I don't know how to drive

I am 26 years old and I do not have a license. I am beyond terrified of driving. I want to get my license, I want to learn how to drive but I just can't get the courage. I seriously feel like crying sometimes when I think about it. I am just terrified and I don't know how to get over this fear.

I know what you are going through. I was 37 years old when I started driving, and I only started then because my Son refused to learn to drive unless I got my license too. We learned together. :)
You can do it. I was terrified, and many times I DID cry, but I learned how and I'm sure you can too.

When I was learning how to drive and scared, I looked at all the cars on the road and figured if that many other people could learn how, I could too.

I was in no hurry to drive when I was younger. I actually didn't get a license until I was 19, and that's late in my family. To me, it was the very idea of being responsible for someone else's safety in the car with me that always kept me from reaching for those keys.

Now though, I'm ok with driving and try to avoid the highways simply because while I can handle it, I just prefer going a different route. :)

You're not alone. I have a friend who is 34 years of age, and has no intention of ever getting her driver's license. She's been fortunate to live in a area where the subways are right there for her. But it's not always a feasible idea when you move beyond the cities.

I got mine right away when I turned 16 years old....no need for fear just be aware of what's going on around you. It is the other guy you have to worry about when driving (usually) so just constantly look around and be ready! You can do it. Be confident tho nervousness make the worst drivers!

I was also afraid of getting my license at first, but once I did and got used to driving around, I probably trust my driving more now than anyone else's. And people have told me that I'm a bad driver. Once you get going, you'll get used to it -- honest!!

It is not as scary as it seems. I was terrified to get it and terrified to drive. However, now I do not mind it at all. I still refuse to drive in certain areas like down town cores, but I will drive everywhere else. I still refuse to drive with a full car though. I will if I have to, but I will try to find EVERY OTHER WAY POSSIBLE to avoid driving with people in the car.

I know how it feels to be afraid of driving. I'm 29 and learning to drive. Having a decent car to drive really helps. So make sure you are going to have a car that's easy to drive if you are going to learn.:)

My best advice is to go to a professional driving school. Good luck!

Only Believe 06-10-2013 08:46 AM

I agree with Mozzy. When I was younger my dad tried to teach me, that didn't work. Then later my hubby tried to teach me, and that didn't work.
My husband knew a man that was a driving instructor and they worked it out where he gave me a few driving lessons. Finally, I was able to learn.

I was terrified of driving too, however, you should see if you can find someone who will teach you at your pace (and be willing to push). Instead of driving on a busy road, or a road at all, find a large, empty car park to zoom around in (or an empty road). That's where I first learned to drive under my Dad's instruction.

I wonder if sitting in the driver's seat and imagining yourself driving would be helpful? In any case, the best cure is to face your fear head on and to never give up, especially if it is important to you. As my sig says, don't not do something because it will take time, time passes anyway :)
