What is Intermittent Fasting?

I've noticed alot of people talking about being on an IF plan...but can't seem to find exactly what it is....

theres a thread on it somewhere here, but im not sure where
IF can be done in one of 2 GENERAL ways: You can either fast for 24 hours 2 or 3X a week... that means NOTHING for the full day, OR the other style s to do something like a 16-18 hour fast everyday, leaving you with only a 6-8 hour eating window..... IF can be great for maintaining weightloss, and can be used for weightloss as well.... But to lose fat you still have to be in an overall caloric deficit. With the daily fasting, of 16-18 hours, nutrient timing really plays an important role..... you want the bulk of your calories, or your first meal, when you break the fast-- to be immediately following, or right before your workout....this helps ensure the nutrients are used for recovery, and not stored. YOu would generally taper your meals, with the biggest (and highest carb) being your first meal, then you have one or 2 more meals within that 6-8 hour window, each one of them having less and less cals and carbs. You chose your window time. It has been shown to have many health benefits, such as promotion of human growth hormone (which aids in fat loss), decreases insulin sensitivity, some people are much more focused and productive while fasting. And no, FASTING WILL NOT EAT YOUR MUSCLE... thats a huge myth... if your were to fast all the time, everyday, never taking in many calories, then yes, your muscle would get eaten. But with IF its almost like a depletion period (where your body runs off of stored fat and energy) and then a re-load, or re-feed. Its actually very good for your hormones and leptin levels, etc.

Myself personally? i LIked it. I ENJOYED my fasting time, and not having to think about food (Ive done both methods) but my problem was that i have a lot of water retention and bloting issues, and carb sensitive.... so it left me in a constant state of being bloated, from the eating window....... I did, hoever, experience SIGNIFICANT gains in strength and energy during my workouts when i was IFing..... i never fed before a workout and it was nice to have more energy, as opposed to me always being in a CONSTANT state of depletion, from dieting down, and always dieting blah blah blah,

mkroyer, are there any online resources or books that you specifically recommend? I have looked around for IF resources etc and I haven't really found anything. They don't tell enough about the books to make me want to buy one of them. I'm wondering if there are any books that you recommend.

Darius, here is a link to the IF Group. Perhaps they can answer your questions. http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/supp...ort-group.html
