I have this problem alot. I have a few cats that I've owned for a very long time. One is always having kittens, even though we keep her inside (and the other cat is female too). Sometimes I guess she gets out, or my uncle throws her out because he's tired of hearing her meow when she's in heat.

We don't have enough to get them fixed. And it's costs $20 per kitten to take them to the shelter. @_@. mostly we keep the kittens till we find homes for them. But most often we have to put them outside because my Grandmother (who I live with) hates the kittens and I know they ether get picked up by other people, or by the shelter or even eaten by a owl or such. It makes me sad, and I wish getting animals fixed didn't cost so much.

Its sad that it costs so much, maybe have you tried asking if they accept payments? I know our vets have this program called care credit or something or another which allows you to make payments on treatments.

I know its expensive but so well worth it in the end for your pet. I hope you can find a way to get your cat(s) fixed.

Also another idea when you have kittens who need a home, why not post a flyer at work or the local grocery store? Might help.

I can sympathize. When I was young we had two mama cats have kittens at the same time. We ended up with 13 cats! So I called up my grandpa who had a farm and asked him if I could bring some of the cats out to his house since he had a nice big farm and all. He said yes and so I took a lot of them over to him. He was tickled because they kept the mice and rodents away and gave him something to look forward too. (feeding them, caring for them).

I know how it feels!!! People drop off their dogs around here all the time (we live in the country as well) Plus, my neighbors have like 30 cats and dont take care of them. A few come over and i feed them (we have cats, so i always have big bags of food). Its not even their actual food hunger that hurts me, its their hunger for love. They have been so betrayed by their owners, yet they are so loving and trusting to me and my family. One actually climbed up a tree to rub on my shoulder!!! It broke my heart. I wish i could save them all.

Also, some people around here (teenage boys in particular) are extremely cruel to animals, for their own sick pleasure. Personally, i think if your kids are cruel to animals, you have failed as a parent, unless your child has a mental sickness. Simple as that. Your child is lacking in empathy, sympathy, compassion, etc.

We saved all our cats, not from a shelter, but from random places. We took a small, pathetic, malnourished little tabby and turned her into a 15 lb "Queen of the house" Her name is Honey. Another cat, Gracie, was living in a nasty NASTY house. Then, our oldest cat, Oscar, was a barn cat. We got him as a kitten, then soon learned after that most of his brothers and sisters were eaten by coyotes

I am quite the animal lover. We have 12 chickens, 3 dogs, 3 cats, and 2 cockatiels. I am already planning to go to vet school, so i can help animals for a living. Thats my dream!

I just wish people would stop viewing animals as disposable and start treating them as though they have feelings. Which, they do. If you say they dont, you are helplessly dumb. (sorry, im quite opinionated on this subject)

Alicia I agree. It is sad and I can't imagine people being mean or cruel to animals. Even though at times living in the country we may have had a lot of animals about, they always got cared for and never had to worry about a lack of love and attention. Sad that a lot of animals do go without that.

This is why I like animals better than people.

So many animals are turned out every day, because people just don't have the patience &/or knowledge to deal with them. And so many strays out there because people don't have their pets neutered or spayed.

I get angry when people "get rid of" their pets when they move or have a baby. You know, when pets react badly, by biting or scratching or pee'n & poop'n on the floor, the animals aren't to blame, the owners are. Let's not forget that owners are human and if not properly trained humans will turn on you!

In my opinion, petting animals is not a very nice to do in the first place...they dont belong in a community of other species surrounding them 24/7...they need to be in the wild with their loved ones....

I wouldnt like to be petted no matter what good food or fancy pet house anyone made for me and be dragged around with a chain!!! Thats just my opinion...we humans are so selfsih that we make tehm live with us under our conditions (vaccination, sterlization etc etc....)

You want to release domesticated cats/dogs into the wild to survive with their loved ones?

Because of HUMANS and their greed & stupidity, there's barely any "wild" left for any animals.

Dogs & cats have been domesticated for far too long to ever be turned out to fend for themselves.

Humans ruin everything they touch. When's the last time you heard of a pack of wolves or wilderbeast or a flock of seagulls destroying land because of religious ignorance? Or oil? Or evading a tyranical ruler?

Like I said: Humans ruin everything.

At the genetic point, which tame wolves could no longer compete successfully in the wild, a subspecies of the wolves (Canis lupus) was created called the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris). Archaeology has placed the earliest known domestication at potentially 10,000 BC and with certainty at 7,000 BC.

More info here, including a definition of domesticated:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domesticated

Domesticated: These species or varieties are bred and raised under human control for many generations and are substantially altered as a group in appearance or behavior. Examples include dogs, cats, sheep, cattle, chickens, llamas, guinea pigs and laboratory mice.

But they've been domesticated for so long that they would not last in the wild. You can't just set housepets free and think they'll actually survive--heck, look at the number of pets who get killed even though they DO have people caring for them (getting hit by cars, attacked by other wild animals, etc.). Many species have been pets for literally thousands of years and have lost their instincts and even physical characteristics required for survival in the wild. For instance, the shapes of many dogs' snouts have changed and are no longer conducive to hunting, and even their eyes have grown closer together, weakening their peripheral radius and, therefore, their defenses against predators. If they really could survive on their own, then there wouldn't be so many sickly-looking strays about--they'd all be healthy and vibrant.

Anyway...

I've never had a stray dropped off near my house, but my family seems to be a magnet for wild animals in need. We've nursed/brought to a wild animal rehabilitation specialist/safely relocated wild baby birds, baby bunnies, baby raccoons, turtles...I absolutely LOVE animals and wish I could have one (or more!), but we're only allowed cats in my apartment building, and it is darn expensive (not just the food and care, but it's a nonrefundable $250 pet fee, a $150 pet deposit, plus an additional $30 per month "pet rent")! Those animal cop shows on Animal Planet are so sad, but what I think is saddest are the people who love animals and think they are helping them but are actually hurting them--in particular, hoarders.

after so many years of domestication..they lost their ability to survive in the wild.(cats are wild animals too). but everyone survives and adapts with time!!! they should be left to live with thier fellow animals and not with us!
