Ideal Weight

  • How do you all know what your ideal weight should be? I thought 150 was a good weight to aim for but now I'm thinking that may be to low. What web sight do you all use to figure out what your ideal weight should be?

    Thanks!
  • Hey there - You can use the CDC website

    http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/***...alculator.html

As a side note though, I think most will say that you should go with the weight you feel the most comfy at. If the website says you should be between 120-150 but you feel great at 160, then so be it!
  • For many of us it's loosely based on BMI. I know I chose mine because it's 10 pounds into the healthy range.

But from experience, I suggest aiming high. I think 150 is your "healthy" number. If that's what you're aiming for, go for it and celebrate when you get there. I wish I'd chosen 145 as my goal because I'm feeling pretty good where I am, but since I chose 135 I stupidly have to get there. Dumb right? It depends on your personality, of course. My head's messing with me. But if you choose a high goal and reach it, you can always keep going. And you get to have a GOAL celebration along the way. Win-win.
  • You can't really tell your ideal weight until you well get closer to it Most people pick arbitrary goal weights and adjust as they get closer to the goal.
  • My doctor said that I should weigh 155 lbs because I am 5'11, when I asked him how he came up with this # he said his formula is 100 lbs for 5ft then 5 pounds for every inch over that.
I told him he was NUTS! I didn't even weigh that in high school and I wasn't overweight then....so needless to say I will weight and see how I look and feel as the scale goes down.
    Good luck in your journey

I can definitely relate. A lot of the numbers that you can get from calculators, etc, are just general examples of what "ideal" is. I'm 6'3 and weigh around 187, which is "normal", but that doesn't mean I feel like I'm in a good place.

  • I was wondering about my goal weight too.. it may be too low.. but at this point, it doesn't really matter. I will adjust it if I have to when the time gets closer.. even though I have never heard of that formula the doctor used.. it would work for me.. and even put me at 10 lbs OVER what I would like to weigh. I used to weigh around 120-125.. but this time around, I would definitely like to be more muscular, and I know muscle weighs more than fat... so I have to keep that in mind.

I'm the same height at you and my weight should be 140, my ideal weight is 130 but thats more difficult to manage than 140.
  • I've been curious about this, too. I always thought my happy weight was 130, but then I realized it was impossible to maintain. My doctor said 150 is healthier for me to think about. It's interesting because I was so wrong when I was younger.
