Bad breath-solutions?

I am starting to get smelly breath (I know it is a good sign) but it is not very attractive and my boyfriend has noticed as well. Does anybody have any cures or solutions? Is there any gum we are allowed to chew? Or breath mints of sorts?

spixiet 02-15-2011 07:31 PM

I had this problem when I tried South Beach... I ended up drinking tons of peppermint or spearmint tea. I had to try a few to find ones that I liked... it helped, but wasn't some magic cure. Most of them are decaf though, so there's no harm in drinking it all day -

It is horrible isn't it, my husband and kids notice. I've been told that it gets better but I'm on week six and it still is icky!! The only gum that I was told we can have is called Spry.

You can also have Altoids Smalls. Not the big regular ones, but the SF smalls.

I was told I could use Binaca mouth spray. I haven't tried any yet but my father used it frequently on this diet.

cajunbumblebee 02-15-2011 09:44 PM

uh oh, i think i misunderstood my coach. i thought he said the gum ws "stride", but i think he said "spry". i've been chewing stride with sorbitol. is this bad?

My coach told me Xylitol gum by x-Pure. Not sold in stores normally, some dental clinics have it, and you can order it on line. She told me only two a day.

Being a hygienist, I tell people with bad breath to eat items with chlorophyll. Like celery, also peanut butter, and yoghurt. There is a mouthrinse called made by oxyfresh that a lot of people swear helps them. When you brush your teeth also brush your tongue.

Not sure if that will help anyone, I guess on phase one kind of shuts down most of those. Maybe the WF pb on the celery lol.

i really like tea tree chewing sticks. you can get them from almost any health food store. they work awesome, and they only cost about $4 for 100 sticks. the freshness lasts for a long time.

I carry these mints in my purse all the time. They work great.

Listerine breath strips. I can't get spry or altoids where I live so these strips have been my "breath" saver.:)

krisbelle 02-16-2011 12:15 PM

i was under the impression that we couldnt use mints either. but thats great too know now. thanks

serendipityberry 02-16-2011 04:01 PM

I brush my teeth a lot more. My coach said I can chew 2 pc Trident gum/day so I save it for when I know I will be close to people. I also carry the small Altoids but just as any mint, the freshness goes away shortly after the mint.

I use Smart Mouth mouthwash. It's 100% alcohol free and it's two bottles that you mix immediately before swishing for a minute. There's also travel packages that are very handy. Makes your mouth a little dry, but not uncomfortably so. Used twice a day takes away the "stink". Sells for about $10 just about anywhere, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.

Jay Sykes the national coordinator for IP did a seminar at our clinic this weekend. His recommendation was binaca breath spray he said it is 0/0/0. He said that spry was the lowest carb count he has seen but would def recommend binaca as a first choice.

I recently started using an Orabrush for brushing my tongue. My daughter has used one also with success in reducing persistent "morning breath" we seemed to battle with her. The Orabrush is starting to show up in local stores after a bit of success over the Internet with funny-odd videos on YouTube, but can still be ordered online.

I have long used a tongue scraper and I find it (the Orabrush) more effective and gentler.

I haven't quite gotten through enough posts to learn what the culprit is in relation to the diet. Maybe the "cleansing" of the diet, toxins released in fat burning?

Locks, I'm a hygienist also :) I have some Oxyfresh but I'm not sure it works very well for the bad breath we get on this diet. I'm swishing with to much Listerine and chewing to much Trident but I'm "phobic" about bad breath being so close to my patients. Do you have a problem with your breath? I find myself putting on my mask as soon as I seat the patient LOL.:D

Hey hello nice to see you toothgirl. Me too, I am always worried about bad breath when talking with patients. I havent noticed the bad breath though, and belive me I am paranoid about it lol. I have a lot of perio patients and god their breath is to die for lol. I dont want to smell like that at all. So far all I have is a dry mouth when I dont drink like for 30 or 40 mins. I try to drink after each patient, then pee, Good thing my chair is beside the toilette, boss doesnt know how often I go :carrot:

I had to change my supper and use the drinks. I get like 3 mins for supper and thats pushing it, so the drinks work alot better for me. I cut some celery and cucumber to grab inbetween. I work three evenings and one day, and meal times are non existant pretty much.

We sell xpure gum at work, the xylitol gum we give to cancer patients with real bad dry mouth, so I grab one or two a night. Coach said no more then two a day.

Whole Cloves for fresh breath...

I used whole cloves to stop smoking many years ago and turns out that they make your breath smell pleasant. Just pop one in your mouth and keep it there 5-10 min--they keep the flavor longer than any gum and are 0/0/0.

locks 02-21-2011 09:08 AM

We have a mixture of cloves at work, for dry socket (infection after wisdom tooth extraction) and it smells really nice, looks like chewing tobacco though lol
