Hi. I'm new =)
Hi everyone. I'm 19.
I have a bit of a dilemma. I love working out. I have a lot of equipment and enjoy using it all. I don't workout to lose weight, I work out because it keeps me from just sitting around doing nothing. My problem is that I have a lot of trouble with unwanted attention. I'm 220 lbs and have been around that for the last few years since my grandma died. Ever since I was 12 I've had trouble with men following me when I'm out in public, finding me online and bugging me and talking inappropriately, and have been stalked by several strangers and ex boyfriends. Everytime a new "stalker" arises, I lose my desire to workout and eat more. I'm completely comfortable with my size and obviously men don't object or I wouldn't have this trouble, lol. But I'm wondering if anyone else has a problem similar to this? I hate that I give up what I like to do because I don't like the attention I get. I worry that it'll only get worse if I continue to workout. I don't look my size and have no trouble losing weight because I become addicted to working out and typically workout for 30-60 minutes every single day. Thanks for any input. |

Don't give others the power to keep you from doing what you want or need for yourself. You know....as rotten and unfair as it sounds, jerks are basically gonna be jerks no matter what. One thing that ironically turned out to be both an advantage and disadvantage for me was that I had a pretty strict, "have to be a good girl" upbringing. On the one hand, that made me somewhat naive but, on the other, it made me focus on doing the right thing, using my head. I didn't go anywhere with these guys, didn't let them take me anywhere, wasn't alone with them. The best advice I can offer is don't be afraid, but be cautious. Don't let them control your actions when it comes to doing something positive for yourself but, at the same time, try to prepare yourself for the reality of the way some guys can be. If there's things you can do to minimize/prevent contact with these people, do it. Build up your confidence....figure out ways to handle unwanted attention. People like that usually want attention back...I find ignoring them usually works pretty well for me. And...consider also...your working out is making you stronger. The idea that you could be better physically prepared for unwanted attention should the situation escalate can be empowering. Let me tell you...I have an inflatable punching bag and when I hit that thing, I realize dang, if I punched someone like I punch that bag, I could really hurt them. :p Mind you, I'm not gonna hit every guy that looks at me the wrong way but if someone tries something, he's gonna be in for a surprise. :p Oh, btw....hi and welcome!!! :) |
Sorry to hear that you're going through this. There are creeps in the world, for sure! I used to get that a lot when I was under 35, because in our family it's common to look a lot younger than you are up to that point, so I think a lot of pervs figured I was a teenager, even when I was well into my 20s. Thankfully, I look my age now, and honestly, I'll take the gray hair and the wrinkles over that kind of attention!
You need either a protection-trained dog, or a big dog that will at least stand there and bark or look mean or something. Even though I don't have that problem anymore, I still don't go anywhere without my dog. I have a new dog now, but my old dog saved me from many an uncomfortable situation, and I was able to go out and live my life and feel safe. If not that, then I'd suggest a big boyfriend, or taking some self defense training, so you can feel confident in telling these jerks where to...er..go, lol! |
haha
i have 5 cats. can't get a dog =( i carry pepper spray, and used to carry a 2 in pocket knife but i had to press charges against an ex for threatening to slash my tires and was told i couldn't carry it. i ignore the guys but it just doesn't sink in. people are stupid. i've always looked older so even when i was 11 and 12 i had unwanted attention from guys in their late 20s early 30s. i had a peeping tom over the sumer, and the last time it snowed we found new foot prints outside my window, so someone else is at it. it drives me crazy! |
