Default New weight loss/diabetes med goes on the market this week

Its called Belviq from Arena Pharmaceuticals. The first novel weight loss drug to hit the market in many, many years. Helps you lose weight by decreasing your appetite, and lowers your blood glucose as well as any type 2 diabetes med on the market.

So is it a diabetic drug or a weight loss drug?

I ask because I am curious about insurance paying. It will if it is a diabetic drug but not if a weight loss drug from what I understand.

Did the FDA approve for one or both conditions?

Won't it be wonderful if it works?

Its both. Its an appetite suppressant, and it also lowers blood glucose in a weight-loss independent manner. It can be prescribed for both indications.

It's only approved for weight loss. It's a controlled substance. IF insurance will pay for it, it will probably require prior approval, step therapy, or both.
