Questions about the spinach....does the spinach in the bag count? My coach told me that does not count as a vegi, only if it's actually spinach, like in a can.

staceyjblack 06-03-2012 06:06 PM

never ever heard that before. I would prefer the fresh over the can any day...

mompattie 06-03-2012 06:25 PM

Spinach is spinach. Raw just takes up more volume than canned

swerdna59 06-03-2012 06:30 PM

How would fresh spinach in a bag not "count" as real spinach?!

Brandis 06-03-2012 09:02 PM

Both are real spinach. The fresh is better for you, because it's not heated and pressure cooked, then stored in a can that's likely leaching BPA into the food.

mompattie 06-03-2012 09:51 PM

I wonder if packaged candy would be okay but not canned candy as the packaged doesn't count cause it's not real like the canned? LOL. Kidding!! Sounds like this coach doesn't know what she's talking about!! Candy is candy. Spinach is spinach eh?

doublebaby 06-03-2012 09:54 PM

omg I can't believe she would tell a person that. I have FRESH spinach from a bag or the plastic container every single day, sometimes twice a day for a salad. It counts for me as in helping to lose 74 pounds! I know others use it in their drinks to get their veggies in by throwing in a handful of FRESH spinach. She may want to do some rechecking.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read on this forum! Who even uses canned spinach??? She could have at least said frozen!! Anything in a can is full of sodium. Fresh is best!

Longhorn Energy 06-03-2012 11:38 PM

Where does your coach think the spinach in the can came from??? Sheesh....

Fresh will always be better for you, and far easier to measure and also tastes better. Your coach needs to read a book or even better visit a farm and realize where foods come from. You should ask how they get the egg whites from the carton into the shell....

Popeye is the only person I know lol :dizzy:

Well I feel better! My 1st week I ate alot of fresh bagged spinach and asked if I could count it as part of my 4 cups of daily vegi's, but was told no. I am glad I know now that it counts towards it. :carrot: Thanks!

Yes it absolutely counts. I found it really hard to get my 4 cups a day in so i have 1 cup in my omelet every morning and often have spinach salad with my supper. So much easier than trying to choke down a head of cauliflower every day lol

blkbmr06 06-04-2012 01:41 AM

Bwahahahaha!!!! My "city" grandson couldn't figure out how lettuce from my garden looked, "just like the store stuff"....must have your coach as his teacher. I better ask him if he knows where milk and eggs come from! LOL

robin532 06-04-2012 08:22 AM

while we are talking spinach...To use in an omelette do you saute the spinach? And in a smoothie do you put in a blender buy itself to puree or with the liquid? Thanks!

After three weeks, I had my first spinach smoothie when I remembered the blender that was down deep in my kitchen cabinet! So surprised that it was so good and may even put 1 1/2 cups of "real" spinach in it today! I would definitely just throw the spinach into the omelette when cooking. It will wilt fast and be more nutritious.

There, again, is an example of why this forum is so beneficial to us. Since my "coach" knows hardly anything about IP, it has kept me from being discouraged in my weight loss using IP.

dizzyjean 06-04-2012 11:02 AM

Maybe what the coach might mean is that fresh spinach is a free food like lettuce. Otherwise, no idea, haha

MiamiCajun 07-02-2012 02:14 PM

When you measure your fresh spinach from a bag to get a cup for the day, you just throw your leaves into a measuring cup and see what one cup is right? Or do ya'll measure it using a food scale?

greeniris 07-02-2012 02:46 PM

The only food I weigh is the meat to make sure I'm getting the full 8 oz. every day. If the spinach leaves are large, I might tear them into 2 - 3 pieces before measuring.

That coach needs to attend some training!

Spinach is under select veggies, so I don't think it's free like lettuce.

locopollo 07-02-2012 08:25 PM

I used the Wildberry Yogurt packet and water and a handful of fresh spinach in the ol' Magic Bullet. It was tasty and satisfying. I will definitely be doing that again.

I am glad this thread got bumped up, forgot how much I lol'd the first time I read that coach's veggie advice!

Delgen 07-02-2012 08:43 PM

My coach told me that spinach needed to be measured before cooking. I would not know how much frozen spinach to eat.

She also told me that fresh spinach is the best veggie to eat when you are having slow weight loss.

Is there a chance that she might have meant frest spinach was freee, that canned spinach needs to be counted as a vegetable. That would make sense. My coach told me that when I get to needing something to eat to just grab a handful of fresh spinach and eat any time I want.
