Ruhbarb and tummy aches???

  • Okay, so i totally love ruhbarb because i feel like my veggies have become dessert...the sad thing is...about an hour after i eat it...i get horrible stomach cramps and then i sit on the toilet all night with the easy D if you know what i mean.... any one else get this? Is it just my body getting used to all the fibre in my diet??? or does my stomach not digest it properly or what? I only eat it stewed because i dont like the concept of eating it whole...

Well this is just me, but if this happened to me more than once I would probably quit eating it....

What ELSE are you putting in it? That is more likely the culprit...just a guess though...
  • i use a little bit of xylitol sweetner as i cant hack the taste of splenda and stevia... thats the only other thing besides water.
  • If you are using artificial sweeteners with it, I would guess that would be reason.

Agreed...try it without...if that isnt it, quit eating it, unless you dont mind spending the night on the john haha
  • See i switched from splenda and stevia over to xylitol because other people who were sensitive to splenda and stevia, found there stomach could handle the xylitol...so i switched..and also because i can detect the slightest bitter aftertaste in any of those sweetners, it was putting me off and i needed to find one that didnt give me that funny taste..xylitol doesnt have that taste suprisingly...my DH says that i must have a unique set of tastebuds because he cant taste the aftertaste like i can..i pick up on the chemically taste in any of the WF stuff...

WF stuff doesnt have a chemical taste...its vinegar...taste some, then taste some WF dressing...suprise, suprise its the same.

The aftertaste is in your head...If you tell yourself it isnt there, it wont be haha (maybe)

Or...maybe you like the taste of tree bark, thats where most xylitol comes from...
  • I made rhubarb the other day, but I made it in the oven. I put some WF Strawberry Sauce on it, some cinnamon and it turned out really tasty. Didn't add any stevia or Splenda.
  • All of the sugar alcohols (sweeteners ending in -ol and also isomalt) can have a laxative effect.

Rhubarb has it's own laxative effect. So do many fruits and vegetables (not just due to the fiber and water, but also to the natural fruit sugars and sugar alcohol content).

Combine the two (or eat "too much" of one) and you can get the double-whammy diarrhea.

To minimize the effects, you have to really watch your portions (and unfortunately experience is the only way to learn how much is too much).

When my brother and I were little, we would get bellyaches and diarrhea (and the adults occasionally did too) from eating too much fruit (we had a lot of fruits and veggies growing in our yard - a cherry tree, a pear tree, an apple tree, two peach trees, raspberry bushes, a patch of rhubarb, and a vegetable garden).

The apples and the rhubarb were the worst offenders (but they were so darned good, we just put up with a couple really bad case of the poopies and bellyaches every year).

My parents and grandparents used to joke that they knew summer had arrived when the kids got their first diarrhea of the season from the rhubarb.
  • I agree - I know malitol is really bad for me, stomach wise, and tests have shown that it does raise your blood sugar, despite what the manufacturers say. Erithytol is not supposed to have as bad an effect on blood sugar, so it might be worth trying. Don't know about the laxative effect, but stay away from malitol! It's in alot of stuff!
  • Try replacing your sweetener with the WF strawberry spread. (about a TBSP) And a touch of the WF Carmel Syrup. We eat it that way regularly and it is a definite favorite.
  • Hello,

I tasted rhubarb for the first time in my life a couple of weeks ago and I loved it.

I am wondering if you might be allergic to it, try different options of sweetners as others suggested and see if it makes a difference, if not, maybe it is the rhubarb itself that upsets your stomach.

I hope you'll get to figure it out and enjoy it.
