Scrunchies?

One of my fb friends posted something about how scrunchies are out of style and I just read one of those silly # list things, this one was 20 styles that are out and should never come back...and scrunchies were on the list.

I remember the 80s right before scrunchies got big, and mom would pull my super thick curly hair up with rubber bands and eventually switched to using yarn, yes yarn because the rubber bands got caught in my hair resuting in crying and having to cut them out!

I dont always were my hair up. but when I do I use a scrunchie! lol

What else am I supposed to use for a ponytail..like none of these scrunchies haters can answer that question...
I have no intention of stopping my scrunchie wearing as they have made wearing my hair back a non tramatic experience, but I'm still curious what else is there to hold hair back, thick heavy curly hair...
Anyone?

I love my scrunchies!!! And if they're out of style - too effing bad - I'm wearing them anyway!

veggiedawg 08-20-2013 04:47 PM

LOL I loved scrunchies and I wish they'd sell them again!
I actually used to sew my own :)

My hair is the opposite of yours: thin and straight. However, I have trouble with hair elastics too since my hair breaks easily.

I sometimes use a "spin pin" to put my hair up in a bun or French twist. You might want to try them...I was surprised how secure they are.

 Scrunchies here too!!! I don't sport them on a regular basis or anything when I go out or go to work, but the second I'm in for the night the scrunchie goes in til the next morning.

I do not and have never worn a scrunchie.

Elastic bands do just fine. Although people used to say they give you split ends.

I have extremely thick and curly hair. I bought these at a fair 4-5 years ago and they still have their shape and hold very well since they're made from piano wire. When my hair is straight I can wear the medium and my hair goes to the middle of my back. When it's curly it comes to the shoulder blade, and while the medium does hold, the larger one would be better I think.

Missy-

Those are beautiful, so pretty! I used to wear scrunchies but now I wear ponytail elastics, although mine usually get so stretched out because my hair is long and thick. I also like barettes that have a clip on them, those are stylish, I think. Sometimes I will wear a headband just to push my hair away from my face, although if I wear them too long, I sometimes will get a headache. I have seen some pretty hair wraps that are like a big circle of fabric to push hair away from the face, some are very nice.

:)

I keep my hair braided more than 95% of time because it's so long and thick. I am a proud daily scrunchy wearer! Lol

I think scrunchies as a fashion statement are dead, but elastic bands of any kind are just as dead. For functionality, I think they're timeless. For the most part, a simple ponytail is usually intended to be functional, not high fashion, so a simple scrunchie is just as acceptable as any elastic band.

What I think is way out of style are the elaborate scrunchies and scrunchie hairstyles that were used for even the dressiest of occasions, such as the satin and pearl "scrunchies as big as your head" monstrosities.

For everyday wear, I think a simple scrunchie is every bit as "in style" as any elastic band (which is to say, not terribly hip, but pretty normal for casual situations), so long as the scrunchie(s) aren't so numerous, big, bright, gaudy, or embellished that they draw all eyes to the scrunchie(s).

Well, go ahead and put me on What Not to Wear. I don't care. I wear my hair up with a scrunchie in a messy pony at least two or three times a week. 1994 called & they want their hairstyle back!

Stacy and Clinton will have to pry my scrunchies from my cold, dead hands or at least wrestle me to the ground!

I use a product called 'invisibobble', I also have long thick curly hair, they are like a plastic rubbery spiral, they hold your hair firmly back in a ponytail but not to tight so there are no headaches, but the best part for me, you ever notice when you take your hair out of a ponytail you can be left with a bump where your scrunchie was, well invisibobbles don't leave a bump. I need my hair tied back for work so they are perfect for me. im not sure if they sell them in the US but heres a link from amazon uk.

They sell scrunchies in the US in almost any store that sells hair products.

seabiscuit, there were so many different decorations at the fair. I didn't even know there was a website until I looked them up for this thread. I may have to buy some more!

I was completely thinking functionality when reading this thread, but I completely forgot about the satin and pearl scrunchies that were used for dressy events...wow, the memories :lol3:

Hair sticks. I wear my hair in a stick or fork pretty much everyday.

My favorite fork in a messy bun
