I prefer to pack myself but have the movers do the big stuff, like take the bed apart. Stick with nationally-known companies, remember that your experience will depend upon the local franchise you use, so check them out particularly.
Cost is based on poundage and mileage, I moved a 3 bedroom house from Las Vegas to New Orleans for I think it was around $3000. This was a PACKED 3 bedroom house.

Jill,

Hiring movers actually isn't that expensive. I compared the price for U-haul + gas when I moved and it was more expensive than hiring the movers.

Maybe it's because I don't move very far. My last move was from Manassas to Alexandria (maybe 35 miles?), and all the quotes I got from moving companies were well over $1,000, whereas our moving truck rental and some delivery pizzas to feed the crew (my parents and my boyfriend's cousin ;) ) was only a couple hundred bucks. Maybe I just got bad quotes, though--I'll have to be more thorough next time around.

Next year, we're hoping to move from Alexandria to Chantilly (about 30 miles), so I'm guessing I'll run into the same thing.

Ahh maybe local moves that is true. I did use movers when I moved from one city to another as well and I'm sure it would've cost less to use a u-haul or rental truck but I enjoyed using movers. I told DF that we when we move we should use movers, mostly because I don't want to carry anything from our 4th floor apartment down to the ground floor :)

We were also thinking about moving to Chantilly or somewhere near there. I think we have nixed that idea for the moment at least. My company is building a brand new facility down there though and so it was something we at least considered.

my husband and I are hellbent on not moving ourselves again. It may be cheaper to do it ourselves, but I can't put a price on my sanity. I'm all for packing stuff up, but not for carrying it and driving it and hauling it around. No thank you. We will keep the stuff we really want to have right away as well as thigns we just want to be in our sight at all times with us, in my truck and his car. It has a lot to do with what kind of experiences people have had with andd with out movers, how far it was, ect. I am much, much more open to move states away knowing that I don't have to worry about the stuff in the bed of my truck, and the wobbly uhaul trailer. It could have had a lot to do with how we went about moving. We didn't have any family or friends to help us move, so it was quite difficult. Carrying dryer and washers up stairs w/ low ceilings is not my idea of a good time. Thinking back on it gives me a headache.

With different things that are happening w/ his company, we may end up staying here afterall. I figure it doesn't hurt to find some stuff out...and I think that what other people have experienced helpls a lot more than the "testimonials" you may see on different movign sites.

Will be moving in the (hopefully) near future. Actually signed a contract on a house a couple weeks ago, seller signed, did the appraisal, seller changed his mind...like he had one to begin with. Putz. We could hold him to the deal, but who wants to go through all that with courts and B.S.? So we agreed to cancel the deal...ONLY with his signature on an agreement to pay the appraisal, accompanied by a check for said appraisal. Then and only then will the putz get out of what he signed. ::sigh::

Other than that...still looking. Have brought in boxes and packing materials and intend to box something each day...after I get over my cold that is. Have thought about movers for the big stuff, but will probably just go with all the guys from the church again and another UHaul. We've always done it ourselves. Those long moves, NH to VA and VA to WV were $1500 and $1200 each for the UHaul and car carrier. This will be an in-town move which we can do with a $19.95 UHaul. Although I promised myself to never use UHaul again after they failed to meet our reservation on the one when we moved here and HAD to move that particular day due to leases and schedules. Ended up renting Budget the night before the move. ::sigh::

I'd seriously like a mover, but hubby's cheap and will just do it himself again. LOL My aunt's company paid for hers many years ago when they took her to Chicago from WV. I know it was in the thousands (I'm thinking around $5,000. That was packing it all and unpacking it and setting it up to a pre-specified arrangement in the new place. My aunt and her family just moved right in with everything already in place.

I just read your last post. You can hire movers in varying stages. You can haul it yourself and get people to pack/unpack for you, or pack and get people to load/unload, or get people to do the entire thing. So if it's just moving the large items, think about hiring a company who will provide some warm bodies to load/unload the truck. I remember wanting to go with movers the last time and checking online and finding one of the well known companies who provided a link to movers. You could search by your area and find the movers for that area. I'm thinking it was Mayflower but could be wrong.
