What is the Modified IP for adolescents??
I see in the literature that there is an alternative protocol for type 1 diabetics and adolescents. Does anyone know specifically what that is?
My 14 yr old is thinking about doing it this summer with alternative products (I did IP- too expensive to go that route again so soon). I would like to make sure she isn't starving herself or not getting the right nutritional balance for her age. Thanks in advance......Pam. :) |

I read somewhere (now I can't find it, of course) that type 1 diabetics and adolescents get to add extra food... I think I read a carb, a fruit & a fat. But it didn't say what type of carb/fruit/fat or how much.....
With so many knowledgeable people on this forum, I thought I might get some info here.... :) |

My 14 year old has asked as well ... so thank you for the info. I figure summer will be the easiest time for her to do it when she doesn't have to go to school and all that. Unfortunately she learned a lot of bad eating habits from me and is starting to struggle which breaks my heart! Just don't want to see her go through what I have been through so young ...

My 13 year old son has been doing a modified version for a couple weeks now. My dh is diabetic so i already had the alternative plan. But i also modified it to ressemble phase 1, 3 and 4 as i didn't want to make it too strict for him and him giving up, as kids have trouble making sacrifice as they (in my opinion) cannot see the long-term goal.
During the week, he'll have a shake for breakfast, a restricted for lunch with 2 cups veggies and for dinner, meat and some carbs (ie 2 pieces whole wheat toast or some whole wheat pasta, or rice) and veggies. During the week-end as he has more time for breakfast, he'll have 2 piece toast and some fat free greek yogourt and berries. For lunch it will be like during the week but i add some cheese (he won't eat it during the week at school cause it doesn't stay cold enough) and dinner is the same as the week. I also allow him to have snacks cause he gets hungry, especially after school..i get him some sugar free jello, special K chips, whole grain crackers and nuts. Like in phase 4, dissociation of fat and carbs is very important so in the morning he can have some nuts or his jello and in the afternoon, the other types of snack (i check the labels to make sure that if they are higher in carbs, they are very low in fat). Also, i DO allow him to have little cheats when its a special occasion (like yesterday it was his sister's bday so he did have some tacos (without cheese) and a small piece of cake. I don't want him to be too deprive and give up and also want him to learn how to behave in social situation so that he can make the right choices when i'm not around. Also, since he's not in ketosis, it doesn't hurt his body as much. He lost 5lbs his first week and 2 lbs his second. |

She/we decided to start the Monday after school's out and she wants to go 100% OP (modified OP). The modified plan is definitely more flexible than ours, isn't it? I like your examples of variations though. I'd rather see her do that than go completely off if she's in a situation where she feels like she might "cheat". It's great to teach them modification behaviors now, isn't it? Life (and food choices) is rarely an all or nothing situation. You have to make informed choices. If you don't mind my asking, how much weight does your son have to lose? |

This last year, she's discovered a lot of the GF processed crap (cookies, cakes, crackers) that are more readily available. I think that's been the biggest culprit. Keep us posted about your son.
