Does it REALLY matter what time I eat?

  • Ok so lets say I decide to not eat after 7...does it really matter if I decide to stop eating at 7, 8, 9 as long as I'm eating healthy. I must admit I a bit discouraged I've been sitting at 200lbs for a week and a half now. I don't eat after 6 and i'm eating really well. I go to the gym 5-6 days a week for 90 mins! I'm going to give it until this week and then idk what I'm going to do. I have to lose 10lbs this month. I really want to make this goal
  • No, it doesn't matter.
  • I always wonder about the not eating x amounto fhours before sleeping. I would guess it's about metabolism. Like how people say drink a glass of water after waking up or eat within an hour of waking up. Calories will stay the same no matter what time of the day, but it's all about metabolism.
  • Thanks guys! I thought it did because everyone says you shouldn't eat late....
  • I've learned that "everyone" says all kinds of things that have no basis in good, solid, evidence. That's not just for weight loss, either. I think my gardening forum is even worse on what "everyone" says.
  • I think it's different for each person. (As a yo-yo dieter) I've noticed that I lose weight faster by eating less *carbs* before I go to bed. I can eat all the vegetables I want, but the moment I stick a slice of bread in my mouth, I know I'm not going to see a loss on the scale the next day.

I also avoid high sodium foods in the evenings because I wake up puffy, no matter how much water I drink during the day. This isn't a weight loss thing, I just hate waking up w/ a fat feeling face.

OTOH, I have friends who SWEAR by carb-loading before bed to prep for their morning workouts (endurance runners, mostly).

tl;dr it depends on your body, your health goals, and your diet!
  • I was always told not to eat after 8 because going to bed after eating is bad for weight loss. To be honest I never questioned this until I read this thread. thank you for enlightening me to ponder this lol
  • hmmm.. see I have been doing that all week.. not eating anything after 7.. I never even questioned it but I know I did hear on a cooking show once that its ok to eat before bed as long as it not carbs... protien and veggies are good
  • Heheh. I grew up over in Europe, so it's quite standard for my family to get around to dinner between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. I never heard of the "eat this long before going to bed" til I came back to the States. Each body is unique, find the method that works for you and stick with it.
  • No. It only matters what you eat and that you're not sneaking to the fridge in the middle of the night. Carbs before bed release hunger hormone and suppress the satiety hormone making you extra hunger when you wake up. I think they raise cortisol too. Can't remember right now. That;s the only thing to worry about.
  • Thanks guys...so I tried not eating after 6 and seeing if it made a difference and I can honestly say it hasn't made a difference! Stupid me always accepting what "everyone" tells me. "everyone" and "somebody" are definintely in cahoots together! <--that for sure. Heather you are on to something! lol
