I'm Freezing....

I know I've read on this board about people being cold on the IP diet but this is crazy! My fingers are so cold and we are just starting winter. I have got in a habit of having tea just so I can hold it to keep warm.

Any suggestions?

showgirlaz 12-02-2010 03:54 PM

Gloves??? Running hands under water??

Really, nope. I have been cold to cool for about 10 months now. (it was one side effect that didn't clear up when I took a break) I am sitting here at 72 degrees wrapped in a long sleeve tee, cotton sweater hoodie, and a fleece blanket on my lap. Fingers feel cold much of the time.

It is just a side effect of the diet, the lower blood pressures, the loss of fat, and I am told, the excess vascular structure that was built to sustain the fat ... Not really sure what all that last part meant.

njajcjmomma 12-02-2010 03:58 PM

Layers lol... I have been having the same problem with being bone chillingly cold haha There are days where I end up with 2 tank tops, a long sleeve shirt and a sweater on. I also drink tea and just warm/hot water to try and warm myself up. Sorry couldnt be more helpful. Just know you are not alone.

For some reason I figured this wouldn't happen until I lost a lot of weight, not 12 (soon to be official at 16) pounds.

I can handle it but it's just a pain!

I learned in my anatomy & physiology class that our body is made up of billions of cells and each of those cells is no farther away from a blood supply than 3 cells. (I could draw this better than I'm probably explaining it). So, your body has increased its arterioles and capillaries and whatnot to provide blood supply to all that fat that we have. As we put on more weight, our body makes more vascular structures. As we lose weight, the vascular structures don't just disappear, you still have blood flowing through them. As we get thinner, those vessels are closer to the surface of our skin which cools the blood.

One possible explanation for the vascular structure thing. :-) I live my life in wool socks.

I'm always cold lately, too! Weird for me, as I've always been know as "the one" who was hot hot hot any time of year. Funny, I always thought it was the office that was over-heated and that everyone else was just crazy to think it was cold. Now I understand :).

My chiropractor told me something similar to what Mrs. Dietrich said - so interesting, isn't it? She said that for every pound you gain, it adds ONE MILE of blood vessels to your body. Isn't that incredible?!

Thank you! I had heard something similar but hadn't researched it. It makes sense the way you describe it. Doesn't that unnecessary structure eventually or ever "go away" or do we have it forever now? HMMM

kaarin 12-03-2010 01:55 AM

I can join this club! I've been cold since the second week on IP. When I get in my cold car after work to drive home, my index fingers actually get numb! I was worried at first, thinking there was something wrong with my circulation. I'm happy to see I'm not alone!

Gloves

So many people have mentioned how cold their hands are. I get that way in Germany. My solution is to where gloves that have open-ended fingers (for typing, etc.) as well as a mitten that fits over the glove. These are popular in Europe for people who ride bikes and need the grip of skin on handle bars and also need the mitten that covers the whole hand when you're just walking around. I hope that makes sense and you can see it.

Anyway Land's End now carries these and they have a 40% off, free shipping special going on. Hope this helps.

Oops. Afterthought. Full price is $12 so sale would be $8.40. These are warm knit gloves.

Thank you so much for telling us about these! I also have the cold all the time issue. I'm ordering some right now!

I agree!! I live in an area where winters get below zero quite often. Let's just say that the heater under my desk often cooks out my coworker. I recently purchased a Sunbeam heated throw from the W store on Black Friday. Best purchase EVER. I love it. I have a little cocoon of warmth at home and the office. My coworker is elated. I highly recommend buying one.

Cold

I agree I am always freezing. I am at my desk with 2 sweaters on and a lap throw. The only time I am warm is when it is 90 degrees. I also live where it gets below zero quite often. So I am very glad that my car has remote start so it is comfy when I get in.

YEAH!! I just saw some of these at the store and wondered how they work. I will have to get a pair.

Just got one of these at costco! It wasn't inexpensive (26.99 plus tax) but, soooo worth it!

