Losing Weight Without Exercise?

Hello Everyone!
I just wanted to know if any of you have lost weight just by changing you everyday diets. I have lost 9 pounds in the last two or so months and Im starting to worry about if Im just losing muscle mass or actual weight. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Sophie :]

When I first started losing weight I did no exercise whatsoever, I just didn't eat as much. Unless dancing in a club on a saturday night once a week counts! Doubt it made much difference!
I only started doing exercise after I had lost the weight and was worried I would put it on again after the weight loss slowed from just diet.
I'm not sure if you're losing muscle or fat, try getting your body fat checked so you can compare as time goes on? I would definitely advise exercise though, as when you lose weight then your toned muscles will show through straight away. And of course, it will speed up the process!
Congrats on your 9lbs that's wicked progress!

I am almost midway to goal and have not exercised. I will start exercising soon though.

I have a co-worker that lost 30+ pounds by being on a very strict diet because she hates exercise. I'm not a fan of exercise either but I have to because I personally can't lose weight without it. But to answer your question, yes it's possible to lose weight from diet alone but everyone is different.

I recommend getting some exercise too for better results.

I would rec at least doing some weights, even if you're not a fan of cardio. I think it helps counteract any muscle-loss.

I don't think you need to kill yourself on the treadmill, but I'd definitely advocate exercising. It's so helpful in regard to energy levels and focus.

I lost about 20lb last fall without exercise it was very very slow and it was just with a diet change. Ive started to exercise though because I find that I start having hip pain, and cant sleep good if I dont. I aim for about 30min at least 3 times a week. If I go on a clean spree though and clean a lot more then my normal weekly cleaning, I usually break a sweat and wear myself out so Ill count that as exercise.

I hate exercise, but 30min goes really fast when you are watching TV and It helps with my stamina plus it makes me feel refreshed. I started by walking slowly first, then brisk and now Im doing cardio. Weight is coming off faster with the added exercise. I lost 10lb my first month with exercise as opposed to 20lb in 5 months without it.

From what I understand, if you are on a low calorie diet, you need to do strength training to keep from losing muscle mass. You don't have to kill yourself or anything but it helps counteract the muscle loss as you go. Three times a week, half an hour each time isn't too bad. =) Just get a couple of weights and some bands, those things can be used for practically anything.

I lost almost all my weight above 200 lbs only walking for exercise.

It's inevitable that you'll lose a little muscle mass even WITH exercise because it takes a lot more to carry around 315 lbs than it does to carry around a body that weighs a lot less.

That said, dieting makes you skinny in your clothes, exercise makes you look good naked ;).

If nothing else do some light cardio, like walking, and lift weights to keep your muscle tissues healthy as your body transitions. I wish I'd started lifting a long time ago.

And I'm ADDICTED to endorphins!!! My workout is my anti-anxiety/antidepressant prescription :).

You can do this!

Thank you everyone. I do want to exercise but I don't know exactly what will work best for me to start with. Probably best if I just get up and do something instead of contemplate and do nothing. Right?

I agree with this, and it has to be something that you feel good about doing (rather than -- and I know this from experience -- "OMG I can't do this, why did I try this, I hate this, I'm never doing this again").

I think just walking outside or on a treadmill would be a great way to start, since walking is something everyone is already used to :)

Shanhat81: I know I've been in the whole "its not going to work for me, this is too hard!" situation. It really sucks.
JoJoP: I agree but right now there is no place to walk with it being winter and not having ANY money for a treadmill or a gym membership, so its really really hard right now.

I lost 40lbs in two years by simply changing my eating habits and lost another 10 over the past 2 months by adding in exercise. I know exercise has helped me a lot; I find it easier to move around, I don't feel so stiff all the time, and I'm no longer depressed all the time. I don't exercise for fitness; I exercise because it makes me feel good.

Walk away the pounds is a dvd. Leslie Sansone. They do 1miles, 2, etc...maybe your library can get them? They are just walking in place but fun.
