Another PCOS gal here. Have had it all my life and it's really impacted me but didn't start getting any 'treatment' until we were trying to conceive with no luck. Doctor put me on metformin and it helped, but shortly thereafter they decided I had type II diabetes so it was metformin and insulin for me.

Never did manage to conceive with PCOS and I have the cystic ovaries, don't ovulate, etc. But now that I'm on IP and finally losing the weight my cycles are attempting to regulate which is fascinating to me.

I have it and this was the only diet that worked. I lost 40lbs in 4 months-may 2011-sept 2011 and have continued to keep that weight off for almost a year now. Basically, this works so well with PCOS because we are burning the fat stored rather than what we consume. Good luck!!!

Oooh it's so exciting to read everyone's positive experiences!! I've had it since I was a teen but it's gotten a lot worse. I'm constantly in pain and the doctors just say "take ibuprofen". Ibuprofen isn't a miracle drug, and my poor liver! I'm hoping once I lose some weight it will help.

Happy for everyone that is doing so well with their PCOS on IP :-)

Default I too have PCOS

I have been on the IP diet for almost 1 week and HAVE NOT cheated and I have lost 7 lbs so far and I have my first weigh in on Tuesday. I feel really good now too! I have had PCOS for 20+ years and I have tried a lot of diets out there with little or no success. I currently take metofrmin and Byetta that do help as well as spironolactone (to help with the hirsutism, and it does!) I am hoping to get off a lot of this medication with the weight loss. I was always told by my endocrinologist that my symptoms would improve if I lost weight but it was almost impossible to. A real catch-22! I am glad I found this board!

I never had a weight problem until I had my first child about 19 years ago when I developed PCOS. Like many other struggling to lose weight for whatever reason, I've tried working out, as well as so many products, medications and weight loss programs - nothing works. I just continue to gain weight throughout the years.

After 1 week on IP I've lost 4 pounds.

Has anyone else had success on IP with PCOS? I'm happy I lost 4 pounds the first week, and hope to continue to lose weight. I guess I'm still somewhat skeptical. I'm praying I lose all the weight I need to on this diet, but after 2 decades with a weight problem, I guess I kind of came to the sad conclusion that I'll always be overweight

So please, if anyone else has PCOS and is on this diet, please share your experience with me..............

I have PCOS and I have had the same problem. I am praying this work. This is my 2nd week. I lost 6.6 1st week ....i hope this week goes well..

Talking yes I do

I have had severe PCOS since the age of 14. I am now 47. I have seen many doctors all over my province to get help. I have had all the mentioned problems, infertility, high blood pressure, hair loss and facial hair, etc., etc. Finally found a hormone specialist that helped me three years ago with early menopause (yes for the past two years) and many hormone related issues including hypothyrodism. The one peace of the puzzle I still couldn't get was weight loss even though I have had a personal trainer for the past two years. Just finished my 3rd week of IP with a total weight loss of 10 pounds. I know I will be slower than everyone, just the nature of PCOS, but will give this all I have as I have lost more weight in three weeks than I have have 8 months. Am struggling with the constant thought of cheating, cravings have not subsided, but am extremely proud of not cheating this week (valentine's day, my birthday, my grandson's birthday as well as my daughter's all in one week -- chocolate, cake and more cake and not one cheat) My goal is to be the same weight or lower on my 25th wedding anniversary in May. Loving these posts and encouragement. Way more than my coach is telling me.

I have severe pain as well and got the "take Advil" advice also. I also have 2 blood clotting disorders so I cannot take birth control pills, which is the other solution doctors give. I gave up and went to a naturopathic doctor who used a combination of diet, ayurvedic, homeopathic and herbal supplements. It helped more than Advil, however, it is still there. I'm hoping it will be much less after 60 pounds.

I'm reading this thread with interest because although I do not have PCOS myself, I have two dear friends who do, who really need to lose weight. I am on Day 12 of the IP diet and have been wondering if this diet would be a good fit for people with PCOS. I'm definitely going to talk to my friends.

Dr. Brand Miller is a PhD from the Univ of Sydney who has studied low GI diets and has written a lot of books in the last 20 years...she has one on this problem. The new Revolution Glucose Guide to Living well with PCOS.

Good luck...! Hope they are receptive to the idea. There is also a book called the Thyroid Diet that is written by Mary J. Shoman...which also recommends a low GI diet to manage an under-active thyroid in conjunction with traditional treatment.

I too have PCOS, Insulin Resistance, and Hypothyroidism -- a combonation to be overweight!

I was diagnosed at 15 and have struggled every day with my weight. It is so funny to hear others who do not have these same struggles go on and on how exercise will do the trick. You just need to get moving. I, along with many others, have tried pretty much every diet in the book ... and yet have never lost the weight that I need to. I agree, exercise is needed for everyone because it is good for your body, heart, etc. So, definitely keep doing it, but for those of us with "other" conditions that affects our weight, we can't lose it!

So -- when I heard about IP, I went to the information session. I was so happy to hear them talking about insulin resistance. Prior to this, I have never heard anyone ever mention it, other than my doctor. So when they said that this is focused on people with insulin resistance, I felt like this was my one miracle to get the weight off.

Since starting a while back, I am down 30 lbs ... I could not believe it. 30 lbs ... that is a lot of weight!!! Years and Years of diet and exercise got me around 7-10 lbs ... that was it.

My only problem, is I am having the worst time staying OP! I do really well, then I cheat and I fall off the wagon. I am finally back on, I gained about 5 lbs back from falling off, but I know that I can get it off and the rest!!! I am determined. I have a goal in mind -- plus a hefty reward for reaching my goal!!

This diet DEFINITELY WORKS for us with "conditions"
