Oatmeal!!!!!!!!!!

I was wondering if oatmeal was as good for you cooked as uncooked. And is it even worth eating as it only has 4 grams of fiber per serving. I eat it but not really liking it and found that an apple has the same amount of fiber. Does oatmeal have something else in it that is good for you.

Thanks

If you don't like it don't eat it. For me, I find it to be very filling for little calories (if you don't add milk or too much sugar). As far as nutrients goes I'm not really sure but whatever it has you could probably find in something else.

Instant or quick cooking oatmeal is a poor choice because they are over processed. Steel cut or old fashioned oatmeal has an entirely different consistency or taste and more nutrients. You say only 4 grams of fiber - since that's about 1/6th of your daily need, that is excellent. And you can't compare oatmeal to an apple because one is a whole grain and one is a fruit.

I like it best baked!

canadacatman 03-09-2013 10:24 AM

How would i bake it. Would love a recipe. Thanks

I get the old fashioned oatmeal, add water, microwave. Then I add cinnamon, a little vanilla extra, 1/2 a chopped granny smith apple, and a few chopped up walnuts. LOVE IT!

canadacatman 03-09-2013 11:03 AM

Thanks CoachAndrea85 I never thought of adding more to it or cooking it in the microwave. How long does it go it for. Thanks

I also microwave my oatmeal! Super quick and easy :)
I don't really like oatmeal either but these have definitely helped with the taste; cinnamon, nuts, bananas, apples, and I've even tried a little peanut butter!

I stick with oatmeal because it is supposed to be a slow releasing carb -- so you should feel full longer. And I snack on an apple before my next meal.

I use a variation of this recipe: http://www.snack-girl.com/snack/healthy-baked-oatmeal/
I use more fruit (whatever i have, usually berries) and cinnamon and almond milk. I kind of change it every time I make it, but it's always yummy!

Jennifer- that sounds reallyreally good! Thanks so much for the baked oatmeal recipe!

This thread reminds me that I need to start eating more oatmeal often! I love a bit of brown sugar, cinnamon and apples in my oatmeal.

Jennifer1966 03-09-2013 09:05 PM

I've been wanting to try that recipe with apples instead of berries, which I usually use. I think i would peel and soften a little on the stove before adding them. Maybe I'll experiment tomorrow. I have a bunch of apples near their peak that need used in something!

I really appreciate the recipe. Thanks

i like to add splenda brown sugar to mine as well as chopped dates and walnuts...sometimes i use cinnamon and chopped apple as well but i also like to soften my apples before adding them, cooking them stovetop a little first

Can I ask why you are eating oatmeal? If you don't like it, then by all means have something else. There's nothing in oatmeal that you can't get from other foods.

Personally, I've had it cooked with milk and cinnamon, or raw with yoghurt.

Whether oatmeal is "good" for you or not depends on how much you have and what else you consume in your overall diet.

I started buying an instant oatmeal called Better Oats Brand Oat Revolution. Its really good and healthy too. It costs $1 for 5 pouches at my local Walmart. It has flaxseed and added vitamins/minerals in it.
