How much protein

  • I was wondering how much protein a person really needs. I know they say like .8 grams per pound of body weight. I think that is really high considering they say 75% of people get too much protein daily. I just read this:

    Recommended Dietary Allowance for Protein
    Grams of protein
    needed each day
    Children ages 1 – 3 13
    Children ages 4 – 8 19
    Children ages 9 – 13 34
    Girls ages 14 – 18 46
    Boys ages 14 – 18 52
    Women ages 19 – 70+ 46
    Men ages 19 – 70+ 56

I would like your opinions on this. Now I know if your a body builder you will need more.

    Thanks
  • I think protein is one of those things that no one is going to agree on anytime soon. Some people say half your body weight in grams, some people do the 0.8 grams per pound thing, others just give you ranges... I tend to fall on the high side of the protein spectrum because it feels good, doesn't make me tired, aids in muscle recovery, and keeps me satisfied longer than pretzels or rice would.
  • Well how big I am I can not see me having to eat over 250grams of protein.
  • This is confusing, there is a lot of conflicting advice out there.

I have seen recommendations to base your calculations on your goal weight, so maybe that number would seem a bit more reasonable to you?
  • That might work a bit better for me as I do not know if over 250 grams is bad for me or will hurt me anyway but I sure do not want to find out.

    Thanks
