I've been 12 weeks on the Ideal Protein Diet with fabulous results. In the past 3 months I've lost 31 lbs. and on the whole feel great with no real hunger issues. However, in week 10 I developed a rash on my arms, waistline and inner thigh areas. I immediately went to my primary physician who was baffled. At first she thought it was poison oak and prescribed steroid cream and suggested I take Benadryl. No help at all. I used chamomile lotion and that cooled the itching down but I kept getting more and more bumps.
I finally did extensive Internet search and discovered several things. First, that this rash was most likely Hives. It has been seen quite often in people using Ketosis driven diets such as Atkins and IP. Dermatologists will say that it is a condition called Prurigo Pigmentosa and that it is a rare occurrence as a skin condition, usually Japanese, but it has been noted by many, many Western people who had been on Atkins diet as a regular occurrence . It was explained that Ketosis kills Candida in the body. This is called Candida die- off. The waste that has been trapped in the fat cells that are being killed off circulates in the blood system resulting in the Hives. No topical ointment will clear this up. What has been proven to be effective is antibiotics from the Tetracycline family, such as Minocycline. I found that info when I googled ketosis and Prurigo Pigmentosa.
So I went back to my dermatologist and begged for the Minocycline which he gave me and I am starting a 7 day regime. I will keep this thread posted about any or no improvement. I am not allergic to any antibiotic and so will be giving this a try.
