Fasting on work out days
I'm becoming more interested in intermittent fasting. Mostly I use a fast to recover or prepare for calorie overload or cheat days, and I usually fast if I have nothing going on. Low energy days, like I don't have to work or do a lot of running around.
I cheated heavy yesterday and I wanted to fast today. But I also want to do my boot camp work out this morning. Would it be bad to fast on the same day I work out? Is that going to throw my body in to some muscle wasting tizzy? I'm going to fast today, so I guess I just need to know if I should skip the workout. |
This sounds really disordered, sorry.
Do you have an ED history? |
twinieten-I don't know if you still need an answer but..
I fast as well, matter-of-fact I fasted after July 4th :) I do fast often. My understanding (and what works for me) is when doing a 24 hour fast, do workouts closer to the end of the fast, like right before breaking the fast. So if you fast for 24 hours and are scheduled to eat at 8pm then you would work out at 7pm. Since you haven't done it before maybe you should do a light workout the first time. I hope this helps!! |

Anyway, Royal Athena gave you great answers. Some people can do normal workouts in a fasted state, some cannot. I remember one advice is to do it within an hour of your eating window (say you work out at 4 and will eat at 5pm) or you could do it after you eat your last meal for the night. At first I couldn't do it in a fasted state but as time went on, I felt just fine in a fasted state as long as I do it close to my eating window. |
There is nothing disordered about Intermittant Fasting, when done correctly.
What WAS disordered...was my crazy addicted, binge-fest, food personality before I discovered IF ;). I regress. I always work out fasted. I break my fast about 5 hours after my workout with lots of protein and fat and some carbs (usually sweet potatoes) for muscle recovery. Never felt better :). Tweak your plan until it works for you! |
Don't know what you decided to do, but how did it go? Boot camp might be a rough start if you have never worked out fasted before- :0
Either it will work or it won't, but also might take some getting used to for a few weeks. It hasn't worked for me (other than a brisk, long walk) and I am jealous of the others that love it. My son is 20 and doing some IF for muscle gains, not weight loss. Anyway, he said that he has wonderful fasted workouts and sometime has some great strength gains. |
Thanks for the responses! I actually forgot I posted here.
Thank you for your concern MariaMaria. You really should do some research on intermittent fasting before you go around making suggestions about eating disorders. I actually didn't end up taking the class. I planned on it and I went to the location of the class. I couldn't find them and ended up leaving. I figured that if I ended up feeling weak after the workout from not eating, I'd break the fast and have a protein shake, and sort of change my plan from a fast day to a light eating day, I'd do a lunch to lunch fast or something. I ended up fasting until dinner time and felt great! |
Good for you for being flexible with how to go about this...
