Flying While on Phase 1

I have researched threads regarding traveling while on IP. I will be attending a conference in Long Beach, CA; and then vacationing there (staying at Disneyland's Paradise Pier Hotel, Catalina Island & etc) for a total of 7 days.

From what I've read on the traveling threads, I can take the IP packets in my carry on, any premixed should be put in Ziplocks :) and placed in my checked luggage. I'm fine with all of that.

What about the veggies? I'm really concerned that the conference won't have the restricted veggies that I need, in the past it has not. I think I'll be fine in the evenings getting to eat out at restaurants. Has anyone packed cut up veggies (cucumbers, celery) and taken them on a plane? If so, how did you pack them...ie checked bag or carryon? Am I just overthinking this?

While in CA I don't want to drag my family around to grocery stores...I'm not sure I'll have much time to go shopping those 1st few days while attending the conference. I've searched Disneyland eating posts & discovered that there's not a lot of healthy choices...kind of surprising since the place should promote healthy eating to our children!! If anyone has vacationed there with success, please let me know how you handled that as well.

I apologize for the long post..Thanks for any advice you can give!

I always pack a salad, small container of dressing, and sliced peppers and cukes for the plane. I usually have a restricted on the plane just to make life easy and then I put shakes in my checked bag. My last long trip was 9 days and I shipped RTD shakes to the hotel so I didn't have to deal with it in my luggage.

Most places will steam veggies for you, and I can usually get grilled steak or fish. Some restaurants are better than others, but Disney restaurants are generally accomodating.

I agree with Debra.

I did a lot of traveling on P1, including a good amount of flying. I was on IP products in P1. Last summer I had to pack for a 2 week trip. I put the RTDs in my checked suitcase and most of my packets and bars in my carry-on. I thought I would order more RTDs and have them sent to my destination, but never got it together to do that in advance.

In New York City, you need to take all of your daily items with you at the beginning of each day, so I would take an extra packet of pina colada and a bar. In several lunch restaurants I ordered a salad and vegetables and mixed my drink in my shaker. I requested an empty glass with ice and was set for lunch. THe bar was my snack, so it all worked well. Occasionally I ate my meat protein for lunch instead of dinner; sometimes I split the meat protein between the two meals and added another IP snack (pudding or another drink) to complete the day.

There were a few times that I packed a couple of RTDs in the bottom of my carry on and noone said anything. I did this if it was an especially long flight.

I found that restaurants usually comply with requests for "no butter" or "no cooked onions" and most places will serve grilled chicken or fish. Even a hamburger will do in a pinch. I was lucky in NYC and found a great health food restaurant that had a buffet with all of the ingredients listed. I was able to find many choices there. But generally, you can find grilled chicken, fish, or a 6 oz steak and steamed veggies that are delicious and filling.

Have fun on your trip!

The best part of staying strictly on IP when traveling: when you get home and the scale has gone down you feel like you have triumphed!!

Some things I have done.

Bring Walden Farms individual packets of salad dressing. You should be able to get a salad almost anywhere. Pack some small ziplocs and a small paring knife in your luggage. You can take veggies on the plane, use a small soft sided cooler. Plan the time to get to a grocery store when you get there and buy veggies even if it is via taxi. Use your paring knife and ziplocs with them. Ask a restaurant if you can buy raw veggies from them or get them to go off a salad bar (celery, broccoli,etc.).

I travel a lot while on P1. I almost always only have a carry on and have never had any problems with packets, bars and veg in my luggage. I even bring hard boil eggs. I was once asked by tsa why i had so many golf balls in my luggage and why they were green. Lol it was broccoli florets all cut up and portioned. I couldn't stop laughing. Have fun and don't worry, sounds like you have a plan and that's usually the secret to being successful!

Travel for me is constant..

....with or with out a way to use packets conveniently or easily I've managed to stay on plan. All the suggestions on this site that have worked for someone are worth trying. Importantly tho', there are a few "meals" which can be ordered when out that almost are never fail for me...We have no family in the vicinity... "IN THE VICINITY" means for us, a full day's drive to arrive at the closest family...and air travel for the rest.

Breakfast or lunch: Order a 3 egg white omlette with specific veggies...
Lunch or dinner:... Salad with grilled chicken or other animal protein. I ask for olive oil and a few lemon wedges to dress it with...most restaurants don't have cider or white vinegar. And adding a side of vegetables to top off lunch or dinner since most salads DO NOT come with enough veggies to meet the IP plan requirement.

My mother had a stroke in March and we have had to do a lot of travel these last weeks, but I have continued to lose weight ...even when needing to make adjustments. Keeping the protein requirement/meal and total calorie and carb guidelines in place...ordering egg whites or salads with protein did not impact my loss...... I will have been on IP for 4 months as of May 10...and have closed in on a 40 pound total loss...and for the record...I am an "older" woman...who expected to lose SLOWLY!!! Needless to say...I'm quite happy!!

Last week I was flying home out of O'hare...and security detected "powder" in my carry on and had to check it out. Of course it was the packets...There was no problem...other than it required a carry on search which I was fine with. The security has probably been cranked up at most of the major airports since the Boston situation and I suspect the start of summer travel will keep the due diligence at major airports kicked up a notch. This was the first time that happened....

Thanks for all of your responses!

I guess I will pack some sliced veggies in my carry on bag, and more in my checked bag! I'll let you know how it all turns out...:)

Target is right down the street from Disney, take a cab and then get some veggies to load the mini refrigerator up with.

Thanks for the tip!!! I'll most likely be calling the hotels for more info around those areas!
