Slip....Stay safe! Ice is awful. I'll take snow any day over ice!

Liana.....Hopefully you are completely refreshed from your vacay. I love your pic!

Sahara.....I would just skip the P1 day altogether since you don't need to worry about glycogen stores as you are already a day out. But I wanted to point out something you mentioned about wanting to KEEP the weight you gained on your free day. If I remember correctly, it takes 3500 calories EXTRA to gain one pound of fat. You would have had to eat more than 3500 calories above and beyond your resting metabolic rate to even be up ONE pound from a fun day. So, most of those up pounds you are seeing are either the actual meal still in you, water retention, etc.

DarthKitten...welcome back! You sound like you are being really hard on yourself! If you've been doing a lot of yo-yo-ing with your calories or a lot of restricting, your body may be fighting you to keep any extra weight it has. Have you considered talking with a nutritionist, as I know you have a lot of dietary allergies which complicate things.

Not a great day here! Have a leak into the house due to ice dams Thankfully my contractor brother is going to climb up on the roof tomorrow and knock off some of the snow.

Then, I am possibly part of the Anthem hack. Advice was to do my taxes ASAP, so I used Turbotax (have been a customer for over ten years). Filing the return would not go through but- they charged my credit card 5 times Called support and waited on hold for 2.5 hours!!! They did get it filed and comped their fee, but I was so frustrated. Grr, snow days at home are supposed to be relaxing.

Darthkitten, I am up 2 pounds since the holidays. I am in my range but not where I was maintaining before the holidays. I am keeping it pretty clean and will do a Phase 1 again tomorrow. I have realized that it is a mind game and stressing about it and getting too restrictive was not working. As long as I am working the protocol, I am okay.

Evemomma thanks for your advice - I'll skip the P1. I'm such a rules based person - I think that's why IP worked for me, that I've been agonizing over this decision.

Chip & Shasta: I've notice some little wisps of hair growth at my hair line. I can't believe it. It would be great if the hair would come back. The girls, I'm not so sure. It's only been 6 weeks that I've been in Maintenance and while I don't think Iwas gaunt, I haven't really "fluffed up" any either. I've gained back 1.3 lbs since I started and I attribute that to the glycogen stores. I went to a top notch lingerie store here in Dallas and they fit me in a bra...that doesn't fit. There just isn't enough to fill the cup and the next size down all the extra skin doesn't fit. I'm going to give it 6 months for the skin issue to even out and see what happens.

Sahara: I modeled my Maint. and resetting my metabolism after eve momma and gradually upped my calories/carbs in small increments over time. Around 100 calories every couple of weeks. MFP is currently set at 1700 but I don't seem to be hitting that mark on a daily basis. I'm just not that hungry. I'm averaging about 1550 a day when I look at the weekly numbers. On the weight loss during maintenance and whether you should add a P1 day, you will get to know what your body is going to do with time. Generally the rule of thumb is do a P1 day after a fun day. But if you don't think you need it, don't do it. According to the IP videos, if you deplete your glycogen stores by doing a P1 day after a fun day, then there is less likelihood of the carbs that you ate finding the keys to get into the fat cells or something like that. So it's a chemical thing.

mars: If the losses are 70-80 lbs where skin can "shrink back" there may be hope for me yet. It's too soon right now. I'll reasses at 6 months and see where I'm at. Right now I am BATWOMAN with giant bat wings. But it's infinitely better than being fat.

murrcat: My head still hasn't caught up with my body. I am going to have to give that time to sink in as well.

Pishposh: Oh no! Sorry to hear you are in pain. Hope you feel better soon.

Slip: Thanks for asking. The ortho visit went about like I expected. He suspects I've irritated some ligaments and tendons, possibly a flare up of my tendonitis. I got 2 cortisone shots in my left knee, I have to take steroids for a week, then anti-inflammatory meds for a month, go to 2 physical therapy sessions to get the exercises down so I can do them at home and go back to see him in 3 weeks. No lower body strength training during all this time. I can still hike, but no climbing. If that doesn't help, then it will be time for an MRI. I have very little cartilage in my left knee so it's close to bone on bone. There will be a total knee replacement in the not too distant future. But I'll burn that bridge when I get to it. Having been down this road before I'm hopeful that this plan will work and I will just have to be super careful in what I choose to do for lower body workouts.

Hello Everyone,

Catlady--glad you are taking care of your knee, sorry you have all the trouble with it.

Slip--glad you have someone to deal with the ice dams. You definitely do not want to let that go too long, and would suggest you make sure the walls/ whatever is leaking gets dried out. Sometimes if the roof insulation is not extended all the way to the wall edge, this can exacerbate the issue.

Sahara, I've done a modified version of Eve's increase of calories--I started slightly increasing calories in P2, then more in P3, and was hitting about 1400 per day at the start of P4. Now at 1500 typically, sometimes more when I work in treats up to 1700 or so. Typically going for 70-100g net carbs per day, 70g min protein per day, remainder fat. I've felt good this way. Work is very busy, so I sit at a desk a lot, take walks and do yoga here and there. Been tracking in MFP for over two months. So, my three pounds is glycogen (it happened overnight), and I guess I just have to accept that and move on since I don't want to try to lose any more weight right now.

