Way to go, Mimi! XD

No 5K's here until September now - weather is not conducive to safe running. I'll be doing the C25K refresher course nearer the time and, hopefully, the arthritis of the neck and spine will have settled down now that I'm back in the heat and not creaking and hurting with the cold. |
Certainly appreciate your support, Sharkie and Amanda, but all I've really done so far is registered -- haha -- still not at all sure I will be able to run the whole way! Amanda, I read about your arthritis pains in another thread -- wow. Glad you had a great trip but are back home now and can hopefully heal quickly. I know how much you value your exercising.

Registering is a huge step, though, Mimi. You'd be surprised how many people never even get that far.
It doesn't matter if you don't run the whole way - I didn't, and I still came in with a decent time. The point is getting over that finish line - no matter if you run or have to crawl. It will make a whole world of difference to how you feel about calling yourself a runner. It isn't how MUCH you run, or how far, but the fact that you actually do it. :) As someone told me - start at the back of the pack and don't get sucked into the craziness at the gun, when people race off like they are being chased. That way lies exhaustion before you hit the 1 mile mark. Take it steady and focus on breathing and enjoying the scenery around you. You'll soon begin passing the people who took off too fast (and that's a great feeling LOL). Make sure to take the water offered at least every half mile otherwise you risk cramps and dehydration and those both make you feel dreadful and like quitting. Other than that, just enjoy yourself. There will be tons of people cheering you on, regardless of the fact that they don't know you. It is really uplifting to see them on corners shouting "you can do it!" and "not much further now, keep going!". |
Signing up is a big step :) And I agree with Amanda about not worrying too much about not running the whole thing. But I'm not sure if I want to curse or hug the cheering crowd on the side :) I go back and forth lol
I've recently started a new exercise program to help tone and strengthen, but want to start up running again in the next two weeks. I just have to talk myself into getting up early in the mornings again! But I've got to start preparing for my 10k in the fall. I should look for a 5k for motivation. |
OK peeps I jumped on your C25K train.... I'll let you know how it goes....just started today.

Great timing, Amber! I just returned from a couple of weeks away and am so happy to see you here running! Had our 5K last week and -- though i certainly set no records -- i was so thrilled to do it and felt so accomplished afterward. I ran most (though not all) of the way and did it all pretty slowly. Completed in just over 33 mins, so about an 11-min mile average. I was just happy to have beaten my former time (which was 39 several years ago). I think my next goal will be to beat 30. The best part about the whole experience was doing it with DS and having him be proud of me :) Am still riding that high all these days later!
Hello to all our other running pals out there! |

I registered for one 8 weeks from now, my Couch 2 5K says I can do it in 8 weeks and so does my chiropractor:) - he actually said he will run it with me! I think a few of my friends will come also. It’s Sat. Sept. 5th - a flat dirt trail and run/walk, so nothing to fear, I’ll just do the best I can. It’s a good starter run for me, I won’t worry about the time, I’ll just finish, but I like how you compete against your last best time, that’s a good goal. My legs are already sore and I realized that I haven’t done real full on cardio in well over a year (as I didn’t do that during P1) so my lungs were happy today! My back seized just a little but my chiropractor said it will work itself out and not to worry. He helped me through my car accident and all of P1 and knows my body well so I trust him. He said this is a really perfect next step and will really help my body…. so yay! |

You have inspired me to get back on my bike!

Did my third run for the week yesterday, was at high altitude so harder, but still finished:)

Did my fourth run last week but then two days later pulled a calf muscle jumping around at a dance party:)
My physical therapist says hold on running for a week, but “I’ll be back”:)…. next week! |
You won't have lost anything in a week or two out. I found that after six weeks of not running I was still able to run it easily. The body doesn't forget as quickly as you'd think.
Planning on getting back to running once I get the all clear on health. :) |

