is TURNIP really OK?
I just ate a whole turnip. And feel like I made a big cheat it was so darn delicious! It was peeled, quartered, thin sliced ,toss with oil, S&P, roasted till crispy. Never thought I would ever regard this as a treat but after ten days of green it sure was good. Hard to believe this is a low carb veg. please tell me i haven't blown it sky high!!

What do these taste like... I've always walked right past them at the store..
|
Kind of hard to describe....I never ate them much before now, except at holidays made by Mom or Grramma and they always boiled, mashed, added butter. They are the closest veg to potato on this diet and I really enjoyed mine lat night. I got a small YELLOW turnip. The longer it cooks, the sweeter it becomes, otherwise there is a slightly bitter taste. Try them sliced 1/4 inch thin, toss in a big bowl with 2 tsp. Olive oil, add salt and pepper. Spread on a cookie sheet, single layer and roast in 425(f) oven for 30 min. Or so till they are soft inside yet brown and crispy on the outside. Deli IOU.

turnip is very much like rutabagga. I have used them in soups, stews, chili. Mashed with cauliflower for mashed potatoes, baked fries and hashbrowns. The fresh turnips are sweeter than the old ones. They do have a little bitter taste but this and kohlrabi are my go tos for potatoes...

Never tried Rutabugga nor Kolrabi! But I will..how do you cook them?

I tossed them in oil, S&P and a savory season blend before the oven. I think I will slice them like chips next time. I thought the fries were delicious under the IP veggie chili.

Great idea. No i did not think to boil them. I will try that because i really like the idea of "fries." Thank you for the advice.
BTW i did the kale chips too and they are SOOO good. |
I made turnip fries the other night and my 3-year-old gobbled them up before anyone else could get any. I also baked them with chicken the other night. I use them anywhere a recipe might call for potatoes, including cod cakes that we might have tonight.

I also tried them just a few days ago (after Steve posted the chill fries recipe) and I loved them! As others have said, boil for 5 minutes in salt water and then bake. After I boil them I put them in a ziploc bag, add olive oil, sea salt, a bit of garlic powder and a bit of chilly powder, shake shake shake, bake, and enjoy!

Yum. I am hitting the store this week so I am looking forward to trying them again. I also want to try the Chili Fries he posted. Thanks everyone.

I noticed the turnips have a bitter taste when they are not cooked long enough. If you cook them a little longer, the bitter taste goes away and they taste more like potatoes/fries. What I do is spray them with a non-stick butter flavored spray on a cookie sheet. I usually line it with foil first so the clean up is easier. Then I use a seasoning mix. I use the 20 Season Salute from TJ's, but any all seasonings will probably taste great too. I sprinkle it on top and bake at 425 for around 20 min. You can taste first too to make sure the bitter taste is gone. Mine never get real crisp, but they are delicious none the less.

I make turnip fries about 3x/week. In Canada you can buy them in bags already cut up into sticks, right next to the baby carrots. I toss them in some EVOO and add Mrs. Dash Southwest blend for a little kick. Cook them @ 425F for 20 mins then turn them and cook another 20 mins. Remove from oven and sprinkle with sea salt.
I have them everytime I make Big Mac in a Bowl. Had them last night with Roast chicken and broccoli slaw. Even have them with steak on the BBQ, my whole family likes them and better for you than potato fries. Enjoy! |