Everyone talking about loose skin--I definitely have some, mainly on tummy and at underarm. Hoping it will tighten up a little over time. The girls absolutely deflated...I'm hoping they will tighten up too...we'll see. Nordstrom has helped me fit bras well.

Happy Monday~!!!

Oh no Slip! Hope you can get that fixed ASAP!!!! I hate house repairs more than anything (well, most things). We would like to get our house on the market this spring/summer - but oh....the amount of work!

Sahara....I'm a HUGE rule follower! It also made P1 super easy for me...but scared the heck out of me on P4. Now I realize that I need to construct my OWN rules for maintenance because we are all so individual in how we and our bodies manage food/exercise. I have learned that keeping on top of MFP seems to be the key so far in managing my weight. I keep playing with my macro percentage and seem to do ok with a higher percentage of carbs than I would have thought possible.

Murrcat...You're doing great! You may find those up pounds will start to fall off as your metabolism keeps revving up. Several times in early maintanence, I had a big DOWN whoosh as my metabolism suprassed my caloric intake. Those were FUN!

Andrea.....I'm so sorry you're having a tough time with your knee. I hope the treatments work for you! I was looking at the daily menus thread and noticed you said you were having a hard time meeting your calories. I think you've said you are a lot like me with following guidelines. One thing I found with my need to keep my numbers EXACTLY in line with MFP was that I never wanted any of my macros to go over....so I would inevitably end up shorting myself calories. One way I have pushed this is to play with my macros and percentages. Right now, I have my carbs set at 40%, protein just at 25% and fat at 35% of my daily calories...BUT, what I intentionally aim to do is to always undercut my carbs and overshoot my protein. Egads....this is such a head game I know. RuthAnn would just say she just ignores her MFP, but I have a harder time "breaking the rules" if I feel it is in a negative way. But it is helping me actually HIT 1700 a day instead of ranging more like 1550-1650. I really want to be at the top of my limits calorically to keep my metabolism burning well!

Catlady thanks for that explanation of why we need to do P1 after fun day. I plan to do p1 after all future fun days. My not doing it was an over reaction to having lost a little extra weight and I'm still worried that I may have ruined how maintenance works by not following that rule! But like a Evemomma says we have to come up with our own rules that work for us in maintenance.

Slipfree - I'm stuck in the snow with you! I think we're somewhere in the range of 5-7 feet. It just won't stop. And you're right - I am stressing. It's hard to complain about a two pound gain, I think I'm just shocked it feels like so much more. I felt smooth and svelte before the holidays. Now I look lumpy in clothes (which still fit, at least - but I don't like to show off my muffin top).

PishPosh & Catlady - so sorry you ladies are in pain. I've struggled with a chronic pain issue off and on for years and it is no bueno. Cortisone shots are livesavers, though.

canadjineh - I'm glad to be back! I shouldn't have stopped checking in, but with school full time, work part time, and running a business part time, it's been busy. I also never feel like I have anything to add I do think sugars are a huge problem for me right now, and things I did in P1 previously are holding me up now (like using regular low-carb salad dressings, etc. because I can't handle WF products). Today I'm going to try and cut all the sugars I can and see what happens. And I have some news in the allergy arena; I think I may have a bromated flour allergy, not a gluten allergy. I was talking to a guy my mother works with last time I was in her office (they all know about my crazy allergies) and I was telling him how sometimes I'm fine with gluten items, and sometimes I'm really NOT fine. He mentioned that his sister in law thought for years she had a gluten allergy but it turned out she had a bromated flour allergy. So I did a little test - I found a thin, low-carb pizza crust that specifically listed UNbromated flour... and I ate it. And nothing happened! No epic sprint to the bathroom! So if this holds, it makes sense that I have reactions to some things and not others. But, I still would basically have to eat gluten free because out of all the labels I read, that pizza crust was the FIRST to specifically call out that the flour was unbromated, so I think especially in restaurants where they just won't know, it's easier to stick to GF free.

evemomma - I'm extremely hard on myself. But if I'm not, who will be? I have been yo-yo-ing with calories like crazy lately. I don't want to lose my hair again since it's just starting to grow back, and I don't want to shock my body, so I'm staying around 1200 right now (was 1560 in maintenance). But it seems nothing I do is helping and I just feel hungry all the time because I'm not into ketosis. I think I need to commit to P1 100% - by the time I phased off P1 I had adapted certain things and while I wasn't 100% I was still losing weight. But for the first 8 weeks I was in P1 I was 100% all the way. Maybe that's the only way to properly reset?

Happy Tuesday Maintainers!

