The Hacker's Diet...

One of my major problems with weight loss was that I never understood the science behind it. "Just eat less" didn't quite work for me as an answer. John Walker's The Hacker's Diet at Fourmilab Switzerland helped me lose weight over the course of a year to drop from 330 pounds down to 295 pounds.

As I explained in my introduction post, I gave in to co-worker lunchtime peer pressure and stopped the diet after taking a new job. I'm now picking up where I left off (287 pounds this morning) and have a goal set for 200 pounds! :)

The Hacker's Diet is basically a free book on John's Web site that explains how geeks and slug computer guys like me can lose weight without giving up all those wonderful geek things in life! It also has a great weight monitoring program for Palm OS in the software section called EatWatch.

Anyway, just figured I'd share and see if anyone else had used this system!

Ah! The Hacker's Diet!

I discovered that about 5 years ago and I loved the concept. I especially loved all the technical stuff. The charts and the formulas and all! But, alas, I didn't ever really apply myself to trying it.

I think if one has a mathematical mind and the patience to sit down with it all, this is a very interesting read!
Don't fear that you have to calculate everything either, because he has downloadable stuff to use with your spreadsheet on your computer (or he did when I checked it out years ago).

Graphs and charts are so much fun! And motivational!

One downside though, he makes you weigh-in daily and although *I* personally do that anyway, I know a lot of dieters would go crazy doing that!!

Just my two cents!

Charts, graphs, and reports

For those who loves charts and graphs, try www.fitday.com. I love this site. It's free, easy to use and so darn cool! If you track anything like fat grams or calories, you need this site. I used to try to write down everything I ate, but this is much easier.

Well, I'm a total hacker geek so the scientific approach really worked for me. Same thing for weighing in daily...that way I have an immediate chart of my progress. :D Weighing in only once a week would drive me crazy!
