Guess the Diagnosis

Believe it or not .... there's something about me that I've never shared with you folks. I know I've shared bits and pieces but not the whole shebang.
I'm posting in the general column so as not to give any clues.;)

I'll tell ya how it went. Then I'll pop in once in a while to clarify any questions or anything like that. And I'll tell ya how it all turned out later today.

So here goes ...

After my second baby (1983-84) I was super tired. I failed a glucose tolerance test ... to low and too high. I inexplicably lost weight.

It took over a year to concieve the third time.

After baby#3 (1986) I had reams of blood work to find out why I was so tired. They all came back normal.

Over the years my resting pulse climbed to almost 100 and my blood pressure crept up. And I gained 40 lbs, a lot of which was belly fat.

My blood work remained good except for creeping cholesterol.

Migraine activity increased.

I was sooo tired. I would lie at work so that I could go home and nap.

I developed leg pain, back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain and abdominal pain. All tested ... all showed nothing.

Can you identify? Any ideas?

Oh I feel fabulous now.
Here's another clue ... it's not terminal. It can be genetic, familial or environmental.

Well, I was hoping folks would chime in who have had similar symptoms .... because not only is it preventable but very often is almost completely reversable .... and .....??? is present in about 5% of people with normal body weight, 22% of those who are overweight and 60% of those considered obese. Adults who continue to gain 5 or more pounds per year raise their risk of developing ??? by up to 45%.

Our family doctor sent me to a dietician. I didn't like her. Stop frying. Well, thank you very much for that priceless tidbit!
When family doc#2 took my thready, fast pulse he suggested I try walking. Young buck ... smart guy! Didn't he know what I did for a living? I was on my feet all day.Family doc #3 looked at the weight on my chart and said "Hmmm I didn't know you were that heavy ..." Oh my heavens, that nice young man thinks I'm fat!
Here's the treatment ....
according to medicinenet .....Lifestyle modification is the preferred treatment of metabolic syndrome. Weight reduction usually requires a specifically tailored multifaceted program that includes diet and exercise.

according to the Mayo clinic .... Exercise. Doctors recommend getting 30 to 60 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, every day.
Lose weight. Losing as little as 5 percent to 10 percent of your body weight can reduce insulin levels and blood pressure and decrease your risk of diabetes.

according to the American Heart Association ....Weight loss to achieve a desirable weight
Increased physical activity, with a goal of at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity on most days of the week
Healthy eating habits that include reduced intake of saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol

I never took any medications. I never saw a specialist.
It was a difficult lesson in personal responsibility.

Wow, that's crazy. I just looked at this thread now, but I wasn't going to have guessed right before you put up why. Good job!! :)

PCOS
Metabolic syndrome as well as Syndrome X were all interchangeable a few years back when i was first DX'd with it.

Many times after a woman is diagnosed with hypothyroidism they STOP testing because almost ALL of the symptoms are the same.

I think that's the biggest problem ... the symptoms all being so similar. Any of these guesses could have been the one.

My biggest problem was that I really wanted it to be something someone could fix for me with a pill or something. I had to learn that it was something I had done to myself and that only I could fix.
Perverse, right? I really wanted there to be something gravely wrong with me.