Last night was rough. I had a really bad headache from the cortisone shots but today the pain is limited to the injection sites. And of course I was up exactly 1.5 lbs this morning. I'm NOT putting it on my ticker because it isn't real. It's from the shots and the steroids so I'll just have to ignore it every morning until it goes away.

evemomma Thanks for your MFP explanation but I'm not really sure I understand it. That's me, not you! I think I'll start incorporating more slow carbs into my meals and as snacks and see if I can get the calories up. I had it stuck in my head that I needed to keep net carbs at 100. That is a leftover from my Paleo days and it's the amount that is called the "sweet spot" for weight loss. While I wouldn't mind dropping a couple more lbs. I don't want to mess up my metabolism so soon after resetting it with the program. I am going to aim now for at least 150 net carbs and see what that does. Like RuthAnn, I do tend to ignore the settings in MFP except for the totals on Calories and carbs. My protein tends to fall anywhere between 90-120 grams so I think I'm doing ok there. And the fat just fills in the rest. I'm not scared of that.

Slip: Did you get your roof taken care of? Home repairs. Ugh. Now that I am an apt. dweller, I sure don't miss those. Sorry you got stuck in that hacker thing for Anthem. I heard that was over 85 thousand people.

darth: I'm hard on myself too. In all areas of my life, work, home, friends. I need to learn to lighten up a little bit. Glad to hear you figured out the bromated flour thing. I feel very fortunate that I don't have too many allergies, just the usual hayfever type stuff in the spring.

I did my taxes over the weekend and I am getting back enough that I will be able to buy a bike. I'm very excited about this. It's the one thing that I know that my Ortho will approve of for exercise. I'm also going to look into yoga but there are a lot of positions that involve kneeling and that will be a no no.

Hello to everybody else. Hope you are all having a fabulous day!

Andrea, hope you start feeling better soon. Yay for a new bike!

And thanks all for the well wishes. Liana, yes my night guard is new and it's a lab one, as opposed to an in-office created one, so it's a lot thicker. The dentist gave me muscle relaxers and a referral to a TMJ specialist. Can't get in to see them until April and they don't take my insurance, so...weighing whether to keep the appointment or not. I'll have to shop around I guess and see if I can find any others that do take my insurance.

Hope everyone who is snow bound is able to dig out ok. Spring needs to get here quick!

Hi all,

My super brother took care of the snow on the roof and the ice dams are beginning to melt. Believe it or not, it is expected to snow two more times before the end of the week.

Darth, we New Englanders are pretty use to snow, but enough is enough! I am a teacher and we are going to be in school until the end of June at this rate. And...no air conditioning and only 4 tiny windows that open. As for the two pounds, I feel lumpy too. As you can see from my past comments, I am amazed by how irritated I am by the numbers on the scale right now. Those few pounds bug me! But maybe I can use this experience to learn and reflect, rather than becoming complacent about maintenance.

Andrea, I am glad that you are looking into exercise opportunities that fit your dr's protocol. I am sorry to hear that you will need to have surgery in the future. My dad had both knees replaced two years ago. Tough recovery, but he wishes that he had done it sooner.

Pishposh, happy that your dentist provided some pain relief for you.

Murrcat- thanks for your helpful info. about the ice dams. I have always dealt with them before on my own, but this one was on the highest point of the roof at the front of the house. I am a contractor's daughter, but I am only allowed to call the Calvary when I can not handle it myself. I rang the alarm last night and they arrived this morning bright and early.

Hawaii, hope you are doing well with your snow.

I have snow in my attic at the moment. Nothing like stains on the ceiling when you are about to list your house. Roofer comes tmo. Hopefully it won't be too bad and we can get the ceiling painted.

I'm feeling quite light with all the decluttering in the house and getting back to my maintenance sweet spot. Cravings have been bad the last couple days and I think it is my body telling me that it doesn't enjoy staying in P1 and being so restricted. Feeling hopeful that I can understand and handle the balance this time around.

Chip, such a bummer about the roof and the snow Hope that it is a simple fix. Love that you are staying strong and feeling lighter. Finding a balance is the key to our success. Hoping for some of Eve's food peace as we fight the cravings.

catlady Hope you are already feeling the good effects of those shots! And good for you not to worry about the scale, though I know it can be a little unsettling. Yay for the bicycle--what a wonderful reward! Do you know which one you are going to get?

pishposh, hope you are soon feeling better.

Sending us all good wishes for skin shrinkage and filling in all the right places!

Hello friends,

I have missed a lot. A friend from Florida has been staying with us since Sunday and will actually stay in the house for a couple days after we leave for Florida. No time to post.
Slip & Chip - that's horrible about the leak.
Slip - not sure if I fully understood your post but did your credit info get hacked???
Andrea - that's too bad about your knee. I hope you find some relief with the shots and the PT. Glad you can still hike as you love that.

I'm a little over my scream, hoping it is the prendisone which is all done now but it may be the extra snacking. Doing P1 today and tomorrow before I leave and will do a reset day in Florida for sure. Will try to do strict P3 while away. Looking forward to some sun.

DH got news yesterday that his job will end in May or june, sooner than we thought. He is now talking to a recruiter about a job in Texas. Yikes! He has applied to a lot here but there seems to be nothing. Not sure what will happen but I guess if needed we will have to live apart for a while. Hoping something else works out.
