can be dangerous. Hope to hear from you soon

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's passing.

I hope you find a supportive home among these boards. There are the 40-somethings if you'd like to chat with men & women around your age. There are groups based on how much needs to be lost, there are sections under Diet Central depending on what program you'd like to use.

There's a lot around. And we all want to help eachother make it to goal, and then stay at goal. There's even a maintainers area to help out with the "forever at goal" part of the journey

Please, post where you're comfortable. And share your journey with us!

Best of success!

Thanks so much for the welcome! I had my PE about three months ago. On the 19th it will be three months. It was touch and go for a time, and I scared my boyfriend half to death when I stopped breathing in his truck!

I can have leafy greens, but then I have to adjust the coumadin! The best thing to do is keep the diet consistent, but sometimes I really crave something like a big ol' salad, and then the INR tattles on me.

Thanks for your condolences. You do not expect to be a widow in your 40's, but it is shockingly common when you actually join that community.....I am coping as well as can be expected. At least, with Tim's long illness, I had time to get used to the idea in some respects. I feel so badly for those who lose their husbands or wives suddenly to accidents and such.

I will poke around and jump in where it seems appropriate!

Welcome Linette!

My condolences on the loss of your husband. I'm so glad you came through your medical issues. Coumadin can be a challenge with leafy greens, as you know.

We have some librarians on the board! WaterRat posts in maintainers and weightlifting---so come on down and check it out.

I love weight lifting and I'm so excited for you that you are interested in it as well. Please do check in with us down in weightlifting. We'd love to have you!!

I'm glad you're here!
