Actually grain carbs are allowed on the Alternative Plan Phases, but only one a day. I can eat buckwheat & rice, but can't see either of them puffing up properly for puri since they have no stretchy gluten, lol. Good for other breads like naan or chapatti, though.
You could use ghee instead of EVOoil if necessary although remember your portions; spices are no problem of course as long as there are no added sugars to them, but I can't think of any that would have sugar, off hand. No Indian desserts of course, lol. Nothing low carb about them!! I've used the broccoli cheddar soup packet for a tortilla/chapatti sort of 'bread' but it was hardly worth it for me. I can see packet hacking if you are on this for more than 6 months, but for me I only missed all my rice and beans/legumes. For the amount of weight I had to lose and the fact that I ended up doing the Alternative Plan (diabetic style) I could wait til maintenance with only one serving of starch carbs a day, really. Took me about 3 1/2 months so no biggie. Once you are on P3 pretty well anything goes for breakfast as you need some carb, some fat, and some protein. Actually as I wrote in to the IP Video email site (& they agreed), you could have pizza for breakfast anytime and not have to save it for your Funday in maintenance. That would go for your favorite Indian style dinners - having it for breakfast instead but again not including a dessert (unless you have a tiny dab of kulfi). Liana |
Here's the 'rules' for Alternative Plan...
** IMPORTANT: Choose one item from a different “Group” at each meal. You must consume 1 choice from each 3 Groups per day. You may not substitute one group to choose an additional food from another group. ** GROUP 1: 2 slices of toast (whole grain, pumpernickel, rye, multigrain sourdough, stone ground whole wheat, oat bran, sprouted grain), 150g whole-wheat pasta, 150g brown rice (non-instant), 1 sweet potato or small boiled potato, 60g oatmeal (non-instant), 150-200g couscous, 50g unsweetened cereal (bran, oat, whole grain, barley), 150g cooked legumes (chick peas, lentils, green peas, kidney beans), 150g corn GROUP 2: Fresh fruit (e.g. - 1 grapefruit, 1 apple, 2 kiwis, 150g pineapple, 1 banana, 200g strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries) **these are examples, you may choose other unsweetened fruit, in a normal portion size** GROUP 3: 1 sugar-free (no added, that is) yogurt, 1 6oz glass of milk (2% M.F. or less), 30g cheese (about 20% M.F.), 120g cottage cheese, 60g feta cheese This is in addition to your usual P1 veggie/meat/packet/vitamin/water/salt instructions :D |

I have used ghee for olive oil replacement. Just think about the spiced up cauliflower. Cooking onions and tomatoes down to a flavourful sauce for anything with the correct spices. The no-no's right now are the beans/legumes and the yogourt ingredients UNLESS you are on the Alternative P1 for diabetics. There's lots of yummy food out there yet. Even if it isn't a traditional dish, try using your favorite spice mixes with IP approved veggies. Zucchini will always work in almost anything as will cauliflower.
Just no chapatti, naan, bhajias, samosas - you know all the deep fried stuff and breads. Get creative and add to the recipes on the Daily Chat recipe link. I'm looking forward to checking some of them out. Liana |

Easy Crockpot Chicken Curry
Welcome chipper. I use my Indian spices with just about any vegetable imaginable -- use a little olive or grape seed oil to heat up cumin and mustard seeds, then add veggies and other ground spices as desired.
Also, a very easy crockpot chicken curry has become a weekly staple in our home. The first time I tried it, it was meant to be just for me, but the rest of my family wanted it too! Now I plan ahead and make enough for all of us :) I don't use any oil or tomatoes for it. Just toss all of the following in the crockpot at the same time and let cook: bite-sized chunks of chicken breast, small amount of chopped onion, diced red bell peppers, garlic, ginger, salt, and whatever other spices you want (curry powder, cumin, cayenne, garam masala, turmeric, etc.). Then splash some chicken broth over all that (I use about one cup for 1 lb. chicken, but obviously this can vary). Let cook (stir occasionally) and enjoy later topped with chopped cilantro and onions and with cauliflower "rice" or by itself! I consider this 100% OP, even though some onions are cooked in the curry (they don't caramelize, so I think that's OK). |

I am a 36 year old mom of two, from Andhra Pradesh ( though me and my husband love and cook all types of indian cuisines). Started IP from 25th December 2014. Going good, but do miss the raitas and pickles and upmas/dosas etc. Got some more masalas to usually crockpot the veggies with them or stir fry. Am a vegetarian, so cannot try any meat options but am using eggs or tofu for my evening protein. Very happy to see this thread, looking forward for some desi recipes that can go on the diet. On the note of common genetics in desi women , would appreciate any tips or advice to lose weight and not put it back on after the diet is done. |

I made saag tofu and saag chicken this week and they came out pretty good. I blended some (like 2 oz appprox) tofu while blending the spinach for adding some depth to sub for the malai/cream and then used up 4 oz of chicken to make up the rest of the protein requirement. Just make sure to add copius amounts of ginger, garlic , cilantro and tomato and you get a pretty decent IP compliant saag chicken/tofu. I also added some oyster mushrooms to the gravy as I needed to get my veg portion in and dint want to eat another salad- frankly it dint add much to the curry. Next time I would just make saag tofu and eat with cauliflower rice. Yum! Good luck on your journey. All that lovely dosas/rice/naan will be waiting for us on the other side when we are done with the program. We can do it!!!!!!!!! BTW, edamame is measured for Nutrition Facts in 1/2 c portions weighed as 74 grams. So 150g on your IP sheet would be a cup by weight. Other beans are heavier so probably less in your measuring cup.

I am back on IP and have managed to lose 10 pounds in 16 days. Pretty excited about it. I am Indian too and use indian spices to temper the oil before I toss my veggies in ... In 2014 I lost a total of 30 pounds and then regained it all and then some...using menopause as an excuse :D |

I want to get this thread more active for yummy food ideas. IP is so generally 'whte-bread Americana' and dull, dull, dull. I must admit I check out carb counts on ethnic veggies and use the lower carb ones instead of the usual. Stuff like nopales in Mexican food, and daikon radish or bitter melon in Asian food. Sounds like a yummy recipe, CookieShine, but if you are doing IP, no basmati rice. You could sub fried up cauliflower rice, or use the konjac (miracle) rice. I will admit, if you like good rices, konjac rice will just NOT cut it, it's more like the tiny Italian pasta orzo. A little too chewy in texture. I hope there's some more Indian folks doing IP that can add to this thread with yummy food ideas from their cultures.
