Too Much Water???

  • Hi Everyone!!

Somebody told me that drinking more then 64 ounces of water ( 8, 8 ounce glasses) a day can be bad for you. They said it's almost has the same effects on your body as being drunk. Does anyone know anything about this??
  • I often drink more than 8 glasses of water a day...and I have never had a problem.
  • Yup - and it's called hyponatremia.

I found this link from the University of Florida website on the topic.

also - this article regarding the subject - the last paragraph of which I will quote here is a caveat, however:

    Quote:
It's Not How Much You Drink, It's How Fast You Drink It!

The kidneys of a healthy adult can process fifteen liters of water a day! You are unlikely to suffer from water intoxication, even if you drink a lot of water, as long as you drink over time as opposed to intaking an enormous volume at one time. As a general guideline, most adults need about three quarts of fluid each day. Much of that water comes from food, so 8-12 eight ounce glasses a day is a common recommended intake. You may need more water if the weather is very warm or very dry, if you are exercising, or if you are taking certain medications. The bottom line is this: it's possible to drink too much water, but unless you are running a marathon or an infant, water intoxication is a very uncommon condition.
  • so is 20oz in one breath (lol) okay? I am soooooooo thirsty all the time sometimes I will down 40oz in a couple minutes
  • 20 oz should be okay. 40 oz is getting into the danger zone. Depending on the person, the risk of hyponatremia presents itself around and intake of 2 liters within and hour or 3 liters within 2 hours.
  • Thanks Mrs Jim!! The link was very helpful!!!

Thanks everyone else for their input too!!!!
  • Never had a problem
I have never had a problem with the amount of water that I drink. I drink anywhere from 100-160 oz of water a day. Usually I will drink about 32 oz at a time as I just drink from my water bottle and seem to be thirsty with working out and moving around with my 1 & 2 yr old.

  • The only time I have heard of water intoxication was in the case of the hazing of a fraternity pledge.