I used to run cross country - at least an hour a day - until my early 30s and my knees and back started getting upset. Now with the extra weight gone and just going the intervals my body seems to be doing OK… except for this week I have this sentiment lol: |
I need that shirt.
My favorite shirt to run in says "Run Less Party More" I spent weeks in Week 6, got super busy for a few weeks, and now I'm back at the gym. I restarted at Week 1 running at my goal speed, so here's hoping I can build it up so eventually I'll be running all 30 minutes at 6 miles/minute. :) |
Sharkie!!!!!!!
I pulled a calf muscle so had to stop after a week and a half - I can start again next week some time. I’ll probably try to start again at week 2 …. I have a 5K in 4 weeks so I might need to walk some of it but I’m fine with that. I’m just glad I set the goal. |
Subscribing to this thread.
I'm not running, yet, but I know that once the challenge of weight loss ends, I will need another competitive goal to keep me on track. I used to run 5 and 10Ks, but began having repetitive stress fractures. Hoping that with my weight down and better nutrition, I can avoid that problem this time around. I'm currently walking 5 miles/day, 2-3 miles at a time (usually walking twice a day). Once the weather cools down, and my weight gets closer to goal, I want to start the C25K program. Maybe find a 5K to run in November? |

bumping - there are a couple of us training for various things right now - can hurt to compare notes here :)
We'll see if it lasts :D |
I am loving this thread. I began a Cto5k program 3 months ago. My history of running is nil. Always hated it. I would walk the cross country dreaded runs at school. I have no stamina and would get winded after 60 seconds. So I began the running program and on alternate days would walk hills in my neighborhood. I was using the NHS Couch to 5k program app on my ipod. Well I have to tell you, I went from hating hating hating running to absolutely loving it! I got as far as doing the two 10 minute run segments non-stop and felt very accomplished for doing that. But the best part? I felt amazing! I've done plenty of other cardio in the past: step aerobics, Zumba etc, but NOTHING gave me the endorphin high of running! My energy returned, my mood lifted, I slept better and ...... my libido returned! (I am 49 and perimenapausal). I began to buy form fitting comfortable running capris and tank tops because they are more comfortable to run in and for the first time I did not care how my fat 217 pound body looked in them because I was running!
BUT: I was not losing ANY weight and my knees were suffering. The hill walking contributed to the knee pain too. So - I am back on IP to lose weight so I can get back to my running and will run a 5k (my first!) in the Spring or early Summer. Right now I need to focus on my weight, and adjust my eating to improve my whole health. I don't have the energy to run right now. I may try again after the new year, with some more weight off me, along with an extra packet and see how that goes. My knees were telling me to lose some pounds so I have to. I am (was) using a mid foot strike and I can attest it is easier on your knees so I highly recommend that method to others. So I love this thread. It gives me a lot of motivation. I WILL get back and complete the program! And I will shout it out loud and clear when I complete my first 5k! BECAUSE I LOVE RUNNING!!!! Thanks for listening :D |
Yaaay, Tuscany! I wish I could run again, but it just hurts too much right from the get go now. I run for 40-60 minutes in the deep water at the pool instead. Gets me winded and sweaty (although that's hard to tell) and it's a good power workout. I do miss the scenery though.

I ran my first 5k in the fall and have run four more since. I love it!!! I have never liked running, so this is new to me. I want to start training for a half marathon this year.
|
I completed C25K, ran three 5Ks in the fall (won my age group in all 3!), and am currently using a training plan to get ready for a half marathon in early April. I'm signed up for a 10K in January, and am considering a second one and a possible 15K in February.
I LOVE running. :D |
Funny there seem to be quite a few of us doing this :)
Like HIS & kelly, my DH & I did a 5K Turkey Trot (he did the 10K) - I went out, still in P3, after 3 or 4 training runs, and placed 3rd in my age group (I'm 39) & 18th overall! We are now training for a 10 miler on Valentine's, a 1/2 marathon March 12, and we were selected in the lottery to run the Cherry Blossom 10 miler April 3. Definitely caught the running bug! |
Bump, because spring is here, and maybe more people will give it a go.... :)
|
Thanks!! I'm working (albeit slowly) towards getting through it :)
|
Bumping again for all the new IP'ers who would like to exercise (for their sanity, if nothing else)
