Default Carbs, or net carbs? I'm confused!

Maybe you could help me with this one. I am hearing the IP doesn't recognize net carbs, but isn't the bottom line what your body recognizes, and how the body works with carbs? Why wouldn't it be appropriate to take the net into account, and if it is absolutely NOT ok, could someone please explain to me why so I can understand? I do want to stay as close to OP as I can, so if this is important enough... I'd want to stay on that path. ALTHO...it is true that the list itself is not exhaustive. There are other items that are certainly OP that are not there.

Thanks!!

I wish I could help you but I have seen both on the threads.
I just follow Phase 1 with the addition of the syrups once in awhile.
I think if we do that we will be okay.

I agree with Watkat, I just follow the sheet and don't count anything. If it is on that sheet then we can have it. Just have to follow it to a "T"

This is second-hand information but I've been told that the official US IP manual says total carbs. For an example of why this is important, hop over to the jicama thread. 2 cups = 22 carbs, as many carbs a some people eat per day when they are following IP strictly. If you subtract 11 grams of fiber the net is 11, and on the surface, looks good. But, and this is a big but, if you eat 2 9-gram packets, 4 cups of Romaine, 170 grams, at 6.91 carbs, and another vegetable with 6-8 carbs, plus all the incidentals, like vinegar, milk, etc., you're well over 60 grams of carbohydrates per day. For me, at least, and no matter how much fiber I get, I'd be out of ketosis in the blink of an eye. In fact, some of us, self included, can't go above 30 grams per day and stay in ketosis. It's worth thinking about, and I hope this helps.

Interesting, but I started phase 3 today (temporary wean off for a vacation, coming back strong in Sept. to phase 1 and rest of weight loss!). Phase 3 clearly refers to net carbs, perhaps it is not used in the first two.

Phase 3 is really nice, but it feels scary!!!
