Coffe on IP

Hi All, I met with my soon to be IP Coach, I am starting next Thursday, and he had me do a health assessment / lifestyle questionnaire and he said I am going to have to cut down on coffee :( I usually drink 3 to 4 a day..How many coffee do you guys have daily? or what does your coach say about coffee? Just curious.. thanks, J

nolasmurf 08-14-2013 07:26 PM

Mine advised an extra water for every cup of coffee or tea. But he didn't limit me

berteau 08-14-2013 07:27 PM

I drink a cup or two in the morning (small, no Venti anything), but make sure to drink extra water. Good luck!

Breakofday71 08-14-2013 07:36 PM

For every up of caffeine you drink, you have to add an additional 8 oz of water on top of the minimum 64 oz you need to drink anyways.

I have one cup of coffee in the am, and then switch to hot water flavored with cinnamon or lemon to help get my water in.

I have seen a lot of people use decaf with good success.

I wish you luck with your journey :)

saskgirl 08-14-2013 07:42 PM

I have a cup in the morning and have switched to having a decaf at night because I have been sleeping soooo well since I started and don't want to ruin it!
My coach put coffee on the list for my breakfast and if I end up having more I just drink extra water.

Gemmstar 08-15-2013 12:20 AM

My coach said to mix up a vanilla drink mix and add a little to the coffee instead of milk or creamer. It was actually good and you only need a little bit :)

sonolady 08-15-2013 06:19 AM

I'm not a coffee person but drink 2 cups of tea each morning with skim and stevia, I mix my morning choc/spinach shake with half water and half coffee. I drink about 100 oz of water a day but I have always done that. For 3 weeks I only lost 2 lbs and the coach actually said maybe I am drinking too much water.?? I just sort of laughed and took the scale not moving as a stall. I think it pretty much was just a stall, I hadn't changed anything, no big cheats and down 2.6lb this week. So too much water? nah.... just a body adjustment

Dolemite 08-15-2013 06:28 AM

I have two small dixie cups of coffee with almond milk and half a splenda in the morning. In the afternoon I have a medium iced coffee from D&D again with almond milk and splenda. I do drink well over 100 oz of water every day.

I'm guessing you are not on IP?
Almond milk is not a phase 1 food

trishthayer 08-15-2013 07:53 AM

When I decided to lose weight I called a clinic to make an appointment and to ask 1 question, "do you limit the intake of coffee or tea?". I was NOT going on a diet and giving up caffeine at the same time, I wanted to stay married, lol! I was told at 2 different clinics that you did not limit coffee or tea as long as it was being drunk black and that you added extra water after the first cup. If you like and feel comfortable with the couch you should ask why this is a rule.

tiggermd 08-15-2013 10:18 AM

My coach told me to add extra water for each cup I drunk. I have found however my taste buds changing. I still take my 1-2 cups in the morning but I am finding herbal tea really nice in the afternoon and pm.

Nope I am on IP. I just find that a splash of almond milk, which my wife uses for her cereal and is always in the fridge, doesn't affect my routine.

I would think as you get closer to your goal...this may not work as well for you....have you thought about trying to wean off before you notice that happening? I think anyone who is working on losing a relatively small amount of weight..and ESP a female who is trying to get as low into the 100s as is healthy...would not be able to get away with adding something like this to the day for long...if at all.

Clarington45 08-15-2013 08:26 PM

Thanks for the responses everyone, I will ask him when I officially start IP next Thursday..

Annik 08-15-2013 08:54 PM

my coach says 1 cup a day.
if it is op to have more than 1 cup a day if one ensures more water intake, that makes me happy!

I do this occasionally as well- small deviations from "the approved" foods and it hasn't affected my losses yet either. A splash of almond milk...a few drops of agave nectar...etc etc. The quantities used are just so small to affect anything. My coach said today as long as we are under 35g of carbs per day we are good to go...and so far so good for me anyway!

You do know that agave nectar is sugar, right?

These small "deviations" will catch up eventually.

Oh definately. I have several deviations too that have made things easier for me to trudge through this diet for the past 8 months. The minute I see my weight loss drop from less than 2-4 lbs in a week they go out the window! So far so good this morning I hit the 110lb mark! :carrot:

Archer Farms Pumpkin Spice Coffee

Hi all! I also have a coffee question:

I LOVE pumpkin spice coffee and I saw it at Target yesterday. It didn't have nutritional info on the bag. It just said that it contained coffee, and "natural and/or artificial flavorings". There was not calorie info or anything on the bag. I looked it up online and it said that there were 5 calories per serving, but 0% for everything, including sugar so I'm not sure where those 5 calories are coming from. Do you think this is ok for Phase 1?:?:

trishthayer 08-16-2013 08:21 AM

Coffee, black coffee is 3 calories a cup and 0 for everything else. My coach is fine with flavored coffee that is brewed, like the pumpkin spice, 5 calories 0 for everything else. I drink 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day and most of them are flavored.