Aunt Sheshie 12-03-2010 01:26 PM

I need to get one of those heated throws!.. I've never been one to be cold at room temperature in my whole life, so this is quite a novelty for me... I'm glad for the explanations about the vascular structures, makes sense to me... Linden, those gloves are way cool (anti-pun intended!), thanks for the heads-up...

As a fan of exercise, I find that doing a 10-15 minute workout will rev up my metabolism enough to keep me warm for a couple of hours, so I get after it a couple of times a day sometimes... of course, exercise is something everybody should discuss with their coaches before jumping into it...

hugs

coqui71 12-03-2010 01:33 PM

I'm ALWAYS cold!!!! But on day 3 of this diet I am feeling HOT ...face flushed, etc. PLEASE tell me this is my bodys metabolism kicking into igh gear and being the oven it SHOULD be!!!!

I would assume that eventually our bodies would absorb the superfluous vessels, but I don't know for sure!

I thought I read in the Life After thread that someone mentioned warming up again after being in Phase 4. Hope ahead or wishful thinking? :)

locks 02-04-2011 08:08 PM

Wow, I just was reading this thread, and I am on day three as well, and noticed my face was flushed, hope that it means my metabolisim is kicking in too !

ash825 02-04-2011 09:35 PM

I'm sitting here with a space heater blowing 1 foot from my feet, still freezing. Such a weird "side effect" of IP. ;)

serendipityberry 02-05-2011 12:21 AM

This is a very simplified biochem explanation but ketosis does chemically cause the body to cool down. Carbs are what your body uses to create ATP for the metabolism, thus if you are low carb, you don't have the little metabolic workshops (ATP) that fire up to generate heat when you're cold. In other words, fat metabolism is actually more effecient and doesn't generate the heat that sugars do.

As far as remedies, I love my microwavable slippers :) And I do enjoy the days that I have to take my mega dose of Vit D...it makes me warm.

JSP 02-05-2011 08:22 AM

I have always been cold, so I have not noticed any difference from this diet. When I am chilled and nothing else helps, I take a soak in a warm tub. After that I am good for hours, even on the coldest days.

A hot bath always seems to do the trick. I also like the microwave 'grain' bags. They do a great job too!

CC Sunshine 02-06-2011 08:24 AM

Glad to know I'm not alone. I guess we are not only the baggie pants club, but also the cold hands club! NOT that I am complaining! It all beats the overweight and unhealthy club we all left.

kaarin 02-06-2011 11:44 AM

Yesterday I was out in my yard doing pre-spring flower bed cleanup and raking. Thank goodness that I remembered my mom had knit me a pair of wool socks a few years ago that I have never worn before. Those on top of a regular pair of socks managed to keep my feet relatively cozy in my gum boots! :D
I am SO looking forward to Mexico next month to warm up!!!

SylvieG 02-07-2011 02:36 PM

Even bought heated seats in my new car... They are wonderfull!

When I first got my car I accidently hit the button. After a few minutes I started feeling a warm sensation 'down there'...I thought i had peed my pants:o Happy to find out it was just the heated seats.

Couldn't resist telling this. Two days after I got my first car with heated seats I took the union leader to lunch. On the way back I accidentally hit the passenger seat heat button. He never said a word. After 16 years, I'm still grinning.

I think this explains why I have been craving carbohydrates this winter. The cold has been almost intolerable, and now the oil truck can't get up our driveway because the snow has made it so narrow, so we have had to keep the thermostat down until the snow softens enough to be snow-blown. I have to cozy up to the woodstove to get warm.
The best place is the car - yes I have heated seats too .(My husband really doesn't like them - aren't their privates supposed to be kept cool?) :?::dizzy:;)

rulemom 02-12-2011 01:25 PM

I am either freezing or having a hot flash:^: I am thinking that my hormones are outta control and that has to do with the flushing. I will sit in my car with heat at full blast with butt warmers on and smile because I am getting skinny:carrot:
