No weight loss first week!

Has anyone else done IP and had their first WI and stayed the same? Scale moving SLOW this week too, not weighed in yet. Any ideas what could be happening? Did Zumba first week....stopped it this week....no difference!
Arrgghhhh. Frustrating when you hear of all the high weight losses each week! I have done Weight Watchers up to IP so I have been dieting.....but really, no good progress? I wasn't expecting that......
Suggestions?

angie123 06-14-2013 09:38 AM

what are you eating each day? do you measure yourself? have you lost any inches?

If you have been sticking to the program, then it is probably just water retention. Ideal protein works wonderfully, stick with it :)

Dismee 06-14-2013 09:44 AM

I am eating exactly what is on plan. Hubby is doing it with me and we eat exactly the same things. (He lost 6 lbs!) 3 packets of IP daily and 6 oz of meat and 2 cups veggies at supper and lunch......briefly. Coffee, occasionally with half and half..... but would that stop weight loss? I drink all the water....and have been VERY religious about the program, with the exception of coffee occasionally with h&h? A puzzle.......
Hubby thought zumba was the culprit but did not make a difference this week.
Don't feel like I am in ketosis.....

angie123 06-14-2013 09:47 AM

Dairy can definitely be the culprit. IP allows 1 oz of skim milk in coffee, or you can use some of the IP vanilla drink. Try cutting the half/half out this week and see if you lose weight/inches.

Ishbel 06-14-2013 09:49 AM

dairy has sugar in it, go black...follow it to a 't', be methodical about following the plan

yes you're allowed 1oz of skim milk but that always made me feel like my coffee just needed more creamer so I started drinking black with splenda to get my caffeine fix

The exercise could have stalled you the first week. Do you have a coach?

Dismee 06-14-2013 09:58 AM

Yes, I do have a coach and he was surprised. I reassured him I did not cheat knowingly! (I am sure you always wonder as a coach.) He suggested watching salt, modifying exercise (I decided to stop it for a week) and see how this week goes. I was also fighting a cold.....had taken Zicam, so he said a lot could be going on? Again....but NO WEIGHT LOSS? I was so disappointed based on what friends are losing.
Scale moved this week, but not for the last 3 days! ugh
I will figure this out..... I like the diet and food and want to reach my goal!!!
Thanks for the support......:)

if you keep doing what you're doing it has to happen...dont get discouraged, hang tough!!

Exercise should NOT be added until your body has adjusted to ketosis, and even then should really be kept to a level where you do not work up a sweat or breathe heavily. The IP diet is FAR too low in calories for your body to handle sweating out a few hundred of them, and on top of that muscle recovery causes water retention. Consider that in light of the fact that the big drop most people see the first week of IP is a lot of water, and you can see why exercise may have kept you from seeing any movement on the scale. My suggestions would be:

- stick to black coffee or only the 1oz skim milk in your coffee. Also make sure that for any caffeine you drink after the first cup, replace with an equal amount of water ON TOP of the water you are supposed to be drinking every day. It's easy to get dehydrated on this diet.

- Eliminate all exercise for at least the first 3 weeks. Don't take long walks, don't lift weights, definitely don't go to an exercise class. Let your body get into ketosis and adjust to it. At that point you can consider adding light exercise, but for now the most important thing is to give your body time to get into ketosis and start burning that fat.

- Don't compare yourself to your husband. Men (annoyingly) lose weight much faster than women. Your journey is your own, and will take its own course.

Good luck!

I agree with what the others have said. I completely left out the dairy and just used the vanilla IP shake to add to my coffee (also cut out caffeine completely...even now that I'm in maintenance I still don't have any caffeine). Just stick with it and the results will come. I know it's hard but try to be patient and don't compare yourself to others. It will happen.

Thank you so much for your enlightening words! Along those same lines, I did do some strenuous yard work this week, with very sore muscles following...again could be the water weight retention hampering any scale results. Makes such good sense! Will def give up the h&h and limit coffee.
I hope you are a coach at a center, as you are VERY knowledgeable and supportive! :D
Drinking all the water....... too.
thx

You may be following an old Phase 1 sheet. There have been changes in the ounces of meat and occasional vegetables. The latest has a Feb. 2013 date on the bottom. The first post in the Daily Chat has a link to the most recent sheets for all phases.

jodi73 06-15-2013 08:45 AM

The one thing that popped out when I was reading your post... when you listed what you are eating, did you mean you eat 6oz of meat and 2 c. of veggies at lunch and at dinner, or just 6 oz for the day and then 2c of veggies at lunch and dinner? I know every coach is different, but mine had said 6-8oz of protein total for the day...if you were eating it twice, that's extra fat/cal that could be hindering it.