You are doing fantastic! The weight is coming off...and you seem to be "head in the game!"

For some of us it is important not to let the little things dictate getting off track. Lisa said she sticks to the veggies on the approved select list for the 4 C a day...and that is what I've done too. First off..it makes it easier not having to keep track of what else I ate during a 7 day time frame...and the out of bounds appearance of a green bean or tomato sliver or some other veggie from the occasional list is not a blip on my radar if happenstance throws one in front of me at a book group dinner or some other event! Although I've planned, small things don't always go according to MY plan, so removing that small worry was actually huge! Last winter before I started this I was drinking my coffee with flavored creamers on occasion or with half and half ...and switched back to black coffee. Now... when the winter returns...I'm going to have to find a 0/0/0 substitute for pumkin spice creamer.... Someone mentioned flavored coffee...(pumkin spice)...who makes that??...Must PLAN on learning to like that before October! Better get started...

Good luck to you as you continue to trend the right way:D:D!

Clarington45 08-16-2013 09:23 AM

I really can't imagine drinking black coffee... I can go without sweetner or sugar.. I see that some people use a bit of a vanilla protein shake or skim milk... so I might have to try that and wean myself off of it eventually.

THANK-YOU...!! On my way to the mall today and there is a Target there!

FrostyBobber 08-16-2013 08:26 PM

I consider coffee as part of my breakfast. I was a big creamer adder to my coffees before IP.. I went cold turkey and just add sweetner now. I tried adding a little of my 'breakfast' vanilla shake to my coffee and didn't like it. Not only could I barely taste it, but is was a wierd consistancy even though I premixed it.. maybe I should have tried just adding the powder..

I do however, live on my keruig flavored coffees... my latest addiction is the cinnamon roll from Timothy's... it is amazing even without creamer.

As for limiting coffee/caffiene.. my coach said I just hafta replace it with equal amounts of water in addition to the water required for the day...

Aydubs 08-18-2013 12:08 PM

AMAZING!!! (For fans of Starbucks)

I don't know if others know about this, but today I ordered a double shot of iced espresso in a venti cup, poured in my pre-made vanilla shake and OMG!!!! It was soooooo good!!!:carrot:

FrostyBobber 08-18-2013 03:57 PM

I am thinkin I am gonna hafta make a Startbucks run now! lol :carrot:

BLUEJEWEL 08-18-2013 05:05 PM

I am a huge coffee drinker, black is fine when on IP and the pumpkin spice from target is really good. I drink a lot of iced coffee as well, which adds quite a bit of water already. I need to drink more water that is for sure, but I felt my weight loss was consistent even though I enjoy coffee throughout the day. I keep a Trenti size (24 oz) container of water with me While i drink my coffee so I don't forget.

Lj14 08-18-2013 05:45 PM

No coffee would have (I think) been the only deal breaker. I've always told myself for every cup you must drink an additional glass of water. I've got the coffee thing down to a manageable 2 or 3 a day. I might even switch to decaf - but since this is only day 3 I think I will figure out a few other things first.

Art3mis 08-18-2013 06:00 PM

Coffee is really my only vice in the world...its the one thing i can't live without AND...its not horrible for you (as long as its in moderation)....i try and keep my intake to no more than 2 cups a day :D...i dont even need it sweet...just missing proper cream...but im learning...or shall i say my taste buds are :D

Clarington45 08-18-2013 06:46 PM

I feel the same way, I will try and stick with two and see how that goes, and drink extra water..

I agree, it's my only vice too, and would prefer not to give up a cup or two a day..

One of the things I have LOVED in the past once fall arrives is a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte. In a former life, coffee mate P-Spice creamer was pretty darn close... (And easy on the wallet)..... Dynamite on this diet tho! Never again!

Finally got some of that Archer Farms Pumpkin Spice ground coffee today that was mentioned, from Target... :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes :goodvibes:goodvibes:dancer::dancer:
lip smacking good usin EAS Cafe Carmel as creamer and a decent shake of cinnamon...
Prob nothing like Starbucks P-Spice...mmmmm...I can SURE live with this version tho' and can't really remember what the Starbucks was like anymore....! Probably would find it sickening sweet... Haven't had one now since Christmas. That's a good thing!

My previous famous quote...I want a little coffee to go with my cream! This has been rough!!! I came here looking for alternatives to half n half that would hopefully satisfy my cravings. I drink decaf and have for years due to fibrosis but I love the flavored creamers. Reading this thread I am encouraged to try flavored coffees. But if a substitute for half n half is out there I'm ready for it!

I was a half & half lover too. It was probably a bad habit to be in. I'm learning healthier choices now.
