Joint Pain??
I started IP on Tuesday of last week, and although everything has been going great and I think I'm right on track, my left hip started hurting really badly when I walk. Walking up and down stairs doesn't hurt, but normal walking is super painful.
Of course, this could be unrelated to the diet, but I've never had pain in my hip like this before...I don't know if I'm deficient in something and need to start taking a supplement. I'm thinking of taking Glucosamine/ Chondroitin in addition to the fish oil/Omega3 I just started. Has anyone experienced this after starting the diet, and did anything help? I'm a RN, so spend 12 hours a day 3x/week walking non-stop and this pain has been making my job even more rough than it already is! Plus I chase a toddler on my days off, so I want this pain gone. I'm going to try the chiropractor too, since I know my alignment is off, but I've not experienced anything like this when my alignment has been out of whack in the past. |

Hip Pain and IP
Unfortunatly I don't have any answers, but came here looking. I've been on IP for almost 4 weeks when my hip pain (in both hips) came. I have pain with every step I take. I've never really had hip pain before and am wondering if it could be from IP. I also can't hardly go up stairs or do anything without my calves feeling like they might seize up also. It's interesting that a few people have had this hip pain. Now I wish I knew what it was caused it.

I don't have an answer either--I had the opposite experience.
Before IP I used to have very bad joint pain. I took glucosamine and it really helped me. About a month into IP I realized my knees were no longer making the scary noises when I walked down the steps and I quit taking it. The pain has never come back, my joints are in better shape than they were 10 years ago. My sister is dairy intolerant and it manifests as joint pain...were you regularly eating a pretty good amount of dairy before (the packets have a lot of whey). If so, I guess that woudn't be it....sorry I don't have any other thoughts! |
I've experienced just the opposite on IP. My back/neck/foot pain all went away while I was on IP but came back when I started adding carbs back into my diet. I take myristicol for my pain and it works wonders. It also helps your skin when losing weight.

I have been having terrible pain in my back since November. Don't know if it has anything to do with IP. Probably not. Went to a chiro and that made it even worse. Then I went and had xrays taken of my spine and they say it shows arthritis. Burning is terrible and it feels like it has a catch in it. When I take my shirt off over my head, I can hear my bones clicking in my spine. Sure hope it gets better soon! I'm tired of it!

My joints in my arms and legs are crawling with discomfort and pain. This is why I only do IP for like 6 weeks at a time. I have about 17 lbs left to lose. I'm not real sure I have the tolerance for it this round. We'll see. Personally I think it's the soy. I generally eat plenty of dairy.

I don't consume the soy protein items. |
It would be too soon to see an actual deficiency. Soy can cause joint pain, as well as gluten and many other things. I feel better on IP and I have OA and Fibro.

About 6-8 weeks into IP I had major hip pain which actually was located on the side of my hip where my leg joins. After adjustments from a chiropractor I went to my massage therapist who told me I had bursitis. After doing exercises, etc. it finally was almost gone (after about a month) when the same thing hit me in my shoulder. That is almost cleared up now.
I don't know if IP had anything to do with it but my massage therapist told me if I have joint problems it could be related to not eating enough protein so I have recently started adding an extra egg white daily. |
Yes. My first few days OP are full of joint pain. Knees and hips. Ibuprofen is the only thing that helps. I took it preemptively in the morning for my first few days his time around, and pain was better than last time. It was gone by day 5 or 6 for me.
Hang in there! |
IP and weight loss have helped me. The only thing that will fully help me is total hip replacement in both hips. I was born with hip dysplasia.

Good luck! |
Why don't you get an X-ray and a proper diagnosis rather than wasting money on a whole lot of things that are not proven to achieve anything.

Giving this thread a bump as I am experiencing really bad right hip pain while sitting. Walking, standing, laying down are not issues and I did not have this problem until this Sunday - 9 days in. I am prone to back problems and have seen a chiro on / off for over 10 years - but this is new. Before if I started experiencing this type of pain, my back would lock for a few days and gradually sort itself out (after a couple adjustments). This is 100% concentrated in my hip. I am glad to read there are / could be legitimate reasons this might be occurring - I was getting scarred it could be my kidney rebelling against ketosis.
I started doing my sciatic nerve yoga / stretching yesterday - and a warm heating pad helps a great deal. |

My IP coach is also a fitness trainer and the IP business is part of a chiropractor practice. Trainer coach says that my body reacts to carrying less weight by changing how it is carrying my weight - alignments shift. I began seeing the chiropractor and my alignment is improved, but I am still feeling pain after about one hr in any car seat... Pain more in buttocks than hip.... And I notice that I need to work on building up my glutes... They have deflated into a very flat flabby area of little padding for me to sit on.... :( I need to really embrace some physical activities that will help build muscle.... Losing weight feels good, but one does still need some booty, I think....:D |

I had pain at the top front of the thigh where it joins the hip for the first week or so, but started walking at that stage and although it twinged for a couple of weeks it did disappear completely. |
I also saw a mention of soy? Being hypothyroid for 6 years now, I do my best to avoid products with soy & IP products are laden with soy, as are the EAS shakes I'm using as a replacement.
My coach doesn't seem to think there is a true link to problems with soy...but from searching around I see a few 3FC members have done IP soy-free and am wondering if the joint pain is soy-induced (as I just started the EAS drinks on Friday 2/6). |

Try cutting out soy (purchasing some other products) for about 21 days and see if you notice a difference. Sometimes an elimination diet will reveal many things unique to us as individuals. I'm not using soy protein b/c it makes my stomach have more problems. If the use of soy protein is an issue and you still need RTD, try the Pure Protein brand shakes. They don't use soy protein. I use mostly powders and not RTD so that isn't as much as an issue. It is much easier to find soy-free powders. |

Yah - the last 4 days have been interesting to say the least. I keep asking myself if it's possible to react so quickly...but then I think about my cousin who has celiac's and seeing the very quick reaction he had when he accidentally ingested gluten (from a supposedly gluten-free pizza). My left knee has also started bothering me - it actually started before the hip. It's like my joints are flaring up / inflamed...:dizzy: Yes, the grab & go shakes are convenient but I can live without them - thank you for the suggestion though! Wegman's has a great soy-free vanilla protein powder I've used before - think it's time to grab a can! |
I had terrible knee pain before starting IP. The pain was so bad I thought I was going to need a knee replacement at 32 years old. 1-2 weeks into the protocol my knee pain and back pain were gone. I have since fallen off the wagon and my knee pain is back. Back on plan tomorrow
|
Stopped soy (EAS shakes) and voila, hip and knee pain are gone! Interesting to know. So now how limited am I with the IP foods...?
|
Looks Like I am going to be limited *sigh*
Ate the broccoli cheddar soup yesterday and after 2 days pain free, went to lay down last night and felt that nail in my hip again - its not as bad but it was achy today :( wonder if this intolerance would show up on an allergy test? |
