what`s your BMI?? (copy and paste dont be embarrassed i show mine)

I am very Embarrassed about my body, but I`m ready to get in shape! :D

  • BMI: Body Mass Index

36.3

A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered healthy for adults. A BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of 30 and above is considered obese. People with BMIs of 18.5 or less are considered underweight.

BMI CHART:
BMI less than 18.50 } Underweight

BMI 18.50-24.99 } Healthy Weight
BMI 25.00-29.99 } Overweight
BMI 30 or more } Obese

  • Waist to Height ratio is: 0.57
My body shape indicates: Increased Risk!

A waist-to-height ratio under .50 is generally considered healthy. This ratio may give a more accurate assessment of health for people who are muscular or for women who have a "pear" rather then an "apple" body shape.

Be Careful:
You have a thin shape and you may need to gain weight.

Healthy: You have a healthy shape!
Increased Risk: This measurement indicates a "pear" body shape. Excess fat is stored around the hips and thighs, which is less harmful to health than fat stored around the belly (an apple shape).
Take Action: This measurement indicates an "apple" body shape. Excess fat stored in the stomach area increases your risk of serious conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer.
  • My Healthy Weight Range is: Between 104 and 141 pounds for your height of 5' 3"
  • Your RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) is:
2590

Your body needs energy to function, and your resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the number of calories your body burns simply by living. Regular exercise increases your RMR and helps to keep your body healthy and feeling great!
  • Your Daily Target Caloric Intake is:
1590
  • Weight goal you entered:
Lose 2 pounds per week.

About Your Weight and Caloric Recommendations

Your current weight is higher than what's considered healthy. To prevent serious medical problems down the road, try to aim for a weight below 141 pounds. We know that losing weight takes time and a lot of effort. Try to set short-term goals such as losing 5 pounds at a time to help gain a sense of accomplishment as you aim for your weight goal.
To reach your weight goal — and your short-term weight loss goals — keep your daily caloric intake to about 1590 calories and combine this with regular exercise and physical activity. Once you reach your weight goal, you will need to recalculate your daily caloric intake.
Your healthy weight range is assessed using the body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-tallness formula. While these measurements do not give you a specific ideal weight, they do suggest an ideal weight range.

BMI by itself is meaningless when applied to an individual.

MauiKai 09-18-2013 03:32 PM

She asked others to share what their BMI was, not what they think of it's relevance.

With my weight loss thus far my BMI is 22.8 if I recall correctly.

d130 09-18-2013 04:14 PM

For my current weight, my BMI is 21.5.

My starting BMI was just over 30. :)

vintagecat 09-18-2013 04:21 PM

35.5.

To a point I agree with John. BMI for people that are very muscular or the very fit will often be misleading. At the top ends of BMIs for normal people like you and I it will be fairly meaningful, in other words, we need to get our rears in gear and get some of the weight off. That I'm quite active may make my 35.5 not as bad as a 35.5 that can't walk across the room without breathing heavily yet it is still 35.5 in the end or obese which is factual. I doubt any 5'6" woman could weigh 220 and not be at least quite overweight no matter how fit.

I plan on stopping at a mid "overweight" category for my height though at which point I will ignore the BMI altogether and look for fitness to be my goal. My 2 cents.

zoesmom 09-18-2013 04:51 PM

36.6 (started off at 47.3)

that being said, I agree entirely with vintagecat. My fat mass vs muscle mass will NEVER allow me to get to the healthy range. As it is, my lean mass is 138 pounds, give or take a half a pound, and given that for my height 150 is considered normal, I'm not getting there. I'll likely be able to go as low as 160, and that will be pushing it.

And before anyone asks, YES my numbers are from a DEXA scan, as recent as yesterday.

amandie 09-18-2013 05:06 PM

I started at 40.7 and 28.6 at 159lbs. I plan to stop losing weight at 150 (BMI- 27)and focus on shedding fat/building muscle.

SarainMN 09-18-2013 05:32 PM

33.7

Jacqui_D 09-18-2013 05:59 PM

I started out at 32.1, and now I'm at 29.3. I don't know if I'm allowed to post this link but since it's from the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services and not some commercial site, maybe they'll let me. This is the BMI calculator I use. http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/...MI/bmicalc.htm

Elladorine 09-18-2013 06:10 PM

I don't put much stock into the numbers, but they're interesting none-the-less. :p

I started out at a BMI of 54.7!

I managed to get down to 31.9.

I'm guessing I'm still in that range, but any kind of measurement right now wouldn't be inaccurate. :preg:

i think BMI is a joke for me anyway

at 5'6" and roughly 155 lbs my BMI is 25.0 which puts me into the overweight category and i have people telling me all the time to stop losing weight. Can't win for losing!
i just don't *think* i look overweight :\

Sorry, kind of venting and the entire BMI thing is frustrating to me at least.

ReillyJ, you look FANTASTIC! You obviously are not overweight. The Dept. Of Health and Human Services does qualify the BMI. It states that it has limits:

"BMI is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. It is calculated from your height and weight. BMI is an estimate of body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk for certain diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers. Although BMI can be used for most men and women, it does have some limits: It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build. It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle."

TY Jacqui

Didn't mean to hijack this thread! But i did want to show that the BMI charts never made sense to me, i always felt like an odd duck because i top the charts and wear size 10's or 12's and felt that there's something wrong with me.

vintagecat 09-18-2013 08:28 PM

Reilly and Jacqui,

That's why I plan to stop at "overweight". The BMI is not useful to me at the bottom end and is almost as flawed as the height/weight charts of old. At 5'6" the BMI says a healthy weight is 115 to 150. Younger, I'd say 150ish is okay but 115? Seriously at 115 I'd be skeletal. The lowest I've ever weighed as an adult is 125 and people were concerned about how thin I was getting.

In the 70s as a teen I ran 60 miles a week, could leg press 300#, ran consistent 7.5 minute miles on long courses but the "armed services" informed me that I would have to go to fat girl camp if I joined at 142 pounds. Absurd so I told them to pound sand.

It's all relative. The BMI for me is useful, later on, it won't be.