I noticed this also just now, when I was reading this thread. This could definitely make a difference. Unless it was miss-typed.

Dismee 06-15-2013 08:53 AM

Thanks for your support everyone.....no I am only eating the 6 oz of protein at dinner along with the 2 cups of veggies at both. I have the new plan also, dated 2/13.
Scale is down this morning...... I am happy....convinced it is the HEAVY exercise that is the culprit during these initial weeks.
Can't "weight" for WI later today!
Again, thanks for all the information shared. It does help. :)

jodi73 06-15-2013 08:57 AM

Good luck...these boards have been my savior :) Tons of helpful information from people who have already been through it :)

What exactly is "muscle recovery"?

When your muscles recover from exertion.

Thanks, scorbett1103!

I have had a rather sedentary lifestyle (contributing to my weight problem, along with poor eating habits -- I am just now starting to appreciate vegetables) and have been following the "no strenuous exercise" IP guideline, just doing longish walks with a friend. Good to hear the "do not work up a sweat/do not get to breathing heavily" rule.

Last night, though, I had an unplanned workout -- I was in downtown Seattle with my sisters & their husbands and they decided to walk up the (many) stairs from the waterfront to the Pike Place Market. I just took it slow and stopped several times to rest. My thigh muscles felt weak & sort of like they were burning. We went to a wine bar where they sampled wine and I drank water. :) Any tips on what I could have done/how I could have handled the situation better? We had just eaten dinner, and I'd had an IP peanut bar while they were having dessert -- if I'd had an emergency IP snack along with me, should I have eaten it after climbing the stairs?

That's a bummer! I did have a big loss my first week, however I did no exercise at all, I was prohibited by my coach. Hope you have a better week.

Great job avoiding the wine! The muscle fatigue you experienced is probably because you are not normally active, so those muscles aren't used to working that much! I would always recommend keeping an emergency packet handy as you definitely could have used one after your walk/climb. I used to keep them in my purse, my car, and at work - you never know what life will throw at you!

Thanks for the info/tips, and for the congrats! :) I was pretty proud of myself because I watched the others have cocktails, wine, entrees I couldn't have, sides I couldn't have, and desserts, and it didn't bother/tempt me. On the plus side, I did have delicious halibut with steamed asparagus that was to die for... plus lemon slices in my ice water. ;)

I completely understand because I only lost 1 lb my first week on IP... it was very discouraging and such a let down. I was actually the LOWEST number for the first week weigh in that they had ever seen... lucky me! However, I seem to cycle... 1 pound 1 week, 3-4 pounds the next week, etc. It will happen... it simply isn't possible not to being on such a low calorie diet plan (at least that is what my coach always says). My coach says that I must not eat any less than 8oz of protein... funny how all coaches have different instructions while following the same IP plan. Good luck and hang in there!

spunky536 06-17-2013 02:09 PM

Yes... My DH has not lost anything his first week either. Talk about discouraging! We are doing it on our own and do not have coaches. But I know he is eating right. We will see I guess. I just have to keep encouraging him not to give up!!

Dismee 06-20-2013 10:29 AM

Second week.....better! 3 lbs down. But still no great big shakes like so many have. Coach suggested checking vitamins and mineral levels to see if there might be a deficiency? My life history of dieting has been SLOW. LOL

How does your hubby follow the program without a coach? Meaning how do you get him the food?

spunky536 06-20-2013 10:52 AM

We do alternatives. Mostly the EAS Advantedge Carb Control Shakes. As it turns out, he has lost some. Not as much as one would expect, but 9 lbs in 2 weeks. I guess he just had a slow start. He does have a lot of muscle so maybe that was it.

3 lbs lost is awesome! Congratulations! :carrot:

One thing I have learned since joining this forum -- DON'T compare yourself, and your amount of weekly loss, to other people -- every body is different, and will react to the diet somewhat differently. Some will lose fast and some will lose slower, but if you stick to the IP protocol you WILL lose.

My second week I lost what seemed to me a smallish amount based on what I'd heard (that women tend to lose 3-5 lbs per week), BUT I had a big loss in inches. That was a pleasant surprise. ;)
